1. General
This part of the manual describes the functions of the generator
protection relay VAMP 210 and includes the relay operation
instructions. It also contains instructions for parameterization and
configuration of the relay and instructions for changing settings.
The second part of the publication includes detailed protection
function descriptions as well as application examples and technical
data sheets.
The Mounting and Commissioning Instructions are published in a
separate publication with the code VMMC.EN0xx.
2. User interface
2.1. General
The VAMP 210 protection relay can be controlled in three ways:
x Locally with the push-buttons on the relay front panel
x Locally using a PC connected to the serial port on the front panel
or on the rear panel of the relay (both cannot be used
simultaneously)
x Via the remote control port on the relay rear panel.

1. Introduction
This part of the user’s manual describes the protection functions,
provides a few application examples and contains technical data. This
part of the manual also includes the operating instructions.
Mounting and commissioning instructions are given in a separate
mounting and commissioning manual (VMMC.EN0xx).
1.1. Application
The numerical generator protection relay VAMP 210 includes all the
essential functions needed for protection of small or medium-sized
power generators in modern unmanned fully automatic power plants.
Further the relay includes several programmable functions, such as
arc, thermal, trip circuit supervision and circuit breaker protection
and communication protocols for various protection and
communication situations.
The generator protection relay provides comprehensive protection for
generators in various power plant types, such as hydro, steam and
diesel power plants. The same relay type can be used for the
protection of a single generator as well as for several generators
running in parallel.
The modern technology in association with an extensive self-
supervision system and a reliable construction ensures an extremely
high availability for the VAMP 210 protection relay.
2. Functions
The individual protection functions of the generator protection relay
VAMP 210 can independently of each other be enabled or disabled
according to the requirements of the intended application. See the
configuration instructions, Chapter 5 and 7, in the first part of this
manual.

The low-set stage (I>) of the overcurrent unit can be configured for
inverse time characteristic. Four sets of characteristic curves
according to IEC 60255-3 are available for the low-set stage, i.e.:
Normal Inverse (NI), Very Inverse (VI), Extremely Inverse (EI) and
Long Time Inverse (LTI).
Limitations:
1. The maximum measured current is 50 x In. This limits the scope
of inverse curves when the setting is more than 2.5 x In. See
Figure 2.1-1. E.g. at setting 4 x In the maximum setting relative
current is 12.5 x Iset/In although the curves are defined up to 20 x
Iset/In
2. The fastest possible operating time is about 60 ms at inverse time
characteristic according to curve types VI and EI.

When the generator pole voltage falls below the set voltage level, the
start current level of the overcurrent stage IV> also starts falling
linearly controlled by the voltage according to the characteristic curve
in Figure 2.2.2-1.
When the setting parameters are selected according to Figure 2.2.2-2
the function is said to be voltage controlled.
Note: The overcurrent function can be used as a normal high-set
overcurrent stage I>>>, if IY1 and IY2 are set to 100%.
The voltage setting parameters UX1 and UX2 are proportional to the
rated voltage of the generator. They define the voltage limits, within
which the start current of the overcurrent unit is restrained. The
multipliers IY1 and IY2 are used for setting the area of change of the
start level of the overcurrent function in proportion to the UX1 and
UX2 settings.
The voltage restrained/controlled overcurrent stage operates with
definite time characteristic. The start current IV> and the operating
time t> can be set by the user.
Parameters of the voltage restrained and voltage controlled
overcurrent stage:

When the negative phase sequence current just slightly exceeds the
set start level (K2) the operating time tends to become very long.
Therefore the maximum operating time has been limited to 1000
seconds, although the operating time calculated from the expression
would be longer.
Besides inverse time characteristic the unbalanced load unit can also
be configured for definite time operation characteristic.

2.5. Communication
2.5.1. PC port
The PC port is used for on-site parameterization of the relay, for
downloading of the program and for reading relay parameters to a
PC.
For connection to a PC, one RS 232 serial port is available on the
front panel of the relay. Any connection to the port is done with the
connection cable type VX 003.

2.7. Self-supervision
The functions of the micro controller and the associated circuitry as
well as the program execution are supervised by means of a separate
watchdog circuit. Besides supervising the relay the watchdog circuit
attempts to restart the micro controller in a fault situation. If the
restarting fails the watchdog issues a self-supervision alarm because of
a permanent relay fault.
When the watchdog circuit detects a permanent fault it always blocks
any control of the other output relays, except for the self-supervision
output relay.
Also the internal supply voltage is supervised. Should the auxiliary
supply of the relay disappear, an IF alarm is automatically given,
because the IF output relay is normally always energized when the
auxiliary supply is on and within the permitted range.
3. Applications
The VAMP 210 generator protection relay comprises all the essential
protection functions needed for a generator, except the differential
protection function.
Thanks to the comprehensive range of protection functions the
generator protection relay can be used as the main protection for a
variety of generators from small diesel power plants to large hydro
power plants in the power range from 1 to 100 MW.
Especially versatile and flexible protection functions are provided for
the generator earth-fault protection. These features are needed, when
for instance, several generators are connected in parallel to the same
busbar but their earthing principles differ.
The other energizing connections, except for the ones for the earth-
fault protection, are independent of the generator size and type. For
large generator a higher accuracy of the protection functions is
needed. Being based on numerical signal processing and high-
resolution A/D conversion the VAMP 210 generator protection relay
fulfils also these requirements.
The three generator protection applications on the following pages
illustrate how the flexibility of the VAMP 210 generator protection
relay can be utilized.

The generator protection relay VPG 210 is suitable for use in directly
earthed and high/low resistance earthed systems. The differential and
directional earth-fault protection provides a sensitive and selective
protection solution in high resistance earthed systems.
In directly earthed or low resistance earthed systems the non-
directional earth-fault stage constitutes a sufficiently selective earth-
fault protection when energized from two current transformers
forming a differential current connection.
The rotor earth-fault protection can be realized with the non-
directional earth-fault stage using the energizing current input I02 in
combination with a current injection device, e.g. type VEO-MSV.

Besides the typical generator protection functions the VPG 210 relay
includes the transformer earth-fault protection. Whatever phase
difference and voltage ratio of the transformer can be compensated in
the relay in case VTs and CTs are on different sides of the unit
transformer.
The earth-fault protection of the transformer is based on an OR-
function between the current inputs I01 and I02.
The stator earth-fault protection (reach 95%) is based on measuring
the fundamental frequency component of the residual voltage U0 with
the overvoltage stage (59GN).
Via the digital inputs of the relay various signals can be transferred
into the relay, such as information about the operation of a MCB in
the measuring circuit or circuit-breaker status information.
Figure 3.4-1. Trip circuit supervision when the circuit-breaker is closed. The supervised
circuitry in this CB position is double-lined. The digital input is in active state. The value for
R1 in this application is 3k3 and 2W. These can be calculated from the resistance and voltage
operating range of the coil of K1 and the tolerance of the wetting voltage.

circuitry in this CB position is doubled-lined. The value for R1 in this application is 3k3 and

and the tolerance of the wetting voltage.
