Project: Construction Bidding, award, contracting practices, estimating,
planning and scheduling and equipment selection
Class Project

Part 1:
In this part of the project, you need to act on the behalf of different stakeholders
(owners, designers, consultants and contractors) to design the needed
documentation to deliver a bridge project. The preliminary details of the project are
provided with this document.
The documentations needed should at least include:
• Notice to bidders including bonding requirements. The median that you need
to announce it with to different contractors (newspaper, newsletter, web
service… etc. with the cost of the announcement in the selected service).
• Completed bid proposal form (include both lump sum and unit price items).
• Detailed AutoCAD drawings
• General conditions of the contract
• Special conditions of the contract
• Technical specification of all materials needed for the project

Important: Currently, Dubai has mandated the use of green concrete and the trend
is expanding. The bridge project that you need to design the management
documentations for must be constructed with green concrete. This needs to be
reflected in your project by specifying the technical specifications of green
concrete and the cost implications of this sustainable material.

Remarks:
• Sample documents are distributed in class and available online or published
in construction related references. However, the most important aspect is to
study the practice in the UAE and to design your documentations to reflect
local practices.
Part 2:
Prepare PDM (AON), CPM (AOA) and Bar Chart schedule for the bridge project.
The Bar Chart is the early start schedule where each bar extends from the early
start to the early finish of the activity. Evaluate risk associated with the different
tasks and use PERT to find the project duration that has 70%, 80% and 90%
confidence.

Part 3:
Select three construction activities (Concrete Placing, Formwork, Shoring…etc.)
and design crews to work on these construction methods. Estimate the crew
productivity and efficiency factors. Data needs to be collected from the
construction industry in UAE.

4. In order to calculate the work days from the bar chart, assume June 17 is
Thursday. Workdays are Monday through Friday.
