CRUST

- The thinnest & the

outermost layer of
earth.
- 6-7 km thickness
- Temperature
range from O-78 °C
- Rich in igneous
rock such as
granite and basalt.

KINDS OF CRUST
 Continental Crust
- 35-40 km
- made mostly from a
rock called granite.
 Oceanic Crust
- 7- 10 km thick
- made mainly from a
rock called basalt.
MANTLE
- Located directly
below the crust
- 2800-3200 °C
- Makes up the
largest volume of
earth interior 83 ¼ of
the earth volume
-Made up of Mg, Fe,
Al, Si and O.
PARTS OF MANTLE
 Upper Mantle
- 1,400°C – 3,000°C
- Solid/ Liquid
- This layer is up to
670km below the
Earth’s surface.
 Lower Mantle
- 3,000°C
- Solid
- The lower mantle is
found between
670km and 2,890km
below the surface,
and is made from
solid rock.
 CRUST
Inner Core
- 5,000°C – 6,000°C
- Solid
- Solid iron and
nickel
Outer Core
- 4,000°C – 6,000°C
- Liquid
- Molten Iron and
Nickel
- This liquid layer of
iron and nickel is
5,150km deep.
LITHOSPHERE
- Solid outer part of
the earth.
- The brittle upper
portion of the mantle
and the crust.
ASTENOSPHERE
- The soft, weak layer
of the mantle on
which the
lithosphere floats
-made of hot molten
material.
