Benchmarking to Industry - Sire Evaluation
At Roseville Park, The Coddington family have always
benchmarked their genetics to the merino industry. Ever
since George Coddington won one of the earliest known
wether trials at Cootamundra three years in succession in
the late 1940’s Roseville Park sheep have always shown
their proven genetic predictability and ability to lift grower’s
bottom line.
Having won the most prestigious awards and gained the
top prices and averages at the major events around the
country we have proven that our sheep have stood up to and
succeeded against some very tough oponents.
We have entered sires into central test sire evaluation
since it’s inception and have found it a very useful tool for
comparing our sires with hundreds of Australia’s top sires.
Sire evaluation is an independent evaluation of merino
sires and offers a high level of assurance in the integrity
of data collected and the corresponding estimation of sire
performance.

Benchmarking to Industry Sheep Genetics
Roseville Parks evolving role in benchmarking has
gone to a new level. Over the past three years
the implementation of Sheep Genetics has been
undertaken. Australian Sheep Breeding Value data from
all of our sires and progeny are measured.
Sheep Genetics is the worlds largest sheep genetic
information source with performance records on more
then 1.2 million merinos including over 7000 sires.
Roseville Park has two sires in the top 13 sheep in the
country on Merinoselects’ elites list.
Breeding values are designed to be used by ram breeders
and commercial producers to compare the genetic potential of
rams and ewes for across flocks, and are independent of the
environment and location.
Sheep genetics is underpinned by a best practice quality
assurance system for data entry, accuracy and genetic linkage
before breeding values are published. Roseville Park is using a
7% DP (Dual Purpose) index which is designed to maintain micron
and increase fleece weight, body weight and reproduction.

The Five Generations of Roseville Park
1880 - that was the year that Mr Charles Coddington, a man
with ideas and a vision of building the finest sheep stud in
Australia, came to Australia from England.
He selected a block of good grazing land at Murrumburrah, which
is on the Currawong Creek in the southwest slopes of NSW. He
set about breeding his Merino sheep which were of Canonbah
blood. Soon he was showing his sheep at local shows at Young
and Murrumburrah and these sheep were Grand Champions.
His son W.J Coddington followed in his father’s footsteps
and in 1903, he purchased his own property, “Granite View”
at Murrumburrah. WJ Coddington bred Merino sheep, having
purchased a Snowy Ram from Sir Walter Merriman. These
Merinos were shown at local shows in Young, Murrumburrah
and Condobolin also with great success.
One of WJ Coddington’s sons, George, purchased a property
at Kingsvale called “Roseville” in 1928. Having purchased
Wanganella Estate rams, George established his flock of
Merinos. In 1938, George purchased his first stud ewes and
registered Roseville Merino Stud. The Stud went on to become
one of the most successful studs in the state. It won one of
the earliest known wether trials at Cootamundra three years
in succession in the late 1940’s. It beat other southern studs
including the Merryville Stud from which George had bought 5
rams between the years 1942-50.

In 1952, George Coddington and his family moved to Narromine
and contined his stud success by winning the Bathurst Gold
Cup for Grand Champion ram, twice.
In an endeavour to increase size and wool cut in his new
environment, George purchased eight Haddon Rig rams
between the years 1958 - 1975.
In 1969 another Merryville ram was purchased to continue the
Merryville, Haddon Rig cross. This ram ML2 was a descendant
of Snowy Monarch and had a significant impact on the stud.
In 1974, George’s sons Robert and Graham purchased the stud
and they began trading as Roseville Merino Stud. In 1979 on
the dispersal of the Manderley Stud at Cooma, which was based
on Wonga and Koonwarra “Uniforms”, Graham and Robert
purchased 160 special stud ewes and the top 120 special stud
ram lambs for the Roseville Stud. Only two Manderley families
were introduced into the Roseville Fock; these were the now
famous Purple family and the little John family.
The Purple Family was formed at Manderley Stud in 1969 by the
selection of 100 double stud medium wool ewes from the Wonga
Family who were then crossed with 2 Koonwarra Merino Stud
Rams from their Uniform Family. Two rams were selected from
the resulting progeny and they became the nucleus of the Purple
family. These rams were joined with sisters and half sisters and
their progeny retained the great size and wool growing capacity of
the Wongas, plus the white waterproof wool of the Uniforms.
The Five Generations of Roseville Park
In 1983, Graham and Sally sold the
property at Narromine and moved to
the current property of “Glenwood”,
35km south of Dubbo. The stud
partnership between Robert and
Graham was dissolved in 1987 and
Robert re-named his half of the stud
East Roseville and Graham registered
the Roseville Park Merino Stud.
On the first of July 2005, Graham and
Sally’s son Matthew, at the age of 32
with his wife Cherie, purchased the
Roseville Park Merino Stud, and the
properties Glenwood and Currawarra.
Matthew, is now keen as the fifth
generation owner of the stud, to carry
on the fine family tradition of breeding
top Merino sheep.
Graham and Sally have retained
8000 acres based around their
current home of “Eulandool” near
Dubbo and at “Limestone”, Parkes
and will run the Roseville Park Dohne
Stud which was founded in 1999,
and a commercial flock.

This ram is third generation ET bred on both sides—
bred to be predictable with faultless phenotypic
design. He was a standout amongst his siblings. He
has a long shafty staple that oozes from his skin. He
has a beautiful outlook with a pure muzzle, good turn
of horn, heavy bone and a long deep body.
RP04-2536 was judged the Supreme Exhibit at the
Rabobank Dubbo National Ram Show and Sale 2006.
Sons already weigh upto 100kg at 13 months and are
exhibiting their fathers tremendous outlook.

Comments- RP05-1864 is a freak for his abilty to grow
such a fine pure wool on a massive, correct frame. He
has been entered into two CSIRO Bare breech area
(BBA) trials and the Sheep Genomics information
nucleus for research into gene markers and gene
mapping for growth and BBA.
With the call to end mulsing by 2010 there are only a
handful of studs trying to genetically breed a long term
solution to a mules free sheep.
This ram will be a foundation sire to start a new family
at Roseville Park to supply rams to fill a market driven
demand of some of our clients seeking BBA sires.
RP05-1864’s woolcut figures of +25 put him in the top
2% of the breed for clean fleece weight.

RP4-2365 was a standout lamb in the drop, showing
plenty of growth and capacity. He has a tremendous
barrel and cannon bone. He stands very correct on all
four feet.
His wool is a free flowing 64’s type that is pearly white.
2365 has a good clean poll socket that is dry and free
from suint. He has been used in the poll flock through AI
and ET. Some outstanding sons are available this year.

Judged first at his first outing at Bendigo in the milk
tooth Poll ram class and placed second in the All
Purpose class.
His dam is an interesting cross of Nerstane 43 and
