Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is the largest number that is a factor of the given numbers. It is the
highest number that divides the given numbers without a remainder.
Example:
What is the GCF of 4 and 8?
To get the GCF, do continuous division. Divide 4 and 8 by their common factors until the remaining numbers will
not have any common factor.
To get the LCD, take the numbers on the left as well as the last numbers written horizontally then multiply
them.
The least common denominator of and is .
Similar fractions are fractions with equal or the same denominators.
Example: and
Dissimilar fractions are fractions with unequal or different denominators.
Example: and
A fraction in its lowest term is a fraction whose numerator and denominator do not have any common factor.
First, add or subtract the numerators, then copy the denominator of the given fractions.
Reduce your answer to its lowest term.
Step 2: Express the fractions into similar fractions whose denominator is equal to the LCD.
The numerator of 3/4 will be 12÷4 ×3 = 8, then put the LCD as its denominator.
Do the operations.
Step 2: Express the fractions into similar fractions whose denominator is equal to the
LCD.3/8 = 9/24
5/6 = 20/24
¼ = 6/24
Tips
Answers should always be in simplest form. Simplest form is also the same as
lowest term.
If the answer is an improper fraction, change it to mixed number. An improper
fraction is a fraction whose numerator is greater than its denominator.
If the answer is not in lowest terms, reduce it to lowest terms.
Answers not in simplest form are marked as incorrect.
