THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

This chapter presents the background of the study, the theoretical

framework, the conceptual framework, the statement of the problem, the

significance of the study, the scope and limitation and the definition of terms.

INTRODUCTION

It was year 2012 when the K-12 education curriculum was first become

effective here in the Philippines. Where another 2 years in high school was being

added, the grade 11 and 12 or the senior high school.

K to 12 (also K-12) is an education system under the Department of

Education that aims to enhance learners’ basic skills, produce more competent

citizens, and prepare graduates for lifelong learning and employment. “K” stands for

Kindergarten and “12” refers to the succeeding 12 years of basic education (6 years

of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school, and 2 years of senior high

school)

The K-12 program offers a decongested 12-year program that gives students

sufficient time to master skills and absorb basic competencies

Students of the new system will graduate at the age of 18 and will be ready

for employment, entrepreneurship, middle level skills development, and higher

education upon graduation. The K-12 program accelerates mutual recognition of

Filipino graduates and professionals in other countries.

the new curriculum gives students the chance to choose among three tracks

(i.e. Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts) and undergo

immersion, which provides relevant exposure and actual experience in their chosen

track.

Work immersion is one of the program in senior high school. The word

“immersion” as it applies to the K-12 curriculum is defined in the Department of

Education (DepEd) order no. 40, series of 2015:

Work immersion refers to the part of the senior high school (SHS) curriculum

consisting of 80 hours of hands on experience or work simulation which the grade

11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and

to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the supervision of the

school head and designated personnel of the partner. (ALEGA et al, 2015).

Work immersions prepare students for the real world by training them how to

work in a company and eventually excel in a specific career. The school needs to

ensure that its students gain various competencies that would have these future

professionals ready for employment. Work Immersion is a key feature of SHS

Curriculum. It can be conducted in different ways depending on the purposes and

needs of learners.

We conducted this study to know the impact of work immersion among

the students in terms of choosing a course in college. As senior high school was

actually call as the training ground of the students for their college life and

eventually for their chosen field in the future. Through work immersion, students will

be guided properly to choose the best path for them.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of work immersion

among the HUMSS students in IMCC BED in choosing a course in college.

Specifically, this present study aims to answer the following question:

1. How does work immersion affect the students to their career decision?

2. How does work immersion improve the skills of the students?

3. Is work immersion effective to the students?

BED. The results of the study is applicable only to the respondents of this study and

should not be used as a measure of the Effectiveness of Work Immersion Among the

HUMSS Students in IMCC -BED IN Choosing a Course in College of the students who

do not belong to the population of this study.

The study will be quantitative in nature, thus, it will employ surveys and

interviews and focused group discussions as its main research instrument in

gathering data. The researchers considered working on this study to find out if

there’s an effectiveness of work immersion of selected respondent of Iligan Medical

Center College Basic Education Department.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

CHOOSING A COURSE IN
COLLEGE
WORK IMMERSION

EFFECTIVENESS OF WORK IMMERSION AMONG THE HUMSS STUDENTS

IN ILIGAN MEDICAL CENTER COLLEGE BASIC EDUCATION IN
CHOOSING A COURSE IN COLLEGE
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

The present study was anchored on Parson’s Trait and Factor

Theory of Occupational Choice. Frank Parsons is regarded as the founder of the

vocational guidance movement. He developed the talent-matching approach.

He states that occupational decision making occurs when people have achieved:

 an accurate understanding of their individual traits (aptitudes, interests,

personal abilities)

 a knowledge of jobs and the labor market

 rational and objective judgement about the relationship between their

individual traits, and the labor market.

Parson’s trait and factor theory operates under the premise that it is possible to

measure both individual talents and the attributes required in particular jobs. It also

assumes that people may be matched to an occupation that's a good fit. Parsons

suggests that when individuals are in jobs best suited to their abilities they perform

best and their productivity is highest. (Audi, 2016 ).

In his book, 'Choosing a Vocation', Parsons maintains that personal counsel is

fundamental to the career search. In particular, he notes seven stages for a career

counselor to work through with clients:

1. Personal data: create a statement of key facts about the person,

remembering to include every fact that has bearing on the vocational

problem.
2. Self-analysis: a self-examination is done in private and under the instruction

of the counselor. Every tendency and interest that might impact on the choice

of a life work should be recorded.

3. The client’s own choice and decision: this may show itself in the first two

stages. The counselor must bear in mind that the choice of vocation should

be made by the client, with the counselor acting as guide.

4. Counselor’s analysis: the counselor tests the client’s decision to see if it is

in line with the “main quest”.

5. Outlook on the vocational field: the counselor should be familiar with

industrial knowledge such as lists and classifications of industries and

vocations, in addition to locations of training and apprenticeships.

6. Induction and advice: a broad-minded attitude coupled with logical and

clear reasoning are critical at this stage.

7. General helpfulness: the counselor helps the client to fit into the chosen

work, and to reflect on the decision.

Much of Parsons’ work still guides career counseling today, though it is not without

criticism. Matching assumes a degree of stability within the labor market. However,

the reality is that the market’s volatility means individuals must be prepared to

change and adapt to their circumstances. (Hamlyn, 2017).

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For the purpose of clarity and understanding, the following terms were

defined operationally and or conceptually:

WORK IMMERSION – Work immersion refers to the part of the senior high school

(SHS) curriculum consisting of 80 hours of hands on experience or work simulation

which the grade 11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual

workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the

supervision of the school head and designated personnel of the partner. (ALEGA et

al, 2015).

CAREER – A field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially

in public, professional, or business life.

COLLEGE – A place of higher education usually for people who have finished twelve

years of schooling and where they can obtain more advance knowledge and get a

degree. A collge is also one of the separate parts into which some universities

devided. (www.dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/college)

COURSE – a program of instruction, as in a college or university: a course in

economics. a prescribed number of instruction periods or classes in a particular field

of study. (www.dictionary.com/browse/course)
K to 12 – K to 12 (also K-12) is an education system under the Department of

Education that aims to enhance learners’ basic skills, produce more competent

citizens, and prepare graduates for lifelong learning and employment. “K” stands for

Kindergarten and “12” refers to the succeeding 12 years of basic education (6 years

of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school, and 2 years of senior high

school). (www.k12philippines.com/)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

This study presents the related literature and related studies. This will pertain

for the outline of the study useful information for the interpretation and analysis of

data to be collected.

Related Literature

Immersions prepare students for the real world by training them how to work

in a company and eventually excel in a specific career. The school needs to ensure

that its students gain various competencies that would have these future

professionals ready for employment. Philippines is one of the third world country

which refers to countries with developing economies as opposed to those with well-

established and developed economies. The economic performance has everything to

do with the label. Things like wages for instance, although the Filipino worker with

minimum wage may earn nearly 8 times more than an average Chinese worker, the

Philippines minimum wage is nearly 8 times less than its counterpart in most

developed countries .That are several factors that determined the level of

development of an economy from the level of education of the population, social

programs and government assistance to its citizens to its level of industrialization

and dependence of agriculture. ( Sanchez, 2016 ).

Related Studies

The K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop the learners the

competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or

joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education

and the nation’s development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject, has

been incorporated into the curriculum. This subject will provide learners with

opportunities: to become familiar with the work place; for employment simulation;

and to apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in

authentic work environments. To achieve the said objectives, Work immersion is

thus a requirement for graduation from secondary education. Learners are immersed

in actual work environments such as workshops offices and laboratories in which

their prior training is relevant. (DepEd Order No. 30 S. 2017) Qualitative Work

Immersion Programs are considered a useful instrument that bridge between school

and professional life which can be used by the school in order to develop appropriate

skills among students aimed at increasing their employability chances on the very

competitive labor market.

According to Wood & Bandura (1989) as cited in Machmud (2018) states that

perception in completing a job is self-efficacy. Moreover, self-efficacy relates to

someone's confidence in achieving his/her duties in uncertainty. While Bandura

(1997) as cited in Domenech-Betoret et al. (2017) defined self-efficacy as “an

individual’s belief in his or her own ability to organize and implement action to

produce the desired achievements and results”. Self-efficacy is one’s faith in

accomplishing task successfully. Learners automatically adjust and adopt the new
environment they are in for them to finish the immersion program while developing

their efficiency. The study was conducted to identify the level of self-efficacy and

work immersion satisfaction and determine the degree of their relationship. (

Hamlyn, 2018 ).

FOREIGN STUDY

Freitas s. (2014) shanti brings experience from working with study abroad

students and volunteers for three years in Ecuador, as well as leading students on

immersion programs in various countries in latin America. At UW-Eau. Claire, Shanti

coordinates three immersion experiences found through Blugold commitment

faculty-Led international immersion Experiences (FLIIE), Domestic Intercultural

Immersion (DII) and the international Fellows Program (IFP). Schmidkonz Dr. C.

(2014) the globalization of the economy has created an urgent need for business

schools to better prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, and perspective they

need in their working lives for a abroad understanding of international business

practices. In orderto fulfill this demand, researchers have been focusing among

others on how curriculum could be structed and by whom students should be

instructed. Instead, how the program should be taught has attracted less attention.

Vaughn C.M (2015) significant health care disparities exist in the united states. In

addition, immersion can also be categorized according to the content as general or

company specific training, Salehi M. (2009) training is essential to the growth and

economic well-being of a nation. This need for training pervades all levels of

industry, for a national level where a country’s well-being in enhance training, to

each company where productivity is improved, down to the individual whose skils

are enhanced and as a result improve their position in the workplace.

Willow Valley Communities (2014) the Willow valley work Immersion Program

(WIP) focuses on helping students make a successful transition from school to

productive adult life. This unique one year immersion program serves students who

are in their last year of high school, with the goal of competitive employment, each

students receives classroom instruction and hands-on experience through internship

in has many as three departments with the Willow Valley Communities. Throught

their work immersion experiences, students also develop employability, social, and

independent living skills.

Work Immersion Program at Willow Valley Communities (2015) the students,

between the ages of 17 and 21, are participating in a unique yearlong work

immersion, finding viable employment upon graduation from high school is easier

because of skills and experiences obtained through participation in work immersion.

Through immersion, students would be getting exposure (of the real world),

confidence ( of facing real situation) and they would be doing networking (making

contacts) for themselves. Immersion would also help them understand what are

their real strengths and weaknesses. ( Heathfield S.M 2016).
