Fractions Unit Plan

Teachers: Brooke Webster & Tyla Milich

Rationale for unit: Assessment

According to the ACARA achievement standard children in year 4 & 5 need Formative:
to know and how to recognise common equivalent fractions. Children also Children will be assessed ongoing throughout the unit via observation,
are able to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. questioning, conversation and photos. This will allow for the teacher to
ensure all children are understanding the task being asked of them.

Summative:
Students will be assessed through a test style sheet to check for
understanding.

Achievement standard
YEAR 4:

They recognise common equivalent fractions in familiar contexts and make connections between fraction and decimal notations up to
two decimal places. Students locate familiar fractions on a number line.

YEAR 5:

Students order decimals and unit fractions and locate them on number lines. They add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. Students
continue patterns by adding and subtracting fractions and decimals.

lesson, they will use each letter to
determine the fraction of how much
of the letter is taking up the space of
grid paper. Then, they will glue their
grid paper letters onto a poster and
use coloured paper to create a stem
and leaves for each letter (letters
representing the flower). On each
leaf they will write the fraction of the
letter, and on the other petal they
will write the decimal of the letter
(so two leaves per letter ‘flower’)
