TRADITIONAL DANCES IN LUZON, VISAYAS, AND MINDANAO

Traditional dancing can be another term for folk dance, or sometimes even for ceremonial dance. The
term ‘Traditional’ is more frequently used when the emphasis is on the cultural roots of the dance. A
Traditional dance will therefore have arisen from a people’s cultural traditions, for example, the folk
dances of indigenous populations of Europe. However, dances that have a ritual origin or purpose are
not usually considered to be Traditional dances. These are known as ‘Religious dances’ instead.

TRADITIONAL DANCE IN LUZON

1.SAYAW SA BANGKO

▪Is a native dance to the barrio of Lingayen, Pangasinan

▪Is a famous Pilipino folk dance in which the dancers must use good skill and balance as they dance on
top of a narrow bench. This dance dates back to before the Spanish colonization of the Philippines,
which means it is a purely Pilipino Ancestral dance.

▪It requires skills in jumping, leaping and balance due to its concept of dancing through series of
movement's that includes acrobatics.

2.MAGLALATIK

▪Originated from biñan laguna

▪It is a mock war dance that portrays the war over coconut meat or the highly priced latik during the
spanish colonial time.

▪The dancers are all men, wearing a coconut shell by other half of coconut shell in the rhythm with the
music.

▪ It is performed in religious occasions during the fiest in Biñan as an acknowledgement to San Osidro de
Labrador who is known as Patron Saint of farmers.

3.BANGA

▪Also known as "pot dance"

▪The Banga or pot dance is a contemporary performance of Kalinga of the Mountain Province in the
Philippines.

▪This dance illustrate the languid grace of a tribe otherwise known as fierce warriors.

▪Heavy earthen pots, as many as seven or eight at a time, are balanced on the heads of maidens as they
trudge to the beat of the "gangsa" or wind chimes displaying their stamina and strength as they go about
their daily task of fetching water and balancing the banga.
4.IDUDU

▪A tribal dance in Abra, Cordillera of Itneg (tinggian people).

▪It is described to be a family oriented dance that displays the importance of family in the society.

▪The concept of idudu dance caring for the children by both a mother and father.

5.IDAW

▪Is a Bontoc dance that represents a war ceremony. Idaw is a kind of bird that the tribal group wants to
capture because it is believe to be a lucky charm during a war and having that kind of bird can lead them
to victory against their opponents.

▪ Idaw dance steps are imitation of the warriors during the war. The first part of the Idaw dance steps
show how the warriors look for the Idaw bird to be their lucky charm during the war then the dancers
will dance portraying the warriors during a war.

▪ The dance is composed of male dancers and they are wearing a traditional clothing of the people from
Cordillera which is commonly known as “bahag” and the dancers are holding spears and shields.

6.RAGSAKSAKAN

▪Ragsaksakan means “merriment” (gaity and fun)

▪This dance is performed during 2 special occasions, a successful hunting venture and peace between 2
tribes.

▪They use baskets full of harvested rice or banga and beautiful blankets which are called “blankets of life

TRADITIONAL DANCE IN VISAYAS

1.TINIKLING

▪Originated from leyte during spanish colonial time/ Hailed as the national folk dance

▪It is performed by two dancers, either male or female with another two people beating, tapping, sliding
the bamboo poles on the ground while dancers step over or in between poles.

▪Presented with a pair of dancers hopping between two bamboo poles held just above the ground and
struck together in time to the music. The rhythm of the music eventually gets faster as the dance
progresses with the dancers hopping faster as well. It was said that the inspiration of the dance are the
“Tikling” birds, hence, where the dance was named after.

2.KURADANG
▪Also known as Curatcha

▪A lively festival dance performed during fiestas, wedding, baptismal parties and other occasions that call
for a celebration.

▪The Kuradang could have been derived from the archaic Waray word kurandang or kudangdang which
literally means "overdressed". The term is probably descriptive to showy dancers of the olden days.

▪The basic Kuradang step is even a part of the Tinikling dance.

3.ITIK - ITIK

▪Itik-Itik dance is popular among the Visayan settlers of the province of Surigao del Norte.

▪It has many variations of steps from which the dancers choose and combine.

▪Its steps are similar to the movements of a duck (itik, in Filipino), as it walks with short, choppy steps
and splashes water on its back while attracting its mate.

▪ The dancers mimic the short swaying gait of wadding feet and the intense energy of closed-cropped
flapping wings.

4.GAPNOD

▪Cebuano for "flotsam"

▪A worship dance popular among the people of Negros Oriental.

▪ It is a reenactment of the discovery by a fisherman of the image of St. Anthony of Padua, the patron
saint of the town of Sibulan, Negros Oriental.

▪The dance is one of rejoicing and merrymaking that ends in a fluvial procession along the coast.

TRADITIONAL DANCE IN MINDANAO

1. ASIK

▪A dance from the Maguindanao Tribe of Mindanao. There is much debate about the popular belief that
the Asik is a dance performed by a slave girl to win the favor of her sultan master.

▪However, some insist that Asik is a royal dance that started with a princess dancing it to appease her
sultan father.

▪This dance are slow ,emphasize graceful and shows passion and willingness.

2. SINGKIL

▪Singkíl (or Sayaw sa Kasingkil) is a folk dance of the Maranao people of Lake Lanao based on the epic
legend Darangen, which was popularised by the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company.
▪ It is a re-telling of an episode from the Maranao epic legend Darangen involving the rescue of Princess
Gandingan (abducted by the diwatas) by the legendary Prince Bantugan.

▪It is a popular dance performed during celebrations and other festive entertainment. Originally only
women, particularly royalty, danced the Singkil, which serves as either a conscious or unconscious
advertisement to potential suitors.

▪The dance takes its name from the heavy rings worn on the ankles of the Muslim princess.A kulintang
and agung ensemble always accompanies the dance.

3.KINI - KINI

▪Kini means the Royal Walk.

▪Maranao women performed this dance with scarves. The beauty of the scarves and the talent and grace
in which it is displayed. Shows their elite social upbringing.

▪Movements and shapes of their walk are very articulate and their scarves represent their fluidity and
grace. Their grace is a characteristic of their good education.

4.PANGALAY

▪Pangalay (also known as Daling-Daling or Mengalai in Sabah is the traditional "fingernail" dance of the
Tausūg people of the Sulu Archipelago and Sabah.

▪The dance also means offering from its Indianized Sanskrit origin pang-alay.Mangalay, which also means
dance, is very similar to classical Balinese and Thai dances.

▪The dance is the most distinctively Asian of all the southern Philippine dances because dancers must
have dexterity and flexibility of the shoulders, elbows, and wrists – movements that strongly resemble
those of "kontaw silat

▪The Pangalay is predominantly performed during weddings or other festive events.The male equivalent
of the Pangalay is the Pangasik and features more martial movements, while a pangalay that features
both a male and female dancer is called Pangiluk.

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE


You may wonder what is the difference between all the different styles of dance.Well before
Contemporary dance and Modern dance there was Ballet but later on there were ballerinas that wanted
a style of dance that broke away from the rigid structure of ballet. That is where Modern dance and
Contemporary came along.
MODERN DANCE

The modern dance styles does not have set rules. Modern dancers often create their own dance routines
using their emotions and moods, but on the other hand, many performances are
choreographed.Modern dancers prefer a more relaxed and free style of dancing. While ballerinas try to
be light on their feet, modern dancers use body weight to increase movement.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres
including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and
the body through fluid dance movements.Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation,
unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to
pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be
performed to many different styles of music.

BALLROOM DANCE

Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the
world. Because of its performance and entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on
stage, film, and television.Ballroom dance may refer, at its widest definition, to almost any type of
partner dancing as recreation. However, with the emergence of dancesport in modern times, the term
has become narrower in scope and traditionally refers to the five International Standard and five
International Latin style dances .

TWO TYPES OF BALLROOM DANCES


1. STANDARD BALLROOM -

These are the following dances that moves around the entire dance floor in a counter clockwise fashion.

2. LATIN BALLROOM -

These dance stays in one spot on the dance floor and energetic that reflect the syncopated rhythm of
the music being dance.

STANDARD BALLROOM DANCE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

WALTZ

▪The romantic Waltz is one of the most popular ballroom dances of all time. Considered by some as the
"mother of present day dances" and the "backbone dance" of the ballroom dancing arena, the Waltz is
the basis for many dances. A truly romantic dance, the Waltz is comprised of soft, round, flowing
movements.
▪The Waltz is a smooth dance that travels around the line of dance. Characterized by its "rise and fall"
action, the Waltz includes a step, slide, and step in 3/4 time.

▪Dancers should move their shoulders smoothly, parallel with the floor instead of up and down, and they
must strive to lengthen each step

▪The tempo is slow

▪Basic rhythm 123 123 ( strong accent in 1)

TANGO

▪Tango canyengue uses body dissociation for the leading, walking with firm ground contact, and a
permanent combination of on- and off-beat rhythm. Its main characteristics are its musicality and
playfulness. Its rhythm is described as "incisive, exciting, provocative".

▪One of the most captivating of all ballroom dance

▪Latin word "tangre" (to touch)

▪A dance that has influences from spanish and african culture

▪Basic rhythm - Quick- Quick - Slow

VIENNESE WALTZ

▪The Viennese waltz is a rotary dance where the dancers are constantly turning either toward the
leader's right (natural) or toward the leader's left (reverse), interspersed with non-rotating change steps
to switch between the direction of rotation.

▪The music can be instrumental or vocal, classic, celtic , country or even "Top 40" hit

▪The most well known of all composers of veinnese waltz music was Johann Strauss

▪Basic rhythm 123 123 ( strong accent in 1)

FOXTROT

▪The foxtrot is a smooth, progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across
the dance floor. It is danced to big band (usually vocal) music.

▪Developed in the 1910s, the foxtrot reached its height of popularity in the 1930s and remains practiced
today.

▪It was moderately fast, simple and unrefined

▪Is extremely versatile and can be dance to a variety of musical styles and tempo

▪Its name from its inventor, Vaudeville Actos Harry Fox


▪ Basic rhythm - Slow - Quick - Quick

QUICK STEP

▪The quickstep is a light-hearted dance of the standard ballroom dances.

▪The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat
melodies that quickstep is danced to make it suitable for both formal and informal events.

▪Quickstep was developed in the 1920s in New York City and was first danced by Caribbean and African
dancers.

▪ Its origins are in combination of slow foxtrot combined with the Charleston, a dance which was one of
the precursors to what today is called swing dancing.

▪It is characterised by fast movement's , often including a variety of hops,kicks,skips, lock steps and
chasses.

▪Basic rhythm - Slow - Quick - Quick

LATIN BALLROOM DANCE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING :

CHA CHA

▪It is danced to the music of the same name introduced by Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrin
in the early 1950s. This rhythm was developed from the danzón-mambo.

▪The name of the dance is an onomatopoeia derived from the shuffling sound of the dancers' feet when
they dance the three consecutive quick steps that characterize the dance.

▪It is a lively flirtatious ballroom dance full of fashionand energy

▪Basic rhythm - 2 3 4 & 1 2 3 4 & 1 (accent on count 1)

SAMBA

▪Originated in brazil in the beggining of the 20th century

▪This dance is popular in young people as well as older generation

▪Samba can be performed solo or with partner

▪Basic rhythm - 1 a2 1 a2 ( accent on downbeat)

RUMBA

▪It is considered to be the most passionate and sensual of all latin ballroom dance.

▪It is also referred as the" Grandfather of latin dances"


▪It is a slow, sensuous , romantic which spotlights the lady and feature much flirtation

▪Basic rhythm - 2 3 4 (1), 2 3 4 (1)

PASO DOBLE

▪Pasodoble is a fast-paced Spanish military march used by infantry troops. Its speed allowed troops to
give 120 steps per minute.

▪It is a live and dramatic style of dance to march like a Pasodoble music

▪It was originated in Southern France , but it was molded after the sound drama and the movement of
the spanish bullfight

▪Paso doble means "double step" in Spanish

▪ The character of dance is arrogant and passionate

▪Basic rhythm - March (one step per beat)

JIVE

▪Is a dance style that originated in the United States from African-Americans in the early 1930s.

▪It was popularized in 1934 by Cab Calloway. It is a lively and uninhibited variation of the Jitterbug, a
form of Swing dance.

▪ Glenn Miller introduced his own jive dance in 1938 with the song "Doin' the Jive" which never caught

▪Basic rhythm - 1 2, 1 a2, 1 a2
