METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study used the descriptive-qualitative research method using an interview as

the main data gathering which is aimed to assess the mathematics learning performance
of grade 11 section Celsius student in Eastern Visayas Regional Science High School
year 2017-2018, particularly in determining the responses of the students based on their
different responses such as, learning, mental and social responses.

The factors that can affect the students’ learning mathematics performance and
suggested enhancements are gathered. The results of this study are the bases of the
recommended enhancement activities for the concerned citizens.

Instrumentation

The study employed questionnaires, documentary analysis, and observation in

gathering the necessary data in this research.

Questionnaire. The main gathering instrument of this study is the questionnaire.

The questionnaire with the open ended questions is designed by the researcher to suit the
intent of the study. It is composed of two parts. Part I are the mental response of the
respondents on their mathematics learning. The performances of the respondents are
measured by determining on how they adopted on their performance academically. This
section includes the possible performance and behavior of the students as they learn
mathematically. While on the last sector, part II are the social response of the students in
their mathematics learning performance. In where, the performance are measured
accordingly on how they responded on their surroundings, this also covered the
performance of the student since, socializing regarding academic matters only shows
their successful performance in their subjects.

Documentary Analysis. This technique are used to scrutinize office records,

relatives to the mathematical performance of the respondents in their mathematics
subject. This included their remark/by-grading grades in their mathematics subject, as to
sustain authenticity sake and reliability as it was believed that these documents are vital
in the present research.

Observation. In order to cross-check the validity and reliability of the data

gathered through the questionnaire, the researcher likewise observed the performance of
the subjects in their class.

Validation of the Research Instruments

The questionnaires with open-ended questions that are used in the data gathering
phase are subjected for a validation process. Since the instruments are designed by the
researchers that are based on their readings from the studies reviewed, it is proper to
validate it for clarification and suggestions. The validation came into two forms;

First, it was submitted to the experts, researchers’ subject teachers, Sir Darrel
Tibre, and Mrs. Rosario Nacar for further suggestions and clarifications.

Then, the suggestions they gave are considered in revising the questionnaire.
Formerly, the improvements and recommendations that are suggested by the instructor
are accepted. The final copies are reproduced for the actual gathering of the data.

Sampling Procedure

After determining the sample size, total enumeration was used as the non-
probability sampling; the students are picked randomly accordingly to the sampling
technique. However, as mentioned in the determination of sample size above, the
27

researcher included all of the grade 11 Celsius students since, the total enumeration are
used. Therefore, all of the subjects are the respondents.

However, in order to have a peaceful and well-organized gathering method, the

researchers gave each of the students’ questionnaires with open-ended questions and
distributed accordingly to their family names (alphabetically). There are 42 students in
the class of grade 11 Celsius. In order to get the respondents, the sample size should be
computed. But, since there are only 42 students in their class, the total enumeration are
used in determining the sample size of the group, however, it was decreased by 3 since
the respondents are included in the section, making the respondents only 39.

The total enumeration as the sampling technique, are used in this study in
determining the sample size of the group because there are only 39 students, hence, the
number of the individual is less than 100, and it is therefore ruled, that the subjects less
than 100 should be included in the study and all will be the respondents, as well as the
sample size of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering the data, the questionnaires are administered to the identified sample
respondents of the proposed study. But before undertaking the actual assessment, the
researchers secured the necessary permit from the respondents and the adviser of the
students. The researchers set the time and date in giving the questionnaires. A cover
letters are attached on the questionnaire to ensure the respondent’s confidentiality. The
researchers administered the questionnaire giving the respondents 30 minutes to answer
the questionnaire. Clarifications and sufficient instructions are given before answering
the questionnaires.

The planned study wherein, focuses on the mathematical learning performance of

the grade 11 Celsius in EVRSHS, has gone through methods and processes in analyzing
and evaluating the results. In gathering the results, the researchers administered the
28

questionnaire to the said respondents within 30 minutes, then, it was collected again by
the researcher as the start of the process. In that case, the results and data are gathered,
then, evaluating and investigating the results are successfully done.

Statistical Treatment

The data that are gathered through the use of questionnaire are organized, coded,
tallied, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted using the appropriate statistical measures and
procedures.

The following are the subjected statistical treatment/tools used in the study in
order to measure the results and findings:

Frequency Count and Conversion of Percentage. This tool was used to determine the
profile number of student-respondents in terms of age and sex. Used to identify the
number and percentage of the boys and the girls in the number of respondents who have
taken and answered the open-ended questions questionnaire.

Arithmetic means. This was used to express the average of some of the identified
characteristics especially on the age and sex of the student-respondents.

Standard Deviation. This statistic was employed to determine the collective perceptions
of the student-respondents related to their profile and data gathered.
