Course Description and Syllabus 2019-20

Course Description: This course is designed as an alternative for the student not planning to study calculus or
wanting foundational reinforcement before heading into a higher level math course. The major
topics covered are algebra, trigonometry, finite mathematics and statistics. Emphases will be on
reinforcing fundamentals and exposing the students to applications of mathematics in real-life situations.

Textbook: Online resources and handouts will be used in lieu of a textbook

Required Materials: 1) TI-84 Series Graphing Calculator


2) 3-ring binder with lined, loose-leaf paper and 3 dividers (Notes, HW, Graded)
3) pencils, erasers, pens (for checking/making corrections only)
4) charged laptop


Grading: ∙ Quarter grades: Tests: 50% Quizzes: 30% Graded Classwork/Homework: 20%

∙ Semester grades (per handbook): Exams: 25% Each of the two quarters: 37.5%

∙ Exam dates: Semester 1 Exam: Thursday, December 18, 9:00 – 11:00


Semester 2 Exam: Thursday, May 28, 12:30 - 2:30

∙ Grading scale (per handbook): A: 94-100 B: 86-100 C: 78-85 D: 70-77 F: below 70



Homework: 1) Posted daily in the classroom as well as in Google Classroom
2) Must be completed by the beginning of class on the day it is due
3) Must be completed on loose-leaf notebook paper
4) Students are responsible for completing and turning in work missed when absent.
5) HW that is not graded:
● will be checked for completion
● must show work that supports answers to earn full credit
● will count as a test grade at the end of the quarter; students begin each quarter with a
100 but lose 4 points for each missing/incomplete assignment


Extra Help: It’s important to practice self-advocacy! Seek extra help as soon as you realize you need it!
● Take advantage of Tutorial during Discovery period
● Check to see if I’m available to during your study hall
● I can meet with you before or after school if need be

Absences: Communication regarding absences is imperative as you are responsible for completing
the work you miss! Avoid stress by doing whatever you can to keep up!
1) Planned absences and early dismissals
• notify teacher and pick up work ahead of time
• doublecheck class website
• due dates will be same as the rest of the class

2) Unplanned absences
• check class website for work you miss
• you will have the number of days that you missed to complete and hand in missed work
• extenuating circumstances will be handled on a case by case basis.

3) Missed assessments: plan to make up in a timely manner during study hall (in M-4).

Class Rules: 1) Cell phones are prohibited; possession during assessments is grounds for referral to Honor Committee.
2) Laptops are to be used for instructional purposes only.
3) Please respect others and their property.
4) Leave things better than you found them!
