Pegasus Seals

Poseidon manufacturers shaft seals for water, grease and oil lubricated shaft installations. Every
lubrication requires its own specific sealing, the Pegasus seal is available in different options to meet
those requires. Shaft sizes from 50mm up to 300mm are in the range of the Pegasus seal. The seal
meets modern high quality standards and is BV type approved. The Pegasus seal is developed for no
leaking applications.

Main features

• The Pegasus seal allows both big axial and radial movements.
• The housing is standard manufactured of seawater resistant bronze but is also available in
aluminum.
• The Pegasus seals are available in a Standard (no wearing liner) and a Deluxe (with wearing
liner) version.
• Both Standard & Deluxe Pegasus Seals can be equipped with a Stand By Seal or/and a buffer
ring.
• The buffer ring guarantees that the shaft will make no uncontrolled movements that can
cause leaking. The buffer ring is required when no bearing is positioned right after the seal.
• Split seals are available. Using these it is NOT required to demount the shaft from the
gearbox flange when changing seals.
• The Pegasus seals are approved by all classification societies.

The Pegasus Seal comes in different options for different kinds of lubrication.

Open water lubrication

For open water lubrication of the shaft, Poseidon has developed the Pegasus inboard seal. This seal
closes the inboard side of the shaft and makes it possible to lubricate the shaft with sea/river water.
The seal is developed for ‘no leaking’ applications.

Closed lubrication

For closed lubrication of the shaft, Poseidon manufactures the outboard seal to close the shaft along
with the inboard seal. Water, oil and grease lubrication are all possible with a closed shaft lubrication
system. According to the kind of lubrication, different options are available for the inboard seal as
well as the outboard seal to meet the required.

Wearing liner

There are two main types of Pegasus’ seals; the Standard and Deluxe version. On the Standard
version the lip seals run directly on the shaft. On the Deluxe version the lip seals run on a bronze
wearing liner. We can optionally supply this liner with a special ceramic layer which gives the seal an
enormous life span.

Standby seal

The standby seal is an by oil pressure inflated rubber seal that can be used in case of emergency.
When maintenance on the seal is required, the standby seal can be inflated, which gives the
costumer the possibility to do maintenance work on the seal, without having to slip the vessel.
