According to Worldometers, the Philippines’ population as of 2018 is 106, 876, 256.

Moreover the Philippines’ population is getting bigger and bigger than before. As a result, the
Philippines became overpopulated and in order for the population to be controlled and lessen, the
government proposed a case about this matter. The government filed a bill about same-sex
marriage to have birth control. Jesus Falcis, a gay lawyer filed a petition in marriage restriction
in the Family Code of the Philippines – which restraint the marriage to one man and one woman
only (Thoreson, 2018). What is same-sex marriage? Same sex marriage is a union of 2 people
having same sex. Legal Dictionary states that “same-sex marriage is the legal union between two
people of the same gender.” And, birth control or contraceptive is made to prevent pregnancy.
The goal of this position paper is to show that same sex marriage should not be implemented in
the Philippines in order to have birth control because the government does not approve the same
sex marriage, families are sanctified on the law, and family planning can be an alternative way in
order to control the population growth.

Same sex marriage should not implement in the Philippines in order to have birth control
because the government does not approve with it. The government is still under the process and
debate of legalizing the same sex marriage in the country. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque
as well as President Rodrigo Duterte have the same opinion about legalizing same sex marriage
which is it should not implement in the Philippines. Presidential spokesman Roque talks about
Human Rights Watch, he said that New York-based group that expressed hopes that same-sex
marriage would be legalized, was "detached" from the recent developments in the high court
while in the Philippines, based on the declaration of justices, same sex marriage is the case that is
difficult to win (Romero, 2018). During presidential campaign, President Rodrigo Duterte
considers legislation in having same sex marriage but before the Filipino community in Burma,
he said “That [same-sex marriage] won’t work for us. There’s the Civil Code, which says that [a
man] can only marry a woman” (Conde, 2017).

Another reason for not legalizing the same sex marriage in order to have birth control is because
families are sanctified on the law. In order to have a society, men and women develop a
relationship until it called family is the bedrock of society that follows a law. From the Executive
Order No. 209 July 6, 1987 which is The Family Code of the Philippines, the Title 1 Chapter 1
Article 1 states that marriage is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a
woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life. It
is the foundation of the family and an inviolable social institution whose nature, consequences,
and incidents are governed by law and not subject to stipulation, except that marriage settlements
may fix the property relations during the marriage within the limits provided by this Code
(Arellano Law Foundation, n.d.). This law serves as the proper guidelines in the family that
makes equality and discipline the society. The civil codes of the Philippines that focus on the
family avoid inhuman behavior that pertains to infertility crisis and humankind changes.

Lastly, family planning can be an alternative way in order to have birth control because it is
better than having contraceptives that makes also a negative effect the health of a mother.
According to Philstar.com (2016), family planning takes into account the proper timing of
childbirth, spacing childbirths a few years apart from one another. The capacity of the parents to
care for and provide for the children's needs, both present and future, are also important
considerations in family planning. In the Philippines, teenage pregnancy is the problem which
makes the population grows. Philippines need to have a required family planning in order to
control the population which avoids the risk of poverty. It also helps to know what are the right
or wrong behavior in order to build the children future.

As everyone knows, marriage is all about mutual love, respect, and support. Also,
marriage is a human right that is being denied for the LGBT community. Same sex marriage in
the Philippines is not yet implemented but some people are in favor of the said issue. They said
that there is a possibility that the Supreme Court will allow same sex marriage in the Philippines.
In an article, Conde (2017) stated that same sex marriage will allow and enable gays and lesbians
to marry and be with their loved ones with a fundamental right of equality as a human and with
non-discrimination that same sex marriage could help to be strengthen. Also, based on the article
of Torres (2018), Crescencio Agbayani Jr., a Protestant pastor, said "The issue of same-sex
marriage is not about religion. It is about equal protection of the law". According to Supena
(n.d.), there are many ways that same sex marriage should be implemented and be legalized in
the Philippines. One of them is in psychological, physical, and social well-being aspect of a
person, same sex marriage improves the stability of psychological and social well-being of a
person as they enjoy the equal right as human and its benefit of a normal Filipino citizen and has
the freedom with what they want to do. Same sex marriage also promotes bringing back one’s
self-esteem because same sex couples living in a country that does not support same sex
relationship tends to have low self-esteem. Same sex marriage also promotes family stability in
order for some children to be oriented that having a parent with same gender is not a hindrance
for them not to be a good parent.
