EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

This report discuss about the actual working done in (Marcom & Brands) This report
highlights the experience of 6 weeks spend in PTCL Headquarters in Marcom & Brands
Department, which includes key lesson learnt, key departmental working, meetings attended,
departments visits during internship, key sessions attended, latest updates of department,
latest updates of PTCL, list of tasks performed during the internship and some
recommendations that how we can more improve the PTCL.

INTRODCUTION:

PTCL is a largest telecommunication provider in Pakistan. PTCL also continues to be the


largest CDMA operator in the country with 0.8 million V-fone customers. The company
maintains a leading position in Pakistan as infrastructure provider to other telecom operators
and corporate customers of the country. It has the potential to be an instrumental agent in
Pakistan’s economic growth. PTCL has laid an optical Fiber Access Network in the major
metropolitan centers of Pakistan and local loop services have started to be modernized and
upgraded from copper to an optical network. On the long distance and international
infrastructure side, the capacity of two SEA-ME-WE submarine cable is being expanded to
meet the increasing demand of international traffic.

With the promulgation of Telecommunication (Re-Organization) Act 1996, the Pakistan


Telecommunication Authority was established as the Telecom Regulatory body. Following
the open licensing policy in BUY @ PKR 45.40accordance with the instructions of
Government of Pakistan and in exercise of powers conferred by Pakistan Telecommunication
(Re-Organization) Act 1996, the basic telephony was put under exclusivity and PTCL was
given a seven years monopoly over basic telephony which ended by December 31,2002. The
years 2006-7 in the telecom sector witnessed a phenomenal So far PTCL is the sole land line
service provides of Pakistan. PTCL is the giant of growth in the mobile phone sector in
Pakistan which doubled its subscriber base to 60 million. The Tele density increased from
26% to 40helping to spread to benefits of communication technology across the country.
PTCL’s mobile phone subsidiary Ufone’ subscriber base grew by more than 87% from 7.49
million to 14 million.

The year also witnessed the entry of major telecom companies, most notable China Telecom
and Singtel, into the market. Restructuring and re-engineering are in their final stages along
with the implementation of ERP system. From the end customer’s

Perspective, a major initiative was put in place in the shape of Broadband Pakistan service
launch as a first step towards providing its customer with more values added services and
convenience. With this offering. The PTCL not only bringing the benefit of high speed
internet access to subscribers in major cities but will also generate new revenue streams for
future growth. The company also continued to invest in Infrastructure development and
addition of network capacity with a view to enhance services and to expand its reach across
the country.

TASKS PERFORMED IN DEAPRTMENT:

 Verification of Invoices:

PTCL being a large public company had it spend huge, for advertisement through
different mediums. PTCL is covering almost all the mediums of the advertisement. PTCL
is also give sponsorships to the events. PTCL is using an ads agency for this purpose. So,
we received those invoices from the agency and verify those through our records.

 PTCL Website:

PTCL is going to launch a new website for its customers’ ease. New website is totally
different from the old one. PTCL conducted a research on it and came to find that there
would be a new website for the customer. This website is according to interest of the
customers of the PTCL and their ease. I was asked to write content for some tabs on the
website. I also checked the FAQs of the website and made correction of the grammatical
mistakes. I also verified the other data of the new website.

 Branding:

Branding brought the huge attention of the customer. Therefore, PTCL is working seriously
on it. I did tasks related to it. I was asked to make and prepare a power point presentation

about the branding. The main purpose of it was to know about branding. I also discussed the
Branding process in it.

 Corporate Section:

I also did work in business/corporate section of the new website. I was asked to gather data
from the relevant managers of different departments according to the sections of new website.
I was asked to find the verbal and grammatical mistakes in the data of the business section on
the website.

 Event Management:

I was part of the organizing team, we organized the Mango Party “Daawat-e-Aam” for the
commercial department. I worked hard to organize the party. It was a successful party, and
everybody enjoyed the environment. All the employees related to the commercial department
were invited there. I used different art work for this event. Everybody loved the decoration
and enjoyed the party.

 Correction of Contents:

I was asked to do correction of the content of the old website for the new website. I interacted
with manager of Corporate and HR department for the correction of the contents of their
related section on the website. Some of the contents are totally changed, some changes are
minor, but some remained the same.

 SAP:

I learnt the production module on SAP. I used the following commands regarding payments
in SAP.

Apart of PO creation and PR creation was also learnt

Lessons learnt:

During this brief time at PTCL, I not only gained experience in the relative field of work, but
my supervisor (GM, Marcom & Brands) guided/mentored me in personal development not
only as an employee, but also as a human being. I would like to thank him for presenting me
with different professional situations every day, so I could come up with the confidence and
the expertise to tackle every task thrown towards me.

I had a wonderful experience at PTCL, mainly due to my supervisor, who was very involved
with our work and treated us as employees rather than interns. If more people can maintain
this kind of attitude with others, then I think this program can excel across the country. Other
than that, I think a proper project-based internship can also attract many interns at PTCL.
PTCL took several steps to commence the journey to bring a culture charge in the
organization. This entails putting greater focus on customer service and emphasizing merit,
integrity and openness in the Company’s business practices and process. So, there is a hope
that numerical performance positive results in near future.

Promotion
During my placement in the Sales and the promotional department I observed different
strategies and policies that are made for the whole Hazara region for the increase of sales and
the promotion. I was also asked to give any suggestion and idea about the promotion of
PTCL.

Promotional activities that are done by PTCL are as follows:

 Personal selling
 Promoting Outdoor (bill boards etc.)

During my time at PTCL I was given a task that I have to make any advertisement, flyer or
any brochures for the promotion of PTCL.

Electronic media
Now a day’s electronic media is the main place where the promotions are placed. PTCL also
uses the electronic media to attract its customers and promote their product.

The Following electronic media is used by PTCL:

 TV commercials
 Mobile advertisement
 PTCL official website

Personal selling (Direct marketing)


During my 4th week of internship I was given a task in the super sale to visit different people
and organizations and encourage them to be the customers of PTCL and if they are already
using then give them the upgraded offers. I along with the team of PTCL visit different places
and interact with them.

PTCL promotes their products and services through outdoor advertisements. For this purpose,
they use bill boards, Daewoo busses different pan flexes at different places and also
promotional boards at different places.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT analysis of PTCL is as follow

Strength
 As PTCL is founded in the year 1947 so it is the oldest telecom service provider in
Pakistan.

 All the other cellular networks are by any way dependent on PTCL.

 PTCL is the only land line service in Pakistan so it has no competition in landline.

 They are holding the data of the customers in a way as no other company have.

 They are offering their packages at low rates.

 They are also providing cheap packages for the students as Student Package and the
speed of student package is also good at low rate.

 PTCL is the largest network in Pakistan

 PTCL is also offering low rates for the national calls

 PTCL has a subsidiary Ufone that is giving tough time to all the other cellular
networks in Pakistan.

 PTCL is also having a support of Government.

Weakness
Weaknesses of PTCL are as follows:

 The Organizational structure of PTCL is flat.

 Due to the involvement of the government and the influence of politics PTCL has
slow decision making.

 Customer service of PTCL is very pathetic.

 Wireless coverage is poor as compare to other networks.

 The installment of new connection is slow.

 Not very good marketing techniques.

 The productivity is slow, and employees are over hired.

 The culture of PTCL is same as government, monopolistic.

 In large cities the process of new connections is very slow.

 The growth of PTCL is not as much increase as the level of organization it is.

 Due to these problems the Pak net bares losses.

 The problem is that the employees are not hires on the basis of merit.

 Lack of educated and trained staff.

 Technical support of broadband is also having a problem due to untrained staff.

Opportunities
 They can bring improvement in the broadband services

 The technical and experienced staff is hired so that the DSL issues solved, and the
customer will satisfy.

 Proper plan and management can also improve the service of EVO and other wireless
devices.

 They can acquire the latest technology to attract the customers.

 They can do something to establish their brand loyalty

 They can give high ended products and also the best services to attract their
customers.

 A good competitive and marketing strategy must be applied.

Threats
 Other cellular networks are giving tough competition to PTCL.

 Government is increasing taxes day by day.

 The political instability in the country.

 There are many international and national competitors are coming in market.

 Day by day technology is changing.

 There are also fraud issues and also the security issues.

 Customers are shifting towards cellular networks that are not a good sign for PTCL.

 Increasing rate in Cyber crime

 Load Shedding in the Electric sector.

 There is no consistency in the decisions of PTCL management.

 They are not following new culture.

KEY OBSERVED RECOMMENDATIONS:

 Need to improve website as it contains a lot of information that is overloaded.


 Need to make some packages simple. Some packages contain much information that lead
to confusion for customer.
 Improve the quality of services they are providing to the customer.
 Make product features look simpler for the customers.
 Better training of customer care employs.
 Better coordination between various departments.
