Course Description
This course helps students improve their speaking fluency and their
ability to listen and understand. Students learn new vocabulary,
expressions, and conversation strategies. What students learn in this
class will help them function better in daily situations.
Course Goals

d. Creates groups of sentences that are connected in meaning and purpose.
e. Asks and answers a limited variety of questions.
f. Uses correct basic syntax (grammar).
g. Uses stress correctly in words and sentences.
h. Pauses when appropriate.
i. Uses correct intonation.
4. Effectively implements speaking strategies.
a. Self-corrects when errors in accuracy and meaning occur.
b. Repeats or rephrases when appropriate.

Translation
If you have a question about a word, always ask the teacher first. Then, you may
translate.
Grades
Please check your grades on Canvas every week. If there is a mistake
or you have a question, please email the teacher or talk to the teacher
after class (not before class).
At the ELC, you have 2 different grades: citizenship and proficiency.
Participation Points
Daily participation is worth 3 points. If you are absent for more than 10 minutes of class, you
receive 0 participation points for the day.
If you are sick, please bring your doctor’s note to Mrs. Sandy Hatchett (in the main office, room
103).
Homework
Daily homework is worth 2 points. Homework is due at the beginning of class.
Major Assignments
Listening & Speaking Tests (30% proficiency)
You have 3 tests this semester. At least 1 of these will be an interview with the
teacher. (Why? The tests support all course goals.)
