5 TEMS Investigation Backpack Use
The photo below shows the backpack exterior.

5.1 Phone Doors

This photo shows the backpack’s internal plastic
liner assembly. For clarity, the external cloth
backpack has been stripped away. In this image
the left-hand phone door is closed, which is the
normal position of both doors when operating and
carrying the backpack. Note that the phones and
scanner are optional items.

NT15-50138, 1.0, 11/2/2015 3

This view shows the phone doors open. Again
the backpack cloth is not shown for clarity. The
phone doors can be opened with the liner
installed inside the cloth backpack. When the
doors are open the user can access the control
panel, the batteries, and the optional scanner.

5.2 ACU R2 Placement

The ACU R2 is placed in the bottom of the plastic liner. It is held to the liner with Velcro strips
which adhere both to the liner and to the ACU R2 assembly.
One USB and one audio filter cable are routed from the ACU R2 to each of the four phone
holders. Use the four holes in the plastic liner to pass cables through to the holders. The
USB cables are provided with the backpack; the audio filter cables, however, are sold
separately.
See the image on the next page.

5.3 Ravpower Extreme Li-Polymer Battery
The DC output voltage of the battery shall be set to 12 V DC. Only the DC Output connector
(item  in the figure below) is affected by this setting. The USB 1 and USB 2 connectors will
always provide 5 V output.

5.3.1 Instructions for Setting DC Output Voltage

1. Make sure nothing is connected to the battery output or input connectors.
2. Press and hold the battery power button for 5 seconds. The voltage output will begin to
flash on the LCD display.
3. Release and press the power button repeatedly until “12V” is shown on the display. Then
stop pressing the button and wait until the battery display goes blank.
4. Press and release the power button once more and make sure the display reads “12V”.

Warning
Failure to set the battery output voltage to 12 V DC may result in damaging the
ACU R2 unit.

5.3.2 Battery Placement

1. Slide the battery into the receptacle located on top of the ACU R2.

5.4 ACU R2 GPS Antenna
The intended location for the GPS antenna is between the plastic liner and the cloth exterior
in the upper left corner.

5.5 Cooling Fans

The air flow inside the backpack is from bottom to top with the fans on. The cooling fans can
be turned off to conserve battery power if needed. However, it is recommended that the
cooling fans be used whenever the backpack is operational.
Note that the fans will run even if the phones are not in use. Please turn off the fans when
the backpack is not being used in order to conserve battery power.
The fan power switch is located on the bottom fan cover.
