The idea of having a taro plantation is good, good in all aspect.

Everyone could benefit, because

nobody became successful without the help of others. In order to achieve the taro plantation, we need
man power, the farmers. It could help not only our self-interest, but everyone. We can’t build a wide farm
without asking help. Help that everyone would have unity and one goal. It could help our country in the
future in many ways.

Taro cultivation has two types; the flooded or wetland and dryland or upland. Sometimes, others
are planting in the pot but the best to plant this is in the ground. Flooded or wetland type is an area where
the water is abundant, naturally produced by nature such as rivers and streams. The water needs to
circulate because when water is stagnant it may cause a damage in our root plant. Flooded is good when
planting taro is out of season and it can also help to suppress the weeds. It requires taro a longer time to
grow for about 12-15 months. While in the dryland type of cultivation is the practice of growing crops in
the absence of irrigation. It demands a great deal of effort to ensure that the soil is not run-down of
moisture. Especially, taro roots love moisture. In dryland taro can be harvest for only 12months.

The preparation for Taro plantation is quite laborious and needs hard work to established. It has
to check or test the area if it is good for plantation, because there was an area infected by insects that can
cause damage to our plants. When we verify the area that is free from any infectious disease, the field,
flooded or dryland need to ploughed or harrowed before planting the Taro. It is by means of a hoe or
animal traction. Flooded is much easier than dryland when it comes in ploughing. But dryland does save
some water. After the field preparation we can plant the Taro. To produce many taro plant, we can replant
the harvested one. Because as I know what we need is the lower part of the corm. When the upper part
of the corm is cut, we can replant it and produce a new one for several months. It also happens when we
dig up the taro there is a lot of small corm, can also be planted. In the dryland kind of cultivation, we need
to water regularly the taro to ensure that the moisture will stay. And to make our taro grow healthy, we
need to observe the damaged leaves and cut it. Some farmers, used fertilizer to make taro would grow
fast and much healthier.

Some countries like in Hawaii, taro is their staple food while in Southern Ethiopia they processed
taro into flour and serve as their food. It also used for medical or medicine purposes. In Philippines, taro
was used by the farmers to feed for animals, like pigs and carabaos. Taro is beneficial that it can help not
just the country itself but also its citizen. If we educate the farmers of how Taro can change their living
condition, they will surely cooperate with our mission. We just have to explain sincerely and deeply, the
needs of taro in Korea and in other countries and the importance of the taro. When it comes in economic
benefit, it was a big help for the economic growth of a country through exportation and it generates
employment. And it also can make a new food product and can be a livelihood program that government
can offer for those marginalized people 3
