Dear Parents

I hope you are having a restful and enjoyable summer and are looking forward to the upcoming Eid holiday.
I wish you and your family all the best for Eid al-Adha when it comes.

I wrote to you last month to tell you about some of the changes we are bringing in for September and have
also written to you about our priorities for the school over the coming months and years. As we approach the
start of a new school year I wanted to tell you about the work we have carried out over the summer and also
remind you of our priorities for 2019-20.

Over the summer we have improved the learning environment and facilities by:

 Installing a high specification sound and lighting system and rebuilding the stage and performance
area in the Multiplus. This will enable us to give your children the opportunity to perform in high
quality productions.
 Installing new air conditioning units in classrooms so that all units are reliable and will provide a
comfortable learning environment for your children.
 Replacing the flooring throughout the Primary and Girls’ School corridors to ensure that students have
a safe and fresh learning environment.
 Refitting and re-tiling all washrooms in the ‘old building’ (Primary and Girls’ Schools) and renovating
other washrooms in the school where necessary.
 Upgrading our ICT infrastructure so that it is suitable for 21st Century learning.
 Re-painting all classrooms and most corridors. In the primary school classrooms will now be House
colours as part of our plans to strengthen the House system and in the Secondary School they will be
department colours to enhance specialist learning areas.
 Re-fitting classrooms so that secondary students now have subject specialist classrooms for all
subjects
 Installing access control systems on all external doors to enhance student safety
 Installing advanced water filters for water coolers
 The addition of new external lighting
 Replacing the carpet and wall tiling in prayer rooms

All of these changes are intended to ensure that our students have the best possible learning environment
that will support them making exceptional progress in their learning.

Over the next year we will be continuing our work on the five priority areas I have previously outlined and in
particular will focus on:

 Further changes to our curriculum to ensure that it is broad and balanced with opportunities for all
learners, whatever their strengths and career aspirations.
 Further improving teaching, learning and assessment by embedding our new assessment, behaviour
and homework policies and introducing new quality assurance procedures.
 Improving student behaviour with a strong focus on behaviour and rewards systems.
 Embedding our new staff structure so that students’ well-being, as well as their academic progress, is
appropriately supported.
 Further enhancing our arrival, dispersal and security systems to ensure that students remain safe at
all times.
 More streamlined communication systems to ensure that the partnership between home and school
is as strong as it can be.
 Leadership development for staff to ensure the best possible leadership in the school
 Training for all staff to ensure they are up to date with current teaching techniques and have an
enhanced understanding of the UK National Curriculum.
 Further enhancement of the school buildings and learning environment so that it is fit for 21st Century
learning.

In addition to the points above we will be continuing our work on our Values and Respect Programme and the
GEMS Jewels of Kindness initiative. This was well received last year and we will be further enhancing it this
year. This GEMS wide initiative is intended to ensure that children develop positive values and show respect
for each other and, in particular towards adults and their family. Developing Values and Respect is very
important to me and has always been a key focus in my previous schools. At TWS it is no different.

I am very excited about the new school year and know that our school will continue to go from strength to
strength. I have set ambitious targets for examination results and our DSIB inspection and am sure that our
staff, working in partnership with you and your children, can exceed these targets.

I very much look forward to working with you again next year and continuing to work towards our goal of
making The Westminster School, Dubai one of the best schools in the world.

Yours sincerely

Carl Roberts
