 One day in a classroom, there are two girls who is sitting while talking about something.
Jesica : “Hey, Salsa. Do you have other activities except going to this campus?”
Salsabila : “Not really. I think I have a lot of leisure time now.”
Jesica : “Same here. Oh, yesterday when I walked to the campus I bumped into some
college student who sold some donuts. The donuts were delicious, though.”
Salsabila : “So, what are you trying to say?”
Jesica : “I’ve got an idea from that event. How about if we start a new business in this
campus, too?”
Salsabila : “Oh, I think that it’s not a bad idea, but what kind of business would do?”
Jesica : “How about internet cards? There are so many colleagues who use phones now.”
Salsabila : “Hmmm… To start this kind of business we will need much capital, right?”
Jesica : “Ah, right. Seems that we need to find people who want to lend us money.”

On the next day in the same campus, after having English class, Salsabila and Jesica
asked their friends to lend them some money.
Salsabila : “Hey, girls! We have a business plan. We plan to sell some internet cards, but
we lack of capital. So could you guys lend us some money?”
Jesica : “We promise to pay you back in one month.”
Istifa’iyatus : “Oh, sorry girls, but I’m not really interested in this kind of thing, and now I
have something important to do. Bye!”
Salsabila : “How about you, girls?”
Anggie : “I think it’s a good idea. Ok, I’ll lend you my money.”
Ananda : “I don’t really object it, but could you tell us your prospect of this business
first?”
Jesica : “We just realized that most of college students nowadays use smartphones. Of
course, most of them will need internet cards.”
Salsabila : “And the best part is that you need to refill the quotas of the internet once you
used all of them.”
Anggie : “Hahaha… I agree with you.”
Ananda : “Is that so? Ok, I’ll lend you my money, but how much you need?”
Jesica : “Hmmm.. Let me calculate it first. (Calculating with her calculator). It’s about
Rp800.000,00.”
Salsabila : “Each of us has Rp.300.000,00.. So could each of you lend us Rp.100.000,00?
We will give each of you Rp.50.000,00 of interest later.”
Anggie : “Alright then, don’t forget to repay us back!”
Jesica : “Thanks Gie, Nan. You’re the best!”

Then Salsabila and Jesica lend their money to them.

Salsabila : “Now we just need to find people who iare willing to sell our goods.”
Jesica : “Ha, for what? We can sell them by ourselves, right? We have so much leisure
time afterall.”
Salsabila : “Of course no! We are the owners, why should we sell the goods by ourselves?”
Ananda : “Wow, so you girls would hire other people to sell your goods?”
Anggie : “Doesn’t it means that you need to give them some commission?”
Salsabila : “Actually by doing this business, I want to help people who need money too at
the same time, aside to gain some profit.”
Ananda : “Wow, what a kind girl you are! I’m amazed.”
Jesica : (sigh) “Ok, I understand your intention. So first we need to find the sellers,
right?”
Salsabila : “Yeah, let’s go!”
After that they begin to search for the people who fit their requirements. Later they
overheard three girls who are talking at that time.
Nadira : (sigh) “Now, we need to pay more money for our study tour.”
Siska : “May be we need to explain to our lecturer about our conditions.”
Monica : (Nodded) “I agree. Our families’ economic conditions do not support us after
all.”
Nadira : “The worst part is that recently my father has lost his job, so he is trying to find a
new one now. Our family need to save up as much money as possible.”
Siska : “I’m not from the rich family, too. To pay my tuition fee is a burden already to
my family.”
Monica : “Same here. I also get a scholarship to cover up the tuition fee. I’m working at
night, but I think that Rp.50.000,00 is just too much.”
Jesica : “Hello! Sorry, but we overheard your conversation and we are willing to offer
you a solution. We offer you a job to help you girls earned some money so you
girls can still go for your study tour.”
Nadira : “Is that so? Thank you! You are our saviours! So, what kind of job we need to
do?”
Salsabila : “We would like if you, girls could help us selling our internet cards. We will
give you commision as the reward.”
Siska : “Wow! Ok, we agree! When will we start?”
Jesica : “All of you can start tomorrow. So, be cheer up, girls!”

The day after that day they start selling their internet cards.
Monica : “Hi! Could I have some of your time? Do you interested to buy my internet
cards?”
Suci : “Sorry, but I still have enough internet quotas.”
Monica : “C’mon, buy it, please.. It’s cheaper now.”
Suci : “Sorry.. May be I would buy it next time. Is that okay?”
Monica : “Oh, it’s alright. Thanks for your time!”

Meanwhile in another place, there are Nadira and Siska who are trying to sell their goods
to their friends.
Nadira : “Hey, guys! We are selling internet cards now. Would you want to buy?”
Dian : “What a coincidence! I have used all of my quotas already. Do you guys sell
Simpato card?”
Istifa’iyatus : “Me too. Please give us the three gB one.”
Shofi : “Don’t forget me, I want to buy too!”
Dian : “We are your friends, right? Could you give us some discount, please?”
Siska : “Hmmm… Alright, but don’t forget to help us promoting our products to your
other friends, OK?”
Istifa’iyatus : “Alright. Then how much it cost for one card?”
Nadira : “Actually it cost Rp.65.000, but for you it’s 60.000.”
Shofi : “Hey, do you guys agree?”
Istifa’iyatus & Dian : “Yes!”
Siska : “Alright. So the total would be Rp180.000,00.

Finally, they success in selling two internet cards. In the end of the month, they have
sold all of the goods and gave all of the money to the owners. After that, the owners give each of
them Rp60.000,00. Then, the owners are talking about the rest of the money.
Salsabila : “Ok, now we have Rp.1.200.000,00. The dividends will be Rp.80.000,00 to each
of us and the rest will be the capital for the next period. We will contact them
again after this.”
Jesica : “Oh, don’t forget to pay our debt,Rp.250.000,00 to Jesica and Nanda.”
Salsabila : “Right. This is yours. Let’s just pay them tomorrow!”
Jesica : “OK!”

From this short movie, we can conclude that we need capital to start, operate, and
expand a business. The process of acquiring this capital is known as equity financing and debt
financing. In equity financing, the business sells units of ownership known as shares of stock,
while in the debt financing the business borrows money from an investor in return for a bond.
The business must make periodic interest payment to the bondholders during the time the money
is borrowed. If the business is success, the investor will gain dividends, which are proportional
amounts of profit usually paid quarterly to investors. However, if the business is not successful,
the investors may take a serve loss on the initial stock investment.

Questions:
1. What is equity financing?
Answer : The process of acquiring capital by selling units of ownership known as shares of
stock.
2. What is debt financing?
Answer : The process of acquiring capital by borrowing money from an investor in return for
a bond.
3. What is dividend?
Answer : Proportional amounts of profit usually paid quarterly to investors.
