Happy New Year 2019 to all our Readers and Well-wishers!
Dear Friends,
2019 is finally here. Last year has come and gone so quickly, yet as we reflect there were so many valuable lessons learnt in 2018. The most
important one that I have learnt is “How to be humble in our success and how to stay strong through our struggles”. I am looking forward to
another year with passion to progress, wishing our subscriber’s a very successful, happy and healthy New Year. Each New Year brings with
it several opportuni es. We at Metro Rail News look forward to 2019 and are of the opinion that this year promises a great pla orm to
showcase the talent that we have within our team. This is yet another year with a whole set of new challenges and provides
new opportuni es to work hard, keep perseverance and transcend.
Everybody was born with a dream, an inner yearning of something they came here to do, to create. I encourage all of you to listen to your
heart, follow your intui on and believe in your dreams. They really do come true!
I started this magazine 4 years ago, and what a journey it has been. I must tell you, being an entrepreneur is exci ng, whilst it comes with its
own challenges. The uncertainty that it brings can be overwhelming at mes, but the possibili es of what could be are far greater and far
more thrilling! I have learned to embrace the unknown, to overcome my fears of failure, and to push forward with determina on and
perseverance. The one thing that has kept me going, and I believe always will, is faith. Faith in myself that I can accomplish anything that I
put my mind to, faith in the almighty, that he is always on my side and working with me to make my dreams come true, and finally faith in
others. I believe in the goodness of humanity and I am of the opinion that together, we can achieve anything.
Our January edi on has in it very interes ng sec ons for the readers which cover topics such as The Year Review 2018 of Metro & Railway,
Cover Story of Train 18, in addi on to upcoming tenders, events, and ar cles on latest technologies, women empowerment, new
development, business opportuni es, industry watch sec on just to name a few.
Finally, let us welcome 2019 with open arms and I hope you can fulfil all your wishes. Remember to keep giving your best at all mes and
that GOD is always on your side.
Happy New Year once again!!
Thank you.

YEAR REVIEW 2018

For Indian Railways, 2018 was a year of Milestones

E
ven as we have stepped into the new year, it is worth noting that 2018 was an eventful year the Indian Railways Honorable
Railway Minister, Shri Piyush Goyal mentioned that if the Indian Railways were to attempt a tagline for its achievements in
the year 2018, it would probably be “2018, a year of many firsts”. This indeed presents an accurate picture of what the
Railways achieved in 2018. Indian Railways was able to achieve some of the biggest milestones till date and the national carrier is
undoubtedly moving in the right direction with a newfound vigor. Following are some of the major breakthroughs that the Indian
Railways was able to achieve in 2018:

Ø Train-18: India’s first indigenously built engine less train:

Train 18 (T-18), the semi-highspeed train, is India’s first
indigenously built engine less (multiple unit with Loco) train.
It is touted as a successor to the likes of Shatabdi Express.
Train 18 is aimed to not only reduce travel time, but also give
a new level of comfort to the Indian passengers, who have
consistently demanded better quality services from Indian
Railways. Following are some of its impressive features:
l Self-propelled train (without a Loco)
l Normal speed of 130 km. / hr., which can rise to a
potential speed of 180+, even 200 km. / hr. with
improved infrastructure and signalling
l AC Chair Car type coaches
l 360-degree rotating seats
l Diffused lighting, automatic doors, and footsteps
l GPS based Passenger Information System etc.
Ø After various mock runs, Train 18 had a successful trial on the standard rail tracks. It breached the speed barrier of 180 kmph
without any hassles, making it India’s fastest train ever.

Ø First Railway University

Ø Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Vijay Rupani along with the
Minister of Railways of India, Shri Piyush
Goyal, dedicated the first Railway University – National Rail
and Transportation Institute (NRTI) to the nation. The
inauguration ceremony took place at National Academy of
Indian Railway (NAIR) campus in Vadodara this month. The
university which is the first of its kind will cater to the needs of
modernization and innovation as far as the Indian Railways is
concerned. On this wonderful occasion, Shri Piyush Goyal
urged students to come forward and make a difference. He
also said that the aim of the university is to develop a world
class infrastructure to encourage cutting edge research in the
railways. This, indeed, is a major step in the right direction
and the university can be considered as a stepping stone
towards the development of an efficient research
infrastructure, catering towards the modernization needs of
the Railways.

YEAR REVIEW 2018
Ø Diesel locomotive converted into an electric one:
Ø In another firsts, the Indian Railways converted a diesel locomotive into an
electric one. The process was carried out in a short time span of merely 69 days
which shows the efficiency with which the Railways achieved this phenomenal
feat. This was also seen as a major shot in the arm as far as the efforts to completely
electrify the broad gauge network are concerned. It is also important to mention
here that a cabinet meet led by the prime minister approved the plan of 100 percent
electrification of Indian railways earlier this year. The electrification is expected to
be completed by 2022. Shri Piyush Goyal said, “We have electrified about 46% of
the routes. The work is on for electrification of about 20,000 km of routes, after which about 78% of Indian Railways will be
electrified. Today [Wednesday], the Cabinet has approved 13,675 km of remaining routes at the cost of 12,134 crore.” This is
going to set new benchmarks in efficiency in the functioning of the Railways.
Ø Setting new standards in safety:
Ø This has to be the most important of a number of feats that the Railways have
achieved in 2018. The number of rail accidents have reduced by a significant
margin. While in 2017-2018, there were 73 accidents, and the Railways for the first
time managed to bring down the number of accidents in a year into two-digit
figures, since April there were 45 such cases until December 15, 2018. During April-December in 2017, there were 54 such
cases. Thus, going by these figures we can expect the Railways to maintain the momentum it has achieved and better its
record as far as reducing the number of rail accidents is concerned.
Ø Bogibeel Bridge inaugurated:
Ø PM Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bogibeel Bridge which is the second rail
cum Road Bridge in Brahmaputra after Saraighat Bridge, which has reduced the
distance between Delhi and Dibrugarh by 155 km. It happens to be the longest
bridge in the country. This will make movement on the Brahmaputra River very
easy. It is a major achievement as far as rail infrastructure in the North-east region
of the country is concerned and will help in further negating a sense of isolation
which used to prevail in the region due to its location.
2018 undoubtedly turned out to be a very successful year of the Railways. Under the
leadership of Minister of Railways Shri Piyush Goyal, the national carrier is progressing
to an unprecedented phase while setting new milestones and creating impressive
records.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

Noida Metro

The Noida Metro project is being developed at an es mated cost of Rs55.03bn ($765m)

N
oida Metro is a mass rapid transportation system being
developed by Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC)
to link Noida and Greater Noida cities in Uttar Pradesh,
India.
Located 20km away from Delhi, Noida is served by Noida-
Greater Noida Expressway and highways connecting Delhi and
its surrounding towns. The industrial city is home to a
population of more than one million. Increasing dependence on
public and private transportation has led to the proposal to
develop a mass rapid transport system.
The Government of Uttar Pradesh approved the construction
of Noida Metro and selected Delhi Metro Rail Corporation
(DMRC) as the turnkey consultant for the project in October
2014.
Construction on the metro rail project began in mid-2015 and
was completed by the end of 2017, while trial runs commenced
in July 2018.
The 29.7km-long Noida-Greater Noida metro corridor, also
known as Aqua Line, is scheduled to be open for commercial
services by the end of 25 January 2019.

Noida Metro route and stations

The Aqua Line corridor will originate at Noida Sector 71 in
Noida and terminate at Delta Depot station in Greater Noida.
It is an elevated alignment with 21 stations, including elevated
and at-grade stations, of which 15 stations are located in Noida
and the remaining six in Greater Noida. The Aqua Line is
connected to the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro by a skywalk.
Knowledge Park-1 station and Delta-1 station in Greater Noida
have provisions for future expansion. Platforms at all the
stations will feature screen doors, which will open in
synchronization with the train doors.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH
Each station is connected to residential areas, industrial
locations and other locations by pathways, pedestal ways, and
bridges. Parking facilities are available at each station.
More than 100 lifts and 81 escalators have been installed at
stations across the network for quick access and easy
mobilization of the passengers.

Infrastructure
An eco-friendly, zero-discharge depot constructed on 25ha of
land features roof-top solar panels and water recycling
facilities. It offers facilities for the accommodation and
maintenance of the train sets.
“The second phase of the Aqua Line will see the extension of the
Noida Metro from Sector 71 to Knowledge Park 5 in Greater
Noida.”
Two receiving substations were commissioned to support the
power requirements of the rolling stock and stations.
Additionally, 21 auxiliary substations were commissioned in all
the 21 stations along the metro line. The trains will be powered
by 25kV AC overhead catenary system.
Noida Metro is equipped with communications-based train
control (CBTC) signalling system supplied by Hitachi.
