This document is not intended to replace any current NASS Contracting standards and is merely
intended to assist local management with communication between NASS Contracting management,
sub-contractors and any other parties involved with the project where communication obstacles may
exist.
Minimum standards are based on NASS Contracting HSE standards, international industry best
practise and applicable legal requirements / approved codes of practise.
Where no other standards exist or where standards are not directly referred to within existing NASS
Contracting Management Systems; some standards are based on International Industry Best Practice
and shall be implemented, monitored and reviewed accordingly.
Where physical areas or conditions on site are identified as weak or where improvement opportunities
are identified, specific visual standards can be displayed in strategic locations to raise awareness and
to encourage safe working practises i.e. where a fire extinguisher has been moved without
authorisation from it’s designated point to block a fire exit, the visual standard for fire extinguishers
can be displayed on or near the fire point to raise awareness.
This manual can also be printed as a handout document for issue to individuals and can be translated
locally to ensure suitable communication methods are in place for communicating our NASS
Contracting HSE standards and expectations.
This document can also be displayed at initial induction to ensure operatives are aware of the visual
standards manual as this will encourage safe working practises with specific subjects covered prior to
starting works on site.
Where HSE committees have been established on projects, a topic could be added to the weekly or
monthly meeting agenda where committee members or HSE representatives can feedback on the
current visual standards manual and suggest improvement opportunities or additional subjects to be
added.
The “layout” of each visual standard (VS) will remain consistent with the example below:
6. Document information
Key points have been included as a prompt for contractors and are based on best industry practise
throughout the United Kingdom. Where further applicable guidance documents or standards are
available to the specific subject, links may be included in the Further References section to further
assist local management with supporting material for the continuation of their HSE plans including
implementation of these visual standards and further development of ongoing improvement
strategies.
A feedback form has also been appended to the back of this document in appendix A. If any
stakeholder, contractor, internal management or a member of the workforce have ideas on further
visual standards or where further improvement opportunities have been identified specific to the
project, the feedback form should be completed and sent back to the nominated document
custodian as detailed on the feedback form.
