The history of LG System Air Conditioning Business Unit goes back to 1968, when the company (then called GoldStar) rolled out Korea’s first residential air conditioner. Since the company first began making chillers for large commercial buildings in 1970, the commercial air conditioning business has grown exponentially, especially within the last 20 years. The success of LG air condi- tioners has grown from very humble beginnings to become one of the giants in the highly competitive HVAC industry.

Among the company’s System Air Conditioners, its most well-known line is the MULTI V series. In 2004, the first generation of the MULTI V series hit the market. By the time the MULTI V IV came out in 2013, the line had added an energy saving function, a high pressure oil return and many other features that now define the MULTI V line as the best HVAC solution.

Moreover, LG has wide product and solution line up for various environment such as light commercial air conditioners, chillers and building management system. The company now offers a broad portfolio of air conditioner products that are compatible with any building, anywhere, including those which have limited space, skyscrapers that reach the clouds, large factories or giant concert halls.

BACKGROUND

North Block is a part of Rashtrapati Bhawan, the sprawling residential complex of the President of India. North Block houses the key offices of Ministry of Home, Ministry of Finance and the others. Ministry of Home is responsible for internal security of India and it operates 24/7 for 365 days in a year. The building was inaugurated in 1931.

CHALLENGE

The building is a heritage building, which is over 85 years old. It has mission critical offices and the access to the building is limited for just few hours. The customer was interested in replacing a legacy system and individual units with energy-saving VRF technology.

ON THE BASIS OF 11-YEAR POWER CONSUMP- TION ESTIMATES, LG WAS THE WINNER IN THE COMPETITIVE BIDDING WHERE ALL THE MAJOR PLAYERS PARTICIPATED.

Speaking on the project, Mr. Manoj Kumar Pandey, Execu- tive Engineer of CPWD said, “For the past decade, the focus of the government has been on energy efficiency. Due to the building’s unique structure, we needed an uncompromised air conditioning solution. CPWD devised a strategy with eminent experts to use the latest air condi- tioning systems without compromising on the basis features of the building. It was concluded that VRF will be the most suitable for HVAC solution.”

He continued, "We are constrained not just by the heritage status, but also that the building houses VVIPs. Access

timing was a major limitation in the execution of the project. LG has definitely burnt midnight oil to get this project completed on time. In day, there was a zero possibility of

doing any work at all.”

Dilli Haat is a traditional market complex, designed with open air stores and applications. In order to appeal to the contemporary audience, Dilli Haat Janak Puri is designed as a combination of open air market with a state-of-the-art air-conditioned facility.

The client invited all major vendors for competitive bidding. At the end of the bidding process, LG’s HVAC solutions were chosen over the others.

Located in the heart of the city in the area of over 8 acres, the place is a marvel both in terms of its architecture and air-conditioning. Using MULTI V IV system, the place has 46 air-conditioned shops, a food court with 29 outlets, a 960 sq. mt. exposition hall, 800-seater air-conditioned audito- rium, area, offices and other public areas.

Dilli Haat Janak Puri was a major challenge for any HVAC brand. It has 60% air-conditioned areas while the rest are not equipped with air-conditions.

THERE ARE VARIOUS APPLICATIONS FOR WHICH AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEMS WERE NEEDED INCLUDING EXHIBITION AREA WITH A CAPACITY OF 800 SIMULTANEOUS VISITORS, SHOPS, FOOD COURT AND OTHER AREAS.

Major challenge was to design the place for energy efficiency while retaining the comfort for the visitors. Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) wanted the HVAC partner to work closely with them to execute and maintain the project.

LG’s design team worked with Dilli Haat from the planning stage of the project to implementation. The project was executed to the satisfaction of the client.

IREO is a leading property developer in India. They are present in the market since 2004. They have assembled one of the largest property portfolios with a focus on the Delhi NCR, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Goa regions.

IREO provides state-of-the-art luxury air-conditioned apartments. They were building their iconic new complex in Gurgaon suburb of Delhi. The project is aptly called Ireo Uptown. Each apartment promised to be a pool of fresh ideas moulded into living spaces.

SOLUTION

Centralized air-conditioned apartments have higher main- tenance cost compared to other apartments. It dissuades the buyers. Also, there are many investors who are interested to invest in the property and will not like to use the property in the short-run. Centralized air-conditioning for unoccupied apartments would have resulted in a lot of wastage of energy.

Power tariff in Gurgaon is higher than Delhi. In order to attract customers and also to build a competitive edge, IREO targeted over 30% reduction in cost of energy compared to split air-conditioners.

THERE WAS A MAJOR SPACE CONSTRAINT FOR THE INSTALLATION. THE CLIENT WAS LOOKING FOR A SPACE SAVING SOLUTION.

THE SPACE AVAILABLE IN THE BALCONY WAS VERY LESS AND IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO ACCESS.

Each unit was fitted with an individual MULTI V S unit. It was a major challenge to implement with a very constrained area and low availability of space.

It was the best option as it was energy efficient while helping to maintain the beauty of the apartment, which directly serves the independent needs of the unit.

Moreover, advanced designing approach in terms of technology and engineering was required for this high-rise building located specific area with high average tempera- ture. Based on close analysis of CFD data, LG team was able to provide the best installation environment.

Mercedes-Benz was looking for an air-conditioning solution for the office complex. One of the largest Mercedes-Benz plants in Asia – the iconic Pune factory.

Mr. GaneshDalvi, Deputy General Manager, said, “Mercedes believes in a long-standing relationship with our vendors. We have many vendors that have been working with us for the past several years. The company does not believe in changing its partners often.”

There are many features that we may have consid- ered for the current requirement. However, there can be additional product features that we not have considered but may be useful for future. LG came up with an excellent design for the project.Excellent quality of products, local manufacturing, commitment for quality and sound techni- cal team went in favour of LG.”

Dorabjee Estates is one of the leading developers in Pune. It was building a new mall in the heart of new residential mini-township. They were looking for an air-conditioning solutions partner.

Dorabjee’s Royal Heritage Mall is located in a prominent area. The project is a combination of shopping mall, food & beverage, 6 screen multiplex, banquet hall, office block, service apartments and more spread over 550,000 sq. ft. It is being built with heritage concept with a combination of Roman and British architecture.

It is built with exteriors of a heritage property as a boutique mall.

SOLUTION

Before the project was commissioned Dorabjee’s Director visited LG’s factory in Korea. He personally reviewed major innovations that were happening and directed his engineering team to consider VRF system.

Chillers work on low suction pressure as first water is cooled to 7°C and then water cools the air. VRF uses direct expansion system which directly cools the air. The compression ratio is lower than chillers. The air-condi- tioning solution is based upon VRF based MULTI V IV series.

Pune has seen a rampant growth over the past few years. The city is facing acute water shortage.

Many malls use chillers for air-conditioning, which require a constant supply of water.

IN THIS CASE THE AIR-CONDITIONING SOLUTION HAD TO BE DESIGNED WITH MINIMAL OR NO USE OF WATER.

There was no space available on roof as the client had planned for a rooftop football field with an open air restaurant.

ENTIRE MALL IS AIR-CONDITIONED WITH NO USE OF WATER. UNLIKE CHILLERS, MULTI V DOES NOT NEED WATER FOR COOLING.

MULTI V IV units are strategically placed in balcony areas, which leave the roof completely available for the client.

Using VRF also gave a host of energy saving advantage that was initially not planned. Not only it reduced the operational costs of the mall, it made the maintenance lower for the individual tenants of the building.

Since the rooftop is not needed for chiller system, it was aesthetically designed and was used for building a large football field with an open air restaurant.

Titan, India’s leading manufacturer and retailer of watches, was setting up a production line of world-class stainless steel cases at a new facility in outskirts of Coimbatore with a production capacity of 1 million cases per annum.

The plant covers an area of 11.3 acres and has facilities such as tool design, tool manufacturing, press shop, machining, polishing and assembly supported by related service functions like planning, facilities management, machine maintenance, costing, and quality management.

Inbiopro focuses on the process and product development of biologicals. It was building comprehensive research-to-man- ufacture facility in the areas of oncology, rheumatoid arthri- tis, cardio vascular diseases and other areas.

LG OFFERED HEPA FILTER WITH 0.3 MICRON RATING AND 99.9% EFFICIENCY THAT COMBINES A VARIETY OF TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES WITH SUPERIOR DUST HOLDING CAPACITY.

The air filter was suggested in order to provide outstanding performance and energy efficiency while minimizing maintenance needs and reducing life cycle cost. It reduced substantively a wide range of particulate and gaseous contaminants, including: ultra-fine particulate, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odours and biological contami- nants. LG provided Dynamic AirQTM report to help the client assess the indoor air quality.

The lab comprises of cell and molecular biology, assay, microbial fermentation, processing, and other areas. For high degree of accuracy and quality, the equipment needs to operate at a constant temperature for high degree of accuracy and quality of the underlying biological process.

The factory was located in an area of extremely poor air quality. The client was interested in a product that can deploy a high quality air filter for superior indoor air quality. The client also wanted a DX coil to be implemented on an Air-Handling Unit.

Speaking on the project, Mr. S. Jagmohan, Vice President of Inbiopro, said, “This facility has R&D and a process development lab. There were a couple of criteria that we had set for selection. We did not have a big place for chillers, cooling tower, and others. We were looking for VRF. We also wanted the products to be customized as per our requirements. The timelines for delivery were also quite short.”

He added, “With local production, LG was perhaps the only one who was able to deliver in time. We wanted an extremely reliable air-conditioning provider. We did a thorough due diligence and we are glad that we preferred LG over our existing partners.”

COMPARISON ON PIPING – VRF vs VAV

VRF system uses a series of indoor units attached to a single output unit. For Monotel, the output unit is installed in its terrace, keeping in mind the aesthetic beauty of the infrastructure.

The client chose enclosed type of air conditioners with ceiling concealed duct, which offer the flexibility to enhance the interiors and aesthetically beautify them. BACKGROUND

This luxury residential apartment is located in a very posh area of Kolkata. Its beautiful design catches the eyes of consumers. The customers are only offered 3 to 4 bedroom air-conditioned apartments.

Initially the client was considering a centralized air-condi- tioning system with chillers.

LG HVAC TEAM DISCUSSED ABOUT THE CLIENT REQUIREMENTS AND SHARED THE ADVANTAGES OF USING DECENTRALIZED AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEM VIA VRF TECHNOLOGY OVER A CENTRAL- IZED SYSTEM FOR INDIVIDUAL APARTMENTS.

MULTI V III installed in these apartments was directly linked to their own energy meters. Indoor units were attached to one output unit located in the balcony of service area. Air Guide has been installed in the outdoor unit of HVAC of the building for air discharge. It helps in reducing the short cycling circulation of air, outdoor to provide more efficient cooling inside.

For common areas, VRF offered an optimal use of energy resources. Ducting requirements of VRF are minimal, and hence, more space was available for the client in the common areas.

CHALLENGE

The site offered multiple challenges. Initially, the project was envisaged using central air-conditioning where the apartment owners would need to pay high air-conditioning costs, depending upon the covered area of the apartment.

The client wanted a solution that will allow individual apartment owners to manage their own energy bills. The client also wanted the maximum area to be made available to apartment owners. They wanted to have a solution that occupies very less space for outdoor unit and ducting inside.

After the apartments were handed over to the owners, the individual apartments were to manage maintenance and operation for their air-conditioners. The common areas were designed to be of a higher ceiling height and there was also a constraint on the area available for ducting.

The project is huge and the residential complex requires different air-conditioning systems and installation catering to the needs of specific facilities.

The client was looking at reliable and good quality products which can be customized to different architec- tural parameters of various facilities. They wanted to work with technically sound experts that can coordinate well with the developer during the project implementation.

In all common areas, VRF was used, which provided seam- less air-conditioning solution. Ceiling cassette was used for indoor units.
