The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation–Behavior™ (FIRO-B®) instrument was created in
the late 1950s by William Schutz, PhD. Schutz developed the FIRO-B theory to aid in the understanding
and predicting of how high-performance military teams would work together.

In developing the FIRO-B theory, Schutz began with the premise that "people need people." He used the
term interpersonal to indicate any interaction, real or imagined, occurring between people. He used the
term need to describe a psychological condition that, if not satisfied, leads to a state of discomfort or
anxiety.

In addition to his own observations of group behavior, Schutz was influenced by the psychological
literature, including the works of Freud, Adorno, Fromm, Adler, and Jung, among others. He posited that
interpersonal needs could be grouped into three categories: Inclusion, Control, and Affection. The FIRO-
B model describes the interaction of these three categories of interpersonal need along two dimensions:
expressed and wanted.

It is now one of the most widely used instruments in the world to help individuals understand their
interaction approaches, used primarily to look at group dynamics and leadership in organizations.

The extent to which people attempt to satisfy three basic social needs:

 Inclusion: participation, recognition, belonging

 Control: power, authority, influence
 Affection: openness, warmth, closeness

And, how much one initiates behavior (Expressed) and How much one would like others to initiate that
behavior toward her/him (Wanted).

Interpretation
My FIRO – B Matrix :

Inclusion Control Affection

Expressed Total e = 14
behavior towards 7 6 1
others
Wanted behavior Total w = 10
6 1 3
from others
Total inclusion = 13 Total control = 7 Total affection = 4 Social Interaction
Index = 24
Scores pattern is understood as:

 LOW Score (0-2): tending to show this behavior in very few situation
 MEDIUM Score (3-6): this score says people tend to show these behaviors in selected situation
 HIGH Score (7-9): this score says people displays these behaviors very often

Normally every individual score on social Interaction Index falls in the range of 16 – 31.

Inclusion:

 Expressed: Less than 2 means cold fish, my score in this is 7, that means I try to include others in
my activities. I try to belong and join social groups and be with others as much as possible.
 Wanted: My score is again Medium in this which means, I want other people to include me in
their activities and invite me to belong. I enjoy it when others notice me.

Control:

 Expressed: In this my score is moderate i.e. 6 which states, I find myself comfortable enough in
directing people.
 Wanted: My score in this grid is lowest i.e. 1 which says I don’t like to be given instruction on how
to do it. I want to work in autonomy with things done by my own without any instruction.

Affection

 Expressed: my score is 1, which means I make less efforts to get close to people. I am jittery in
expressing personal feelings.
 Wanted: My score in this is 3, Neither I express to get close to someone nor I want someone from
the other side to get close, I may choose in certain circumstances to be comfortable and letting
others get close to you and support you.

My score in Social Interaction Index is 24 which is quite high as compared to the score in general which
is between the range of 16-31.

The difference of total of Expressed Behavior towards others and Wanted Behavior towards others
must be less than 3 and difference more than 3 or 4 brings dissonance and my difference is 3 which is
good.
