Work and Energy

What is work?
• It is the product of the force and the displacement of the object in the direction of the force, W= Fd
• It is a scalar quantity-means no direction.
• Unit- Joule (J) –by James Prescott Joule
• 1 Joule (J) = 1 newton-meter (N.m)

Three conditions that are necessary in performing WORK:

1. A force must act on the object.
2. The object must move.
3. The object must move to the direction of the force (or the force must have a component in the
direction of the displacement of the object.
Energy
The energy of a moving object is called energy of motion or kinetic energy (KE).
• The KE of an object depends on its mass and velocity.
Formula:
• KE= ½ mv²
• Where: KE=Kinetic Energy, m=mass, v=velocity

Sample Problem 1:
A 1000 kg car has a velocity of 17 m/s. What is the car’s kinetic energy?

Gravitational potential energy or Potential Energy (PE)

-Work is done in lifting an object. When work is done on an object, energy is transferred to it. Thus, an object lifted from
the ground gains energy. Since the work is done against the force of gravity, it is called gravitational potential energy or
simply potential energy (PE).
Formula for Potential Energy:
• PE = mgh
• Where:
PE= Potential Energy or Gravitational Energy
m= mass of the object
g= the acceleration due to gravity equal to (9.8 m/s²)

Sample problem 2:
If the same 1.0 kg book is lifted 0.5 m above the table, but the table top is 1.0 m above the floor, what would be the
potential energy of the book if the reference level were the floor?

Exercise:
Is there any work or not?
1. A girl is pulling her toy car.
2. 2. A man is lifting a box to be placed on a table.
3. A girl carrying a bag walks down the street.
4. A mango fruit falling from the branch.
5. A 500 kg car has a velocity of 10 m/s. What is the car’s kinetic energy?
