Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad Practice Paper I Primary 3
Thank you for your interest on Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad. In 2017,
we have thousands of participants to join the heat round. This is a fantastic result for all of us
to be interested in TIMO for the first year. For those contestants who get Bronze prize or
above are qualified to enter TIMO Final.
To motivate students’ learning and to help them to develop own learning strategy for the
future, every candidate will have his / her own evaluation report that their results in various
topics in mathematics such as Logical Thinking, Arithmetic / Algebra, Number Theory and
Combinatorics will be shown. The report will also state statistics such as the mean, median,
upper quartile & lower quartile in that contest, so that every candidate knows how they
performed in TIMO at that Grade.
All best,
Andy Lam
Director, Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad

1. There are 27 transparent boxes, as shown in figure 1. Each layer contains 9 boxes as figure 2 shows.
Some black marbles are inserted into the boxes and view from different directions, the images are shown
in the diagram below. Find the maximum number of black marbles inserted in these 27 boxes.
Question 1
Answer: 7
We breakdown the 27 boxes into 3 layers with 9 boxes in each layer. From the top view, we know
than 4 columns have no marbles. From the front view and right view, we can further find out the
rows without marbles, finally the boxes should have marbles are shown in the figure below.
There are at most 7 marbles in the boxes.
2. According to the pattern shown below, counting from the left how many circles are there from the 1st to
the 100th one?
○ ○ △ □ ○ ○ ○ △ □ ○ ○ ○ △ □ ○ ○…
Answer: 60
The figures follow a pattern of repeating groups ○ ○ □ △ ○…. The first 100 figures contain 20
groups where there are 3 circles in each group. So the answer is 3 20 60 .
Write down the answer in the simplest form. If the calculation result is a fraction, please write down the answer as a proper or mixed fraction,
decimal figure is also accepted. Marks will NOT be given for incorrect unit.

3. What is the value of the number to represent “?” in the following table?
2 4 10
3 6 20
4 8 34
5 10 ?
Answer: 52
The value in the right column equals to the sum of 2 and the product of two numbers in the left.
4. Now Peter uses 4 straight lines to cut a rectangle into parts. How many parts can at most he get?
Answer: 11
The method to cut a rectangle as many parts as possible is shown in the figure below.
5. According to the pattern shown below, how many triangles are there in the fourth group?
Answer: 16
The number of triangles follows a pattern: 1 1 1 , 2 2 4 , 3 3 9 , the next one should be
4 4 16 .
Write down the answer in the simplest form. If the calculation result is a fraction, please write down the answer as a proper or mixed fraction,
