Colombia Nariño

Starbucks Colombia Nariño coffee comes from a region in southeast Colombia on the border with
Ecuador known as Nariño. Nariño’s unique characteristics create an exceptional coffee growing climate.
The mountain area gets more than 70 inches of rain per year and plenty of sunshine. The region’s
volcanic soil has a high percentage of organic material. For us, the heart of Colombian coffee sits in the
mountains of Nariño. Coffee grows at elevations higher than 2000 meter, where warm tropical days and
cool nights let the beans develop slowly. Because of this the beans are really dense which makes the
Colombia Nariño a perfectly complex but approachable coffee.

The package:

On the package of our Colombia Nariño coffee you can find a Yukuna mask.
The Yukana is a group of Indians speaking normally within their family the Yukuna, an Arawakan
language. These natives are distinguished into five descent groups. The first group considers itself as the
“True Yukuna" in Yukuna, whose ancestors are at the origin of the contemporary Yukuna language.
During September and October many dances and chants take place to celebrate the abundance of food
and fish of the season, and from November to December households meet for two days and nights to
dance the peach-palm ritual, in which dozens of masked men in bark-cloth costumes ritually sing and
theatrically represent the animals with whom they share the fruit. Masks, and the decoration of objects
encode icons of cultural identity. Many of the new iconic elements of the material culture are seen in
dreams before they are manufactured.

Bean density:

Bean density is important for our quality. The denser the bean the more complex and layered the flavor
will be. Like mentioned previously the Colombia Nariño coffee trees grow on high altitudes - warm
temperatures during the day and cool nights allow the bean to develop slowly which gives the bean
more time to develop the complex flavor. Dens beans are also really important for the roasting process;
we are able to roast our beans exceptionally dark because of the high quality beans we source.

Community:

We have been serving some of Colombia’s finest coffees since opening our doors in 1971. Since then, we
have grown to become the world’s largest purchaser of premium Arabica Colombian coffee. Today, 99%
of the coffee we buy from Colombia is verified through the ethical sourcing program.

When we launched our groundbreaking C.A.F.E. (Coffee and Farmer Equity) Practices verification
program in 2004, Colombia was among the first countries where these standards were implemented. As
the program grew, Starbucks opened a Farmer Support Center in 2013 in Manizales, Colombia to
provide more on-the-ground training and agronomy support to Colombian coffee farmers

Colombia ended the more than 50 years of violence in 2016 when its main rebel group, the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), inked a peace agreement. Many people have lived in
areas of conflict where more than 200,000 have died and 5 million have been displaced. For some, the
main way to earn a livelihood was to grow coca leaves, used in making cocaine. If the farmers wanted to
stop, sometimes their lives would be in danger.

Since the agreement was reached, farmers now have more freedom to make the choice to turn from
coca leaves to coffee growing. We are committed to helping them become successful.
