Installation Steps 1. Set up computer hardware I/O components (internal modem,
local area network adapter card, RS-485 serial communica-
tion interface).
Note: Your computer supplier may have completed this
step already.
2. Install the Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 Server operating
system software.

step already.
3. If ComfortVIEW is to be used to access other ComfortVIEW
systems remotely, install the Remote Access Connection
Manager Service (Dial-up Networking).
4. For the multi-user version only, install Microsoft SQL Server
database management system software. For up to 5 users you
can use SQL Server Express. For more than 5 users, you must
use SQL 2005 Standard or Enterprise. (ComfortVIEW single
user Version 3.2 integrates the SQL Server Express database
installation process automatically, as part of the installation.)
You will find information for each of these steps in this manual.
Product Package Your ComfortVIEW product package contains the following mate-
rial:
ComfortVIEW CD-ROM — Contains your ComfortVIEW software
and is used during software installation. Keep this CD-ROM in a
safe place after installation is complete, as it may be needed for
system upgrade or repair.
Documentation — ComfortVIEW documentation is provided in
hard copy and in electronic format on the ComfortVIEW CD-ROM.
The electronic manuals are installed on your computer as part of the
ComfortVIEW installation in the CVIEW\HELP subdirectory.

Hardware
Requirements
and Setup
Your computer vendor must verify that the computer hardware and
printers purchased to run ComfortVIEW are compatible with the
Windows operating system you will be running (XP/2000). The
hardware should be on the Hardware Compatibility List delivered
with your Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows 2003 Server
software. Microsoft supports only devices that are on the Hardware
Compatibility List. If one of your devices is not on this list, contact
the device manufacturer to request a Windows XP, 2000, or 2003
Server device driver, if one is available.
Note: The minimum operating system for new installations is
Windows XP, Service Pack 2 with Microsoft .NET Frame-
work 2.0.

Video Resolution and ComfortVIEW is designed to run with a minimum display resolu-
Display tion of 800 x 600 pixels. You must have a video adapter card with 4
Mb video RAM (that is compatible with your operating system) to
achieve this display resolution.
Note: Windows runs in standard VGA mode (640 X 480 pixel)
resolution with almost any brand of video adapter card.
However, you will find that several ComfortVIEW
screens will not completely fit in the display.
You can achieve the super VGA display resolution that
ComfortVIEW requires only by using a video adapter card that is
compatible with your operating system. Windows is delivered with
display driver software for the most popular video adapter cards.
Printer Requirements The following are the basic printer requirements for ComfortVIEW:
• Laser*
• Ink jet*
• 24-pin dot matrix printer(s)*
You can use one printer for Alarms and Reports, or two or more
printers each dedicated to different functions.
*These devices must be on the Hardware Compatibility List deliv-
ered with your operating system software.

Configuring Internal For ComfortVIEW to fully operate, your internal hardware input/
Hardware I/O output (I/O) components must be installed correctly. A common
Components problem encountered when installing desktop computer systems are
address and Interrupt Request (IRQ) setting conflicts among internal
hardware I/O components such as LAN adapter cards, modems, and
serial ports. Windows Device Manager should be consulted to verify
that all hardware is correctly installed and operational. Some typical
settings for components used with ComfortVIEW are as follows:

Windows
Installation
Alarm Manager
Windows
Installation
ComfortVIEW operates under the Microsoft Windows 2000 Profes-
sional and Server or XP Professional operating systems. The proper
operating system must be installed and running on your computer
before you begin installing ComfortVIEW.
19
If your computer is not always going to be connected to a LAN, be
sure to also install the NetBEUI protocol in addition to TCP/IP.
Information on installation and support for NetBEUI under Win-
dows XP can be found in the appendix of this manual.
Network Card:
• The multi-user version will only operate if you successfully
install a local area network card and its associated Windows
device driver. If the network card was installed at the time that
Windows was installed on the PC, then it is likely that the local
area network card device driver was successfully installed
during the Windows installation process. See the Hardware
Setup section of this manual's Hardware Requirements and
Setup chapter.
Networking Without a Network Card:
• If you have ComfortVIEW single-user version your computer
may not contain a network card. If this is the case, be sure to
select the standalone option when installing ComfortVIEW.
Windows XP File You must enable file sharing on Windows XP computers that are
Sharing running ComfortVIEW server software. You do this using the
Network wizard. Follow the instructions below:
1. Right click on My Network Places, and select Properties.
20
Other Required In order to complete the Windows installation, you may be required
Information to supply the following information:
Domain Name:
• This name is used only when a Windows domain server is
present on a local area network.
Workgroup Name:
• This name identifies and categorizes Windows workstations
located on a local area network.
Computer Name:
• The computer name may consist of up to 15 characters, limited
to the characters A-Z, 0-9 and the dash (-). This name must be
unique if the computer is on a local area network. Even if you do
not intend to connect the computer to a local area network
sometime in the future, you should assign unique names to your
standalone computers during the installation process. SERVER,
CLIENT1, and CLIENT2 are examples of valid computer
names.
Administrator Password:
• During the installation, you are prompted to enter the adminis-
trator password (up to 14 characters). To log into Windows after
installation, you will use the user name Administrator and the
password that you enter here. If you forget the password that
you supplied during installation, and there is not another user
with administrator level privilege, you must run the Windows
installation program again in order to perform administrative
level functions.
Note: Passwords are case sensitive.
Suggestion: Use a standard Administrator password for all
installations.
21
Windows User Name and Password:
• During Windows installation, you set up the Administrator
account. Eventually, all ComfortVIEW users will require a
Windows user name and password. After Windows is installed,
you can use the Computer Manager application under the Ad-
ministrative Tools program group to add an additional user
name with Administrator rights and additional users. See your
Windows documentation for complete instructions on adding
users.
Emergency Repair • The ERD helps you to repair problems with your system files,
Disk (ERD) startup environment, and partition boot sector of the boot vol-
ume. This disk should be updated after installing
ComfortVIEW. To update your ERD in Windows 2000, select
Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup and then
select Emergency Repair Disk.
Event Viewer • The Windows Event Viewer tracks various non-critical system-
type events on your computer. It is a good place to gather infor-
mation for troubleshooting computer problems. After installing
Windows, you should enable the Event Viewer's Overwrite
22
Events as Needed option. This will ensure that the Event Viewer
logs do not reach their capacity. The Event Viewer is located in
Windows Administrative Tools. Be sure to enable the Overwrite
Events as Needed option in all Event Viewer logs — System,
Security, and Application.
23
If you change the computer name of a workstation that has a
CCN connected to it (ComfortVIEW server or client w/
communications) those CCN(s) will now display as Database
Only . You must now enter the Carrier Network
Manager application, select the CCN(s), and use the Config-
ure menu’s Modify command to modify the CCN access
method. For instructions, see the Adding/Modifying CCNs
section of the ComfortVIEW Operation Manual's Carrier
Network Manager chapter, or refer to ComfortVIEW on-line
help.

ComfortVIEW Reports You must use the Windows Add Printer wizard to create a printer at
on a Local (Attached) each ComfortVIEW workstation that has an attached report printer.
Printer For example, you might typically attach your printer to the
ComfortVIEW Server workstation. If you do, you must create the
printer for the Server workstation. Enter the Windows Add Printer
function and follow the prompts to set up a printer as shown in the
report printer properties below. If necessary, refer to your Windows
manual for instructions on creating printers using the Add Printer
function.

h. From the menu, select File, Exit, and when prompted to
save the console settings to SECPOL.MSC, click on Yes.
ComfortVIEW Reports You may want to direct the printing of a ComfortVIEW report to a
on a Network (LAN) shared printer attached to another workstation on your Local Area
Printer Network (LAN). For example, a user at a ComfortVIEW Client
workstation may want to direct a ComfortVIEW report to print on
the printer attached to the ComfortVIEW Server workstation.
ComfortVIEW is unable to send reports directly to shared network
printers, but by following the steps below, you can "trick"
ComfortVIEW into thinking that your shared network printer is
actually attached directly to your ComfortVIEW Client workstation.
Perform the following steps once for each Windows user account at
each ComfortVIEW workstation that will be sending reports to a
shared network printer.
ComfortVIEW Printers Alarms are sent directly to the LPT printer ports that you specify
Dedicated to Alarm using the ComfortVIEW Setup application. You can use a USB
Logging Only printer as an alarm logger, but you must follow the special instruc-
tions below. Regardless of the type of printer, make sure that the
printers used for alarm printing have been added to Windows using
the Add Printer function before proceeding with the steps below. If
necessary, refer to your Windows manual for instructions on creat-

LAN (for example, ALMPRINT).
75
Example: NET USE LPT2: \\NODE1\ALMPRINT will
connect LPT2 to the printer shared as ALMPRINT attached
to workstation NODE1.
ComfortVIEW Alarms You can use a single printer for both report printing and alarm
and Reports on the logging. Make sure that the printer you wish to use has been added
Same Printer to Windows using the Add Printer function before proceeding with
the steps below. If necessary, refer to your Windows manual for
instructions on creating printers using the Add Printer function.
