Effectiveness and Problem of Solid Waste Management in Parit Raja Night

Abstract
The problem of solid waste disposal, there is no end. Humans are the cause of the production and
disposal of solid waste, no matter where they are. The solid waste problem will become more serious
if the production of this waste occurs in areas of the market or even business sites of the area should
be preserved and maintained its privileges as a place to look for daily needs. This study was carried
out in the Parit Raja Night Market, Batu Pahat as this place is one of the effective disposal of solid
waste is a serious and is the main place around Parit Raja, Batu Pahat to find the supply of food and
daily necessities will invite trouble if the problem of solid waste management the poorly managed.
The objectives of this study is to raise awareness towards cleanliness, to explore the ways to improve
the sanitation and good management of the solid waste at market Parit Raja, and to overcome the
health and hygiene issues.

Background of Study
Cleanliness can be described as the state of being free from germs and the process of achieving
and maintain that state. In emphasizing the ongoing set of habits for purposes of prevention and
maintenance, cleanliness concept differs from purity, which is a moral, physical or ritual state of
being free from pollutants. Cleanliness is related to disease prevention hygiene. Cleanliness and
sanitation in the home, community and personal cleanliness are crucial to terminate the spread of
germs and preventing illnesses. This study was carried out in the Parit Raja Night Market, Batu
Pahat as this place is one of the effective disposal of solid waste is a serious and to explore and
overcome the sanitation and hygiene issues of the solid waste at the night market.
Problem Statements
The morality and habits some of the authorities, community, and the individual are crucial about
hygiene issues in the Parit Raja Night Market but the sellers of night market at Parit Raja are
unaware about the hygiene. There are a lot of solid waste that littered at everywhere without a
good management of the solid waste and this will cause diseases and pollution. The community
are unaware about this cleanliness issues or have an intention to keep the night market in a good
hygiene and prevent any pollutant happened.

Research Questions
A proper solid waste management is important for a better and cleaner country thus leads
to a better world. In Japan, the people have practiced reuse and recycling, incineration with air
pollution control, and all sort of pollution-prevention practice in order to achieve what Japan have
achieved now. Thus, this leads to the significance of this study, which is to increase awareness of
some Malaysians whom might still have not realised the importance of a proper solid waste
management. All sides, start from the authority to the citizens should be responsible and well aware
and practice an effective solid waste management to a sustainable country. Malaysia is one of the
most successful developing countries in term of economic growth and stable politic conditions.
Therefore, it must not be a problem to authorise and raise awareness towards solid waste
management even though it might still be a challenge in Malaysia. Some people might not have
enough knowledge and information about solid waste management therefore; this study is to
increase the knowledge of the people. Besides that, the significance of this study is also to
encourage people to practice and effective solid waste management start from their home. This
study might also provide people some insight to developing countries like Malaysia towards
Malaysian government is committed to improve the quality of its citizens. In fact, solid
waste management is one of the crucial factors that influencing the quality of life in urban area.

Malaysia government has striven toward effective solid waste management through plenty of plans
and strategies. For that reason, people should realise the government effort in order to take actions
as well. This study might be beneficial to some people to increase their knowledge that Malaysia
is striving to practice an effective way of solid waste management. One might become responsible
and practice a proper solid waste management for a cleaner and sustainable country for a better
The town of Parit Raja located in Batu Pahat district have experience major changes
especially in terms of urban growth and development even is still happening to this date. Many
higher education institutions are located in Batu Pahat district for example, Universiti Tun Hussein
Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Sri Gading and Institut Pendidikan Guru
Kampus Tun Hussein Onn. With these developments of higher institutes, Parit Raja has an
increasing number of people resides within the area. Logically, when there are a growth in
population, the amount of waste will most likely to increase and we could see that these are
happening in the town of Parit Raja. Hence, this study is observe on the effectiveness of the solid
waste management in Parit Raja in order to have a better vision for the people.
The change in rate and pattern of solid waste generation is influenced by several crucial factors
such as demography factors and urban lifestyle (Vergera and Tchobanoglous, 2012). As it is well
aware that the government have plan through many strategies and authorise many rules and
regulations in order to strive towards an effective solid waste management. Many lingering
questions and problems came into mind. We should not be putting the responsibility solely on the

government but all parties should take part as well. In this study that are done in Parit Raja, Batu
Pahat, the problems we could clearly see is in the farmers market and night market. We could see
many trash that people litters on the road that had become an eyesore. This should not be happening
The government have committed to bring change for Malaysia. This should go down to the
authority to carry the responsibility as the government delegate to enforce the law. Next, the
vendors/sellers should always keep their spot in the market clean even after their booth is closed.
However, do most of the sellers/vendors have the favourable attitude and awareness towards the
solid waste management? Might be the same situation for the citizen. Do they have the favourable
attitude towards an effective solid waste management? Will they no longer be littering as they
please? This should not be a restriction for developing country like Malaysia towards a sustainable

Awareness
Awareness about how important good waste management system can prevent from multiple of
bad impact to the area of the night market and to prevent from contribute to air and water
pollution. Self-awareness and important toward both traders and visitors to keep the place

Methodology
Sample
The sample of this study was the farmers market and the night market at Parit Raja and Taman
Universiti.
Instrument
Questionnaire was used in a survey to collect all the data of this case. The questionnaire
consists about 10 items. The questionnaire was given randomly to traders and visitor. There
are indicators scale 1 to 5. Scale 1 for strongly disagreed, scale 2 for disagreed, scale 3 for
