Project Management Post Graduate Program

Project Management Simulation Software Project - Tool Development (Phase 2)

Fall 2019
As part of the Project Management Post Graduate (PMPG) at Humber, a simulation software is used in the Project
Integration Simulation Course PMPG 5502. The PTB Software provided by Sandbox model to Humber (for a fee per
user), is used as part of the program to allow final semester Project Management Post Graduate (PMPG) students to
apply the knowledge, skills, concepts and methodologies acquired during the program in a software simulated project
management environment. It supports and facilitates how resources are utilized to complete project tasks while
considering the various project constraints of quality, times, cost and scope. The PMPG program has led the way as
one of the first such programs to introduce a simulation tool in its Project Management curriculum.

The software has two main components, the PTB Training Simulator and the PTB Scenario Builder, which are
introduced to students over the duration of their final semester of the program:

(1) The PTB Training Simulator allows students to simulate a project to meet the success criteria which was predefined
in various scenario cases within the software. The Scenarios provided with the software range from simple to
complex, thereby providing different levels of complexity/difficulty with the objective of challenging student’s
ability to balance project resources and making decisions on quality, time, cost and scope, known as the quadruple
constraints.

(2) The PTB Scenario Builder gives students an opportunity to create their own scenario for a project. Students are
required to establish the success criteria and project parameters for resources, time, quality, cost and scope then
run this scenario in the PTB Simulator to verify if the parameters can be achieved.

The PTB simulation software has been in use for seven years at Humber. It has been approved by the Project
Management Institute (PMI) as an educational tool that can be used to train students in the application of project
management methodologies as per PMI standards. Humber was the first college to offer this type of simulated project
management training in Canada.

As the project management discipline evolves and becomes more recognized, it was important to verify if the PMPG
resources/tools used to educate students at Humber are adequate to meet the learning outcomes/requirements
and facilitate student success in the rapidly changing project management environment. To this end, a team of
Project Management Program (PMPG) students completed Phase 1 of this project in Summer 2019. This included:
 a preliminary evaluation of the PTB software to identify potential areas of improvement and issues
(accessibility, usability and functionality) with the software and how it is impacting the requisite application
of skills and knowledge acquired by students within the Program, and
 an Environmental Scan/Evaluation of other simulation tools highlighting key features/technological trends
and identification of a potential list industry partners which could be further explored to support an in-house
build of a Project management tool to satisfy the Program requirements and achieve the learning outcomes
of the Project Integration course offered by Humber.

Phase 2 Project Summary
Based on the results of Phase 1, it has been recommended that Humber explore the in-house development of a
customized Project Management Simulation tool. This project may be undertaken as a multi-disciplinary Alternative
Capstone project, involving PMPG students, as well as the potential for involvement of student teams from other
Programs within the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology. Funding for this project will be acquired through
the support of Applied Research Department.

The multi-disciplinary approach will ensure that the requisite skill sets are involved in the development of this tool.
Phase 2 of this project will involve the following:

1. critical assessment of the documents prepared in Phase 1 with a focus on the key recommendations and
findings,
2. development of a detailed business case that outlines (schedules, scope of work) the System Development
Life Cycle (SDLC),
3. identification of key partners and resources (budget, team),
4. proposal of the necessary specifications and features required to satisfy the technical requirements of the
proposed Simulation tool,
5. development of wireframes/schematics of the proposed tool
6. development of a preliminary plan of action for Phase 3 of the project in Winter 2020, and
7. final presentation to management

The developed tool will include relevant, up-to-date, animated, user friendly and flexible Project Management
features that are aligned with emerging trends and learning outcomes.
