1-Minute Speech

CORE E
March 2018
On Thursday, March 15, you will give a short 1-minute presentation on using technology in communication. Unlike the
previous mini speech, you will not present this speech in front of all the students in CORE. It will only be in class. I’ll
provide you feedback based on the rubric at the bottom of the page.
With your permission, I will record your speech so that I can save it and possibly use it as an example for future classes. If
you are absent on Thursday, you are welcome to record your speech (audio or video) and email it to me
(kcnettgen@gmail.com) so that the rest of the class can watch it. If I have permission to record your speech and use it for
future teaching purposes, please sign the permission slip and return it to me on or before Thursday, March 15.
Here is a list of topics that you can present on. You can also come up with your own topic if you would prefer. You can
also take one of the following topics and adapt it (e.g., change the word technology to smartphones to make it more
specific).

 Why do we rely on technology so much to communicate?

 Is technology the best way to communicate?
 When should children be allowed to have a cell phone?
 How much money should we spend on technology?
 Is social media a reliable form of communication and keeping in touch with friends?
 How has communication changed over the years?
 What do scientists think about cell phone use?
 What do companies like Verizon, Motorola, and Apple think about cell phone use?
 What are some apps you enjoy using? Are they time-consuming?
 How can we monitor our technology use?
 Should parents be allowed to read their children’s text messages and social media posts?
 How well can you know a person based on social media?
 How effective is email as a form of communication?
 Should students be allowed to have their teachers’ phone numbers?
 Does talking on a phone influence the way we treat the person we’re talking to (as opposed to talking in person)?
 Are phone interviews a viable alternative to face-to-face interviews?
