I. This question paper contains 05 questions in two pages. Each question consist of two subparts
with equal marks.
II. All the questions are compulsory.
III. Draw neat diagram wherever necessary.
IV. Be brief and to the point.
V. Assume suitable data wherever missing and necessary.
VI. Use of Scientific calculator is allowed

1. 2.5  2 = 5
(a) Two tanks are connected together in the following unusual wayin Figure 1.

Figure 1: Interconnecting coupled tank system

Develop a model for this system that can be used to find h1, h2, w2 and w3 as functions of time for any given variations
in inputs. (Assumption: the density of the incoming liquor is constant; the cross sectional area of the two tanks are A1
and A2; the two valves are linear with resistance R2 and R3; w2 is positive for flow from Tank 1 to Tank 2)

(b) The thickness of a paper sheet from a rolling mill in paper industries is manipulated by controlling the roll gap 𝑑(𝑡)
and measuring the sheet thickness 𝑚(𝑡) at a certain distance from the rolls as shown in fig. The thickness of the sheet
at the roll out point is equal to the roll gap 𝑑(𝑡) as shown and remains invariant during transit.

Figure 2: Rolling mill of paper machine

Given the distance at which the thickness is m`easured is 0.5 𝑚 from the roll gap and the velocity of the sheet 0.2
m/sec, Determine the transfer function system, 𝐺(𝑠) = 𝑀(𝑠)/𝐷(𝑠).
2. 2.5 2=5
(a) Consider the following chemical mixing problem as shown in Figure 3. Two process streams are mixed to produce
one of the feeds for chemical reactor. After mixing, the blended stream is fed to a heating vessel before being sent to
the reactor.

Figure 3: Chemical mixing process flow diagram.

1
The process is running along at steady state. The concentration of A in stream 1 is 1 g/L and in stream 2 is 4 g/L. At
3:00 P.M. the shift changes at the plant. Mr. Raman, the new operator on plant unit misreads the flowmeters for the
process and switches the flow rates of the two streams. Stream 1 is switched to 20 L/min, and stream 2 is switched to
10 L/min. At 3:30 P.M. the shift supervisor, Ms. Nikita hurries to the control room to determine the source of the
problem now being experiencing with the reactor. Use your knowledge of Process control engineering to determine
what has happened to the exit concentration from the heating vessel over the first half-hour of the shift.

(b) Consider the mixed tank heater shown in Figure 4. Develop a transfer function relating the tank outlet temperature to
changes in the inlet temperature. Determine the response of the outlet temperature of the tank to a step change in the
inlet temperature from 60 to 70 °C.

Figure 4: Mixed tank heater.

(a) Outflow (q0 ) from a tank is equal to 2h . Inflow is ‘m’. Steady-state level in tank is 4m, and area of the tank is
2
2m . Find the [ H (s) / M (s)] and characterizing parameters of the transfer function.

(b) Develop the mathematical model for the tubular heat exchanger illustrated in Figure 5.

Figure 5: Tubular Heat Exchanger

4. 2.5 2=5
(a) The diagram shown in Figure 6 represents the pH adjustment; part of waste water treatment process. With using
suitable P&I diagram symbols, draw control loop where the process need is: The process shall maintained at pH 6.
When the process liquid states below pH 6, CV-102 will be opened to dosing NaOH to the tank TK-100. When the
process liquid states above pH 6, CV-101 will be operated to dosing HCl.

Figure 6: pH adjustment the part of waste water treatment process.

(b) The following process illustrate the production of ethane from ethanol: Ethanol is feed to continuous reactor with
presence of Acid Sulphuric catalyzer to produce ethylene. Distillation process then will be applied to separate ethylene-
H2O mixture. Ethylene as a top product is then condensate with condenser to perform liquid ethylene. Hydrogenation
of ethylene applies in another reactor with presence of Nickel catalyzer to produce ethane as a final product. Develop
Process Flow Diagram for these processes.
5. Differentiate the following with suitable examples if required
(a) Lumped and distributed parameter model
(b) Servo and Regulator Problems
(c) Reset Control and Reset Windup
(d) First order and second order pade
