In Crisologo, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, the major attraction of Vigan is its
mestizo district which is filled with Spanish-style houses that evoke a
bygone era when its people lived prosperously because of the Manila-
Acapulco maritime trade.

a. Important Details Binatbatan Festival


Celebrated every first week of May in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. The festival
got its name from the Iluko term batbatin, or separating cotton balls
from the seeds of the local fruit tree kapas sanglay. The cotton balls
are then spun and used in weaving the abel.

a. Important Details Biag Ni Lam-Ang


Epic poem of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos region of the
Philippines written down by Pedro Bucaneg. The only complete epic
from a Christianized Philippine indigenous group. Exhibiting a mixture
of Spanish and indigenous cultures, the earliest written record of the
epic was in 1889.

a. Important Details Pandanggo Oasiwas


Spanish Fandango dance coming from the fishing town of Lingayen in
Pangasinan. Following their good catch, the fishermen will usually
celebrate by drinking wine and dancing, and by swinging and circling

Zarzuela Ilokana, Spanish lyric-dramatic genre. Tres Patrimoño,
depicts the life story of three Bigueño’s who played a major role in the
history of the Filipino people. They are: Spouses Diego and Gabriela
Silang, Leona Florentino and Padre Burgos. Their stories were relayed
in that order.

a. Important Details Pedro Bucaneg


Father of Ilocano Literature. It is presumed that Bukaneg's ancestry is
of the Itnegs. Born congenitally blind, he was thrown into a river by
his parents. With his extensive knowledge of the Spanish and Ilocano
language, he co-authored the Ilocano-Spanish grammar book and
dictionary. In 1621, he took part in the publication of the first Ilocano
book.

By Ilocano Painter, Juan Luna. The painting features a glimpse of
Roman history centered on the bloody carnage brought by gladiatorial
matches. Spoliarium is a Latin word referring to the basement of the
Roman Colosseum where the fallen and dying gladiators are dumped
and devoid of their worldly possessions.
