ECOBLOCKS

Description of the Product

Ecoblock is an innovated type of hollow blocks incorporated with specific types of plastic, High Density
Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polypropylene (PP) as partial replacement for sand. Essentially, these plastics have
been melted down which resemble interlocking hollow blocks, ready to be used as the fundamental building
material for sustainable construction projects. It has undergone research processes and testing in the DPWH.
Based from the result, it has a bulk density of 1198.25 kg/m3 (vs 1234.46 kg/m3 of standard hollow blocks) and
compressive strength of 3.56 MPa (vs 2.58 MPa of standard hollow blocks).

Uses of the Product

Every product aims to provide a number of benefits to its customers to attract many customers. Value-
adding has now become a strategy in order to outwit the existing competitors of companies. The following are
the uses of the proposed products.
 It can be used as readily available product with much stronger compressive strength and much lower
density compared to conventional hollow blocks.
 The use of plastic as partial replacement for sand provides good thermal and sound resistance.
 It can be reinforced to increase lateral resistance against earthquakes and typhoons
 It has 20+ years lifespan

Contribution to the society

The result of the study will be benefitting to the community and the environment. Moreover, the
importance of this study can be reviewed in the following perspective:
Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR). The incorporation of plastic wastes
in the production of blocks will benefit them in the conservation of plastic wastes and minimizing of waste
disposal costs.
Citizens and Community of Daet, Camarines Norte. It can make the construction supply help citizens
of Daet, Camarines Norte in solving problems in waste plastics, and prevent floods in the community that are
highly producing of plastic waste. This will also minimize the issue of throwing plastic materials on their
community.
Readers and Students. This study can be a reflection to readers who have an insight of Civil
Engineering not only as a construction theory and building, but also being an investigators and inventors also of
material and ecologist. This study can also be a basis for students looking for responses regarding the
considerations of problems about their community, cities, regions and the whole country.
Housing manufacturing companies. The outcome of this study will give them an understanding of a
new product that came from recycled plastic materials.
National Housing Authority (NHA). The content of this study will give interesting information in
order to help them in presenting and making houses with a different kind of material that is made from a
recycled plastics.
Target Market: House Builders and Hardwares in Daet, Camarines Norte

The table shows the raw materials used per unit of hollow blocks. The amount of raw materials was
based from the production capacity and total production cost.

Cost of Product Per Unit: 8.238 PHP

Selling Price: 10 PHP

Profit Per Unit: 10 (Selling Price) – 8.238 (Cost of Product Per Unit) = 1.762
