Kinematics – 1D Class XIth

Name: Marks Obtained:

Time: 1.5 Hour Date: 23.06.2019 Total Marks: 60

1. Derive the three equations of motion by calculus method. Express conditions under
which they can be used.

2. A car moving with a speed of 126 km/h is brought to a stop within a distance of 200m.
Calculate the retardation of the car and the time required to stop it.

3. A boy standing o a stationary lift (open from above) throws a ball upwards with the
maximum initial velocity he can, equal to 49ms-1. How much time does the ball take to
return to his hands? If the lift starts moving up with a uniform speed of 5 ms -1and the
boy again throws the ball up with the maximum speed he can, how long does the ball
take to return to his hands?

4. A body covers half of its journey with a speed of 40 m/s and other half with a speed of
60 m/s. What is the average speed during the whole journey?

5. A car moving at a speed of 10 m/s is accelerated at the rate of 2 m/s2. Find out the
velocity after 6 sec.

6. A train moves from one station to another in two hours time. Its speed during the motion
is shown in the graph. Determine the maximum acceleration during the journey. Also
calculate the distance covered during the time interval from 0.75 h to 1 hour.

7. A drunkard waling in a narrow lane takes 5 steps forward and 3 steps backward,
followed again by 5 steps forward and 3 steps backward, and so on. Each step is 1 m
long and requires 1 s. Plot the x- t graph of his motion. Determine graphically and
otherwise how long the drunkard takes to fall in a pit 13 m away from the start.

8. A jet airplane travelling at the speed of 50 kmh-1 ejects its products of combustion at the
speed of 1500 kmh-1 relative to the jet plane. What is the speed of the latter with
respect to an observer on the ground?

9. On a two lane road, car A is travelling with a speed of 36 kmh-1. Two cars B and C
approach car A in opposite directions with a speed of 54 kmh-1each. At a certain instant,
when distance AB is equal to AC, both being 1 km, B decides to overtake A before C

does. What minimum acceleration of car B is required to avoid an accident?

10. A ball is dropped from a height of 90 m on a floor. At each collision with the floor, the
ball loses one-tenth of its speed. Plot the speed time graph of its motion between t=0 to
12 s.

11. A body is moving with a uniform acceleration. Its velocity after 5 seconds is 25 m/s and
after 8 seconds is 34 m/s. Calculate the distance it will cover in 10th second.

12. A bullet fired into a fixed target loses half of its velocity after penetrating 3 cm. How
much length will it penetrate before coming to rest assuming that it faces constant
resistance to motion?

13. Four persons K, L, M and N start from the vertices of a square of side ‘a’, simultaneously
and move towards the neighbour in order always with the same speed of v. When and
where do they meet?

14. Read each statement below carefully and state with reasons and examples, if it is true
are false:
A particle in one dimensional motion.
(a) with zero speed at a instant may have non-zero acceleration at the instant
(b) with zero speed may have non – zero velocity.
(c) with constant speed must have zero acceleration
(d) with positive value of acceleration must be speeding up
15. A body covers 12 m in 2nd second and 20 m in 4th second. Find what distance to body
will cover in 4 second after 5th second.
