TITLE: AQUA-BUILD: A STRATEGIC WAY OF TRANSFORMING WATER

HYACINTH THROUGH ADAPTIVE AND REGENERATIVE ARCHITECTURE

REASONS/ JUSTIFICATIONS IN CHOOSING THE TOPIC:

People may be aware of the existence of the water hyacinth also referred to as water lily, it is
an aquatic “invasive” plant usually found in polluted freshwater streams, rivers and ponds. It
may look like a simple plant floating in the surface of the water but this floating plant is also
called as invasive because it can rapidly grow and reproduce. This plant also breaks the eco
system and biodiversity cycle as it slows down the flow of the river and eventually end up in
becoming stagnant. It also causes environmental problems that affect the environment as a
whole and it is also became a threat into the human’s health which causes allergy when having
a direct contact with the plant and believed to be harmful for the people who lived where this
plant is present. it could also clogged the spillways on dams and causes flood in the area where
it grows.

Despite of all this unsettling problems created by the water hyacinth, by experimenting and
research it is proven to be a possible alternative enhancer of concrete. In the construction
industry it can be a big break in creating an organic substance that could help in producing
concrete. It makes a concrete less absorbent in water, high resistant to temperature and also
make it even stronger in terms of compression.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GROWTH OF KNOWLEDGE IN
ARCHITECTURE:

Its purpose is to create a new idea of how to enhance the quality of the concrete material for
construction and to see the potential of water hyacinth in construction industry. I believe that
this study create a huge impact in architecture when it comes to sustainable living and come up
with a solution using natural materials such as earth construction. It has been proven to be
successful for the past few years after undergoing some experiments and research.
It could also be used to create a low cost housing materials.

Why is the Philippines prone to typhoons? It is because the Philippines is geographically

located along the Pacific region near the Equator which is prone to tropical cyclones and
