COLT ~ MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY

SUPER EARLY...SERIAL NUMBER 427!
shipped on February 15, 1912. These earliest 1911 pistols featured a highly polished
mirror blue finish with contrasting bright fire blued small parts. This finish was very
fragile, wearing quickly, and most were refinished at some point. The high polish blue
finish was discontinued early on (at about serial number 2400) and early 1911 pistols
with their original high polish finish still intact are quite scarce. In addition to having its
original finish, this pistol also has all of the earliest features, many of which were
discontinued early in production as some of the specifications of the 1911 pistol
"matured". The barrels in the earliest 1911 pistols were unique in that they were
manufactured slightly differently than were all others. The slot between the barrel lugs
was plunge milled in such a way that the link would not rotate and "fall to the back"
during assembly of the pistol (an annoyance any 1911 owner is familiar with). This
feature was discontinued early on in order to speed production. The barrel is unmarked,
as is correct for a type 1 barrel, and has the unique coarsely finished chamber area that
transitions to a well polished barrel tube. Other early features include:

◦ The serial number is located on the forward part of the frame (as seen through serial
7500)
◦ The magazine catch lock is concave or "dimpled" (as issued through serial 3189)
◦ Three of the stock screws have the early thin heads and corresponding early "tall"
stock bushings (one of the screws and its bushing have been replaced with the
standard thick head screw & short bushing in the past)
◦ The mainspring housing pin is convex on both ends ( as issued through approx. serial
6500)
◦ The recoil spring plug is not "punched" (as issued through serial 6500)
◦ The recoil spring guide has the early "sharp legs"
◦ Round top rear sight
◦ "Short" hammer spur
◦ The "rampant colt" trade mark is found within a circle behind cocking serrations
◦ "Exposed base" 2-tone lanyard loop magazine

This early Colt is in good overall condition. The factory original high polish finish shows
general normal wear and fading. Good finish still remains on the frame flats and other
protected areas. There is plenty of handling wear including numerous small nicks and
dings. There is some patina scattered around the gun and a couple of small surface rust
spots toward the front of the slide on each side and a couple larger spots on the front
grip strap. There is some minor etching here and there but no actual deep pitting. The
wear appears consistent between the frame and slide and there parts appear original to
one another. Internal wear patterns indicate that the barrel is likely original as well.
Some of the beautiful fire blue finish still remains on the trigger, safety, hammer, slide
stop, mag release, extractor, and to a lesser degree, the rear sight. The diamond

the center of the left panel, but no cracks or chips. I did note that the radius of the
original front sight has been filed just slightly lower and there are a few dents in the
bottom of the mainspring housing that may indicate a replacement. The magazine is in
very good condition with some corrosion on the base but no dents or cracks. This scarce
pistol is in excellent mechanical condition and functions correctly. The bore is in good
condition with strong, sharp rifling that shows even frost/fine pitting throughout...still
perfectly shootable.

A difficult pistol to find in any condition, this early first issue 1911 would make a
historically significant addition to any military collection!
