Local literature

Local studies are the literature that came here inside the country.
According to Mercado (2015), students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, reading is a
means of communication. It is an aspect of freedom where the society develops.

A study conducted by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) divulged that Filipino non-
school book (NSB) readers remain high at 80 percent which means four out of five Filipino adults
still read books and other materials. (Chavez, 2017)

The more students are exposed that reading is perceived as not stressful, the more positive
attitude and intention are likely to form (Tindugan, 2019)

Several studies were done concerning the reading habits, interests and information needs of
different user communities with the view of building library services that will meet these needs.
It is important that libraries conduct these studies to ascertain the relevance of services and
resources being provided for their users. (UKessays, 2017)

Reading is the identification of the symbols and the association of appropriate meaning with
them. It requires identification and comprehension. Comprehension skills help the learner to
understand the meaning of words in isolation and in context (Palani, 2012).

According to the survey, while more Filipinos preferred printed books, those who read e-books
and listen to audiobooks are increasing. They also spend more time reading e-books than printed
books. (Salikha, 2018)

Even with the massive amount of entertainment and other distractions around them, Filipinos still
savored reading, according to the latest nationwide reading survey. The 2017 National Book
Development Board (NBDB) Readership Survey indicated that 80 percent of Filipinos age 18 and
older read books. (De Vera, 2018)

It cited National Book Development Board (NBDB) data showing that only 16 percent of Filipinos
who read books do so forpleasure. (CMFR, 2013)
There were differences in the types of activities that people engage in during their leisure time,
with the children stating reading as their top recreational activity. (UKessays, 2016)

There were some consistent patterns among the heavier readers: For theyounger children
ages 6 to 11 being read aloud to regularly and havingrestricted online time were correlated with
frequent reading; for the older children ages 12 to 17 one of the largest predictors was whether
they had time to readon their own duri
ng the school day,” Rich noted. (Chavez, 2017)
