QUALITY ASSESSMENT – ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS

1. An engine of 250 mm bore and 375 mm stroke works on Otto cycle. The clearance volume is
0.00263 m3. The initial pressure and temperature are 1 bar and 50°C. If the maximum pressure
is limited to 25 bar, find the following a) Air standard efficiency b) Mean effective pressure.
2. In an engine working on dual cycle, the temperature and pressure at the beginning of the cycle
are 100°C and 1 bar. The compression ratio is 10. The maximum pressure is limited to 70 bar.
The total heat applied per kg of air is 1680 kJ/kg. Find the a) Pressure and temperature at all
salient points b) air standard efficiency c) Mean effective pressure. Consider all the processes to
be ideal.
3. A gas turbine works on air standard Brayton cycle. The initial conditions of the air are 25°C and 1
bar. The maximum pressure and temperature are limited to 3 bar and 650°C. Calculate a) cycle
efficiency b) heat supplied and rejected per kg of air c) work output per kg of air
4. Consider an air standard Brayton cycle in which the air enters the compressor at 1 bar and 20°C.
The pressure of air leaving the compressor is 3.5 bar and the temperature at the turbine inlet is
600°C. Determine per kg of air, the following : a) efficiency of the cycle b) heat supplied to air c)
work available at the shaft.
5. A F-12 vapour compression refrigeration system has a condensing temperature of 50°C and
evaporator temperature of 0°C. The refrigerating capacity is 7 Tons. The liquid leaving the
comdenser is saturated liquid and the compression is isentropic. Determine a) refrigerant flow
rate b) power required to run the compressor c) heat rejected in the condenser d) COP of the
system. Take enthalphy at the end of compression as 210 kJ/kg. The properties of F-12 are as
below :

Pressure
Temp (°C) hf (kJ/kg) hg (kJ/kg) sf (kJ/kgK) sg (kJ/kgK)
(Bar)
50 12.199 84.868 206.298 0.3034 0.6792
0 3.086 36.022 187.397 0.1418 0.6960

6. An air conditioned plant is to be designed for the following conditions :

Outdoor conditions = 9°C DBT and 8°C WBT
Required indoor conditions = 21°C DBT and 59% RH
Amount of free air circulation = 0.5 m3/min/person
Seating capacity of the office = 100
The required condition is achieved first by heating and then by adiabatic humidifying. Find the
heating capacity of the coil and the surface temperature required if the by-pass factor of the coil
is 0.32 and also the capacity of the humidifier.

7. A single stage reciprocating air compressor takes 1 m3 of air at 1.013 bar and 15°C and delivers
it at 7 bar. Assuming that the law of compression is pV1.35=C, clearance is negligible, calculate
the Indicated power of the compressor.
8. A three-stage air compressor takes in air at the rate of 20 m3/min at 1 bar and 300 K and
delivers at 64 bar. The index of compression is 1.3. Find the shaft power required to drive the
compressor if the mechanical efficiency is 80%.
9. A 1 tonne vapour compression refrigeration system works within the temperature limits of 268
K and 313 K. The refrigerant leaves the compressor dry and saturated. Calculate the COP if a) no
sub cooling is present b) if the refrigerant is subcooled by 20°C. Also calculate the power
required to run the refrigerator in both the cases. The refrigerant properties are :

Temp (K) hf (kJ/kg) hg (kJ/kg) hfg (kJ/kg) sf (kJ/kgK) sg (kJ/kgK) sfg (kJ/kgK) Cpl (kJ/kgK)
268 31.5 - 154 0.125 - 0.574 1.03
313 74.55 203.2 - -5 0.67 0.6725 -

10. An office is to be airconditioned for a staff strength of 25, when the outdoor conditions are 29°C
DBT and 73% RH. If the quantity of outdoor air supplied is 0.5 m3/min/person, find the capacity
of the cooling coil and the capacity of the heating coil. Also find the amount of water removed if
the required comfort conditions are 21°C DBT and 59% RH. Air is conditioned first by cooling and
dehumidifying and then heating.
