Numbers and Number Sense - Addition and Subtraction of Fraction

Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is the largest number that is a factor of the given numbers. It is the
highest number that divides the given numbers without a remainder.
Example:
What is the GCF of 4 and 8?
To get the GCF, do continuous division. Divide 4 and 8 by their common factors until the remaining numbers will
not have any common factor.

Get the numbers on the left, and multiply them.

The GCF of 4 and 8 is .
Least common denominator (LCD) is the least common multiple of the denominators of the fractions.
Example:
What is the LCD of and ?
Get the denominators of the fractions, and do continuous division.

To get the LCD, take the numbers on the left as well as the last numbers written horizontally then multiply
them.
The least common denominator of and is .
Similar fractions are fractions with equal or the same denominators.
Example: and
Dissimilar fractions are fractions with unequal or different denominators.
Example: and
A fraction in its lowest term is a fraction whose numerator and denominator do not have any common factor.

Find the sum and difference of the following fractions.

 9/16 and 5/16

 3/4and 2/3

To add or subtract similar fractions:

First, add or subtract the numerators, then copy the denominator of the given fractions.
Reduce your answer to its lowest term.

To add or subtract dissimilar fractions:

Step 1: Find the least common denominator (LCD).

9/16+5/16 = 14/16= 7/8

9/16- 5/16 = 4/16= 2/8

The LCD of 3/4 and 2/3 is 12.

Step 2: Express the fractions into similar fractions whose denominator is equal to the LCD.

The numerator of 3/4 will be 12÷4 ×3 = 8, then put the LCD as its denominator.

and ¾ = 9/12 AND 2/3 =8/12

Step 3: Add or subtract.

Step 4: Change to mixed number, or reduce to lowest term.

To change an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the

denominator. The quotient will be the whole number of the mixed number, the remainder
will be the numerator of the fraction, and the divisor will be the denominator.

The final answer is 1 5/12.

Do the operations.

3/8 + 5/6 -1/4

Try It! Solution

Step 1: Find the least common denominator (LCD).

The LCD of the given fractions is 2X2X1X3X2= 24 .

Step 2: Express the fractions into similar fractions whose denominator is equal to the
LCD.3/8 = 9/24

5/6 = 20/24

¼ = 6/24

Step 3: Add or subtract.

9/24 + 20/24 -6/24 = 23/24

Step 4: Change to mixed number or reduce to lowest terms.

The answer is already in lowest terms.

Therefore, 3/8 +5/6 -1/4 = 23/24

Tips

 Answers should always be in simplest form. Simplest form is also the same as
lowest term.
 If the answer is an improper fraction, change it to mixed number. An improper
fraction is a fraction whose numerator is greater than its denominator.
 If the answer is not in lowest terms, reduce it to lowest terms.
 Answers not in simplest form are marked as incorrect.

Key Points

To Add or Subtract Similar Fractions:

 Add or subtract the numerators.

 Copy the denominator.
 If the answer is an improper fraction, change it to mixed number.
 Make sure that fractions in the answers must be in lowest terms.

To Add or Subtract Dissimilar Fractions:
