Lesson title: Relative clauses

Materials: Coursebook Going for Gold plus FCE , handouts from teacher’s book

Activity 1: Warm up

Aim: -to introduce the students into the atmosphere of the lesson

-to attract students’ attention on the topic

- to elicit needed vocabulary for the topic

Interaction: teacher-students

Time: 5 minutes

Procedure: Teacher announces the title of the lesson, elicits from them which the relative
pronouns are and when we use them and also reminds them the type of relative clauses by
writing two sentences on the board one defining and other non-defining and the difference
between the two.

Activity 2

Aim: -to review forms and function of defining and non-defining relative clauses

Interaction: teacher-students, students-students-pairwork

Time: 10 minutes
Procedure: Teacher asks students to do exercise 1.1 in the coursebook and then discuss the
questions in 1.2 .

Activity 3

Aim: -to identify mistakes in some fixed sentences and correct them

Interaction: teacher-students, students-students - pairwork

Time: 10 minutes

Procedure: Teacher asks students to do next exercise in pairs. One student should close the
book and their partner should read the sentences out loud. The first student should identify the
mistake. Then they have to take turns. Teacher checks at random how they work and guides
them if there is need.

Activity 4

Aim: - to unjumble a story and join sentences together to make a logical paragraph including
four relative clauses

- To be able to relate what they remember about the history the parachute

Interaction: teacher-students, students-teacher

Time: 10 minutes

Procedure: Teacher explains that they have to number the sentences in the correct order and to
join them by the use of relative pronouns and then retell what they can remember from the
story with the books closed.

Activity 5

Aim: - to match text extracts with a suitable heading

- to write in the missing relative pronouns

Interaction: teacher students, groupwork

Procedure: Teacher divides the class into groups of four and gives each group a set of part 1.
Explains that these are headings for magazine articles. In their group they should spend a few
minutes to get an idea what the stories might be about. After a few minutes, teacher gives each
group a set of part 2 cards and they have to match the extracts with a suitable heading, five
headings are extra. Teacher tells them to beware of distracters. The second thing they have to
do is that they have to fill in with the missing relative pronouns. The first group to successfully
complete the task is the winner.

Evaluation and homework: Teacher assesses their work and sets homework.
