1. What do you call the tube that is shared by the digestive and the respiratory systems?
PHARYNX
What prevents food from entering the respiratory system? EPIGLOTTIS

2. Early digestion begins in the MOUTH. At the bottom, the ESOPHAGUS

Moves the food into the _STOMACH__.

3. The glands of the digestive system are _LIVER, PANCREAS AND SALIVARY GLANDS

The _SALIVARY GLANDS are located _BEHIND THE JAW_

and their function is to MOISTEN FOOD AS AN AID IN SWALLOWING AND DIGESTING.

4. The largest organ in the cat’s body is the _LIVER. It produces BILE that aids

in digesting FATS. That product is stored in the GALL BLADDER and

travels through the BILE DUCT to the SMALL INTESTINE after a

meal. Other functions of this organ include FILTRATION blood, destroy TOXIN WITHIN THE BLOOD

and store _SUGAR in the form of GLYCOGEN.

5. The other gland of the digestive system is the PANCREAS_. It produces digestive

juices called ENZYMES and contains small glands called ISLETS OF LANGERHANS

that produce __INSULIN__. This product is necessary in utilizing BLOOD SUGAR_. Lack of this product
causes _DIABETES__.

6. The first section of the small intestine is the DUODENUM. DIGESTIVE ENZYMES secreted by the
small intestine together with BILE_ and PANCREATIC JUICES digest the food so it can be
_ABSORBED_ into the

body. That which is left over moves to the large intestine where _WASTE PRODUCT_

is removed and the remaining waste product is moved through the last section of the large

intestine called the _RECTUM_and out of the body.

7. Blood is filtered through the SPLEEN_where a liquid waste product called

RED BLOOD CELL is produced. That product passes through the _LARGE INTESTINE_,
is stored in the __RECTUM_and passes through the _ANUS

to the outside of the body.

1. What is the technical term for spaying? OVARIOHYSTERECTOMY

At what age can this be done? 6 TO 7 MONTHS

2. Neutering a male cat is done by removing the REMOVAL OF THE TESTICLES IN THE MALE CATS. In
addition to

not producing kittens, a neutered male is less likely to LIVE IN AN OLD AGE, less likely to

STAY HOME less likely to FIGHT and may live longer.

3. Sperm fertilize the eggs in the OVIDUCT. The fertilized eggs implant and develop

in the HORNS_of the UTERUS.

4. The three hormones involved in reproduction are ESTROGEN,

PROGESTERONE and TESTOSTERONE.

The male hormone, TESTOSTERONE, is essential to a male cat’s

SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT_. One female hormone, ESTROGEN,

is responsible for the “IN HEAT” or ESTRUS cycle. The other,

HORMONE, THE PROGESTERONE_, is needed to maintain PREGNANCY.

5. What is the difference between estrous and estrus? Estrous is RECURRENT PATTERN OF SEXUAL
RECEPTIVITY FOLLOWED BY PERIODS OF TIME WITHOUT SEXUAL RECEPTIVITY IN FEMALE .
Estrus is_THE TIME OF SEXUAL RECEPTIVITY OR BREADING/ BEHAVIOR OF THE FREMALE CATS.

6. A follicle is A SMALL FLUID SAC that produces EGG and ESTROGEN. The follicle RUPTURES to
release the EGG into the OVIDUCT. This process is called OVULATION.
