About Shimla
Shimla, also known as Simla, is a tourism paradise located in the midst of Himalayan cedars and pines at an altitude of
Page 1/12
2,205 m above sea level. Known as the 'Queen of Hill Stations', the destination is spread over an area of 18 sq km. The
capital city of Himachal Pradesh is located in the northwest Himalayas, in the northern part of India.
The erstwhile summer capital of the British features dense woodlands, apple orchards and beautiful landscapes.
Capitalising on grand old testimonies, colonial characteristics, peace-loving environment and adventure opportunities,
Shimla welcomes tourists from around the world. It offers beautiful façades from the crescent shaped ridge to the
descending valleys of evergreens.
History of Shimla
The word 'Shimla' originated from 'Shyamali Devi', a re-incarnation or descendant of the fearsome Goddess Kali. The
altar at Jakhoo Hill was initially shifted by the British to the place known as Kali Bari Temple at present. The hill station is
enveloped by seven hills that include Jakhoo Hill, Bantony Hill, Prospect Hill, Summer Hill, Observatory Hill, Invererarm
Hill and Elysium Hill.
The historic Hindustan Tibet Road was commissioned in 1850 commencing from Kalka to Shimla and thereafter to the
Chinese ruled territory, Tibet. In 1864, the town of Shimla was declared as the summer capital of the British Empire in
India. Another red-lettered event in the history of the town was when the foundation stone for the Kalka-Shimla railway
line was laid here in 1903.
Things to do in Shimla
The route from Kalka to Shimla on the narrow gauge is a major tourist attraction. The route, along with trees of fir, pine,
walnut, apricot and terraced paddy fields of corn and the famous capsicum, locally known as 'Shimla Mirch', runs
through 102 tunnels. The district of Shimla has numerous rivulets, small streams and springs and provides opportunities
for trekking, rock-climbing and ice-skating. Shimla holiday packages offer a chance to explore Shimla better.
The hill station is dotted with structures from the colonial era such as the Auckland House, Gaiety Theatre, Gorton
Castle, Peterhoff House and Viceregal Lodge. Famed for its Victorian architecture, most of the houses in the hill station
are built with timber (oak) wood in Gothic style.
Since ancient times, Shimla has maintained its retreating charm and became one of the major tourist spots in north
India. Tourists can participate in many activities in and around Shimla. Trekking in Shimla is a must. The ideal time for
trekking is between the months of March and August when Shimla is a little warm. The Manali Mountaineering Institute
conducts trekking tours in and around Shimla.
Food & Shopping in Shimla
For tourists not seeking any form of adventure, taking a leisurely walk on Mall Road to shop for local souvenirs, enjoying
some street food or watching a film at the Gaiety Theatre is recommended. Visit Indian Coffee House for some hot
coffee and snacks. Ashiana and Goofa, two restaurants run by the State tourism department, serve authentic Himachali
cuisine, which is worth a try. Shimla is also known as a haven for fresh fruits. Tourists can try some local fresh produce
like guava, strawberry and litchis.
Places like the Mall Road are great for shopping. State run shops like the Himachal Emporium on Mall Road offer local
handicrafts, Himachali shawls and woolens. Located near Mall Road is the Lakkar Bazaar, famous for selling locally
made wooden handicrafts and furniture.
Travelling to Shimla
The city is a popular holiday retreat during the summer season from April to August. However, it is also frequented in
the winter months of December and January, when the hill station is covered with snow. Shimla can be visited
throughout the year, as various activities can be enjoyed in different months.
Shimla can be reached by air, rail and by road. The Jubbarhatti Airport is 25 km away. Daily flights ply between Delhi
and Shimla. Kalka is 96 km from Shimla and is the nearest railhead connected to the hill station. It takes close to six
hours by train to reach Shimla from Kalka. Tourists can also travel to Shimla by road. The drive is scenic and the
National Highway from Delhi to Shimla is well maintained. Taxis and buses also ply on the route and it takes an eight-
hour drive to reach Shimla from Delhi.
Accommodation options in Shimla
Shimla is a popular hill station and is thronged by tourists during the peak season. It is advisable to book holidays in
advance. Hotel options in Shimla range from 5-star hotels, resorts to budget options like guesthouses, lodges and
budget hotels.

I don't know about Himachal and after that we go to Tara Devi Temple, its very beautiful. Lt is one of my best trip with my
friends and I enjoy a lot there. I would strongly recommend to everyone that once in a lifetime you should visit Shimla for
sure. I have been there for a week with my friends and I really like the greenery, views, climate is so good in the month
of November but if you are looking for some icy place to visit then you should go to Shimla in the month of January.
Locals people are so polite there and very helpful. Shimla is the beautiful place for tourism.
The things that kept me busy was scenery of valleys. I loved watching outside the travelling bus windows, I was lost in
mist and beauty of Shimla, it will be my all time favourite time spent with my friends. I would recommend everybody to go
once in Shimla and enjoy their life shopping on mall road." - Anil Kumar, New Delhi, 1 month ago
Awesome place & best of travel destination
"Just visit once you will be left with no words, which can explain the beauty of Shimla. That is highly Unpredictable,
because come on, we are talking about weather here. This year the last snowfall happened of 12th December. It was a
heavy one. There was no electricity around Manali for a whole day. But the day afterwards, the roads were cleared and
we were able to drive even up to Solang valley.
No matter how hard it snow, you will be able to drive at least up to Manali. It will not be very safe though, as the road
condition is not picture perfect. You have to be extremely slow and extremely careful, if it snows. Reference to the
question, the snowline usually starts after you cross Kullu, It is unlikely of Kullu to get snowfall in March.
Just a small tip regarding driving if it snows, be alert and keep it slow so that you can avoid using brakes as much as
possible. And since you had not driven in snow before, then, if it snows and if its dark, then it is advisable to pull up the
nearest hotel and wait for the roads to clear up. It does not snow during this time every year, But according to the
Locals, the snowfall is related to the full moon of Holi. They say that before the moon goes full, it can snow anytime. Well
it may be a dogma, but obviously its based on their experiences." - Nishant Singh, Ludhiana, 1 month ago
It was an amazing holiday trip in Shimla
"Shimla is a very good place and also it is known as Queen Of The Hills. As Shimla is located in H. P. Therefore it
becomes more special, its pleasant an cooling environment is soothing and refreshing & you would go there and settle
there. One should visit Tatapani, Kufri, Christ church Shimla and 108 feet statue of Hanuman Ji in Shimla.
Stairs, elevators, and steeply inclined side walks. That is how you get around as a pedestrian in Shimla. How does
furniture make it up? I saw several men carrying heavy loads including a guy with a refrigerator on his back. Every time I
saw one of these men, usually with his whole body and sometimes forehead too strapped to thing on his back (and
sometimes bent over double to carry it), I let him by. I almost took a photo of one of them, but even if he would not have
seen me, it seemed slightly rude, like I was treating his labour-intensive job as tourism. I settled for photographing the
Page 3/12
monkey momma along the same street instead.
The hotel looked nice from the outside. The interior decoration was lovely and tasteful. But I really wish it were in the
average Indian hotel's better interest to make the sheets and towels look really clean. There should not be any
ambiguity; I should not have to wonder if the towels and sheets have gotten washed (and not just folded neatly) after the
last guest. I mean, they weren't really dirty just not really sparkling white clean. The not-quite-fresh-looking state of the
sheets and towels has been consistent in every hotel in India I have been to (except the five-star in Jaipur whose sheets
and towels were pristine. ) I suspect they were just hand washed in cold water with weak detergent, no bleach, and dried
outside. That makes the most sense. But I hate wondering.
Shimla was a really cool place, both temperature and atmosphere. I can see why, according to my co-worker, all the
richer folk in Delhi escape here as soon as the summer heat hits. (Summer vacation for kids starts at the beginning of
May, apparently, so these places get even more crowded. ) It almost seemed there were as many hotels as houses.
Thus, Shimla is a very good place and one must visit Shimla in holidays." - Rahul Kumar, , 1 month ago
Shimla-Feel fresh & its best for shopping
"I would strongly recommend everyone that once in a lifetime do visit this place. This is heaven, for sure. I made my visit
in November 2015 and I really liked the greenery, the fresh air, views and the climate which is so good in the month of
November. But if you are looking for some ice, then the perfect time is the month of December. People who are fun
loving, love the mountains, enjoy the climate will surely like this destination.
Shimla is not a very big city so it'll be easy for you to visit every tourist place with plenty of time. The mall road and the
ridge are the main attractions. Mall road is the place for shopping. Shop Shop and Shop until you get tired with lots of
good food at the famous cafe Wake n Bake. In between of Mall road and the ridge, a visit to the famous church is must.
It gives you peace. At the ridge, the sightseeing and the ride on a horse will attract you the most. So many horses and
photographers around you. Be careful! Then you can have your lunch or dinner at the Goofa restaurant at the ridge
which is famous for its delicious food.
How to reach: Reach Kalka railway station(near Chandigarh) and then take the toy train or a taxi. Toy train is cheaper
but takes more time( around 6 hours)and taxi take around 4 hours.
Search of hotels? Not a big problem. There are plenty of hotels near mall road. You'll definitely find a shelter with good
service. The people are really polite and helpful." - Abhimanyu Mathur, Jaipur, 1 month ago
Funfilled and memorable trip to Shimla
"I have visited Shimla in January 2014. I have been on this trip with my friends. It was a very wonderful & fulfilled trip.
Few tips if you are planning your trip.
1) It is said the best time to visit Shimla is between March& September, but I would recommended & prefer to visit
during off season which is from December to February. This will help you to get cheap deals, less crowd & also you can
experience the snow fall if you are lucky.
2) When you plan a trip do not include meal in you plan instead ask you travel agent for EP plan which includes
breakfast & stay. This will help in lowering your budget & also you can experience local cuisine in dhabas.
3) Go for budgeted room for accommodation if you are planning your trip with friends. This will help in cost cutting.
These rooms are also decent & specious so you need not worry about.
4) If you still wanna go for good room's book a 2 or 3 star properties. Here you will get better rooms by just spending
from hundred of rupees. In Shimla we have visited mostly the known places like The Mall Road, Kullu & many other
places around. Speaking about The Mall Road, it's a good place to stroll around. It's a good place for shopping and
there are some very good place to eat & a beautiful church. While strolling around mall you come across buildings
which will give you feeling of colonial era.
Page 4/12
From all the corner of Shimla you can see a beautiful view of snow clad mountain with golden rays of sun. This is why
Shimla is known as the Queen of all hill stations. But this days Mall Road tends to get very crowded post 2pm till 9pm.
Best time to visit Mall road is from 5pm to 8pm. We had also visited Kullu which is sightseeing place a bit away from
Shimla. After a drive of around an hour you will reach Kullu but to reach the actual sightseeing place last few meters you
will have cover by horse ride which is very adventures.
From Kullu you can see the huge Himalayan range and will give you feeling like you are on the 7th heaven. Now guess
what, there are small stall which serves hot Maggi which are very tasty. It's a perfect Maggie moment. All in all it was
very fun filled, memorable & adventurous trip. Recommended for family & friends. If you plan a budget trip well in
advance you can get a good deal at a cheap cost during off-season which would be somewhere around 5k per person
(Exclusive of Meal Plan).

Best Season / Best Time to Visit Shimla
Page 11/12
JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC
A popular hill-station of the country’s north, Shimla experiences a typical hill-station climate with chilly winter and
moderately warm summer. Located at an altitude of 2202 meters above sea-level, Shimla has a subtropical highland
climate, and the temperature ranges from 3.95o Celsius during the winter to 32.95o Celsius in the summer.
Summer, which is considered to be the most comfortable time in Shimla, starts around end of March and continues till
June. The weather during summer remains quite pleasant here and one often requires light woolens, especially during
the evenings. The average temperature during this season is 14o Celsius to 20o Celsius, and it can vary between a
maximum temperature of 28o Celsius to a minimum of 14o Celsius.
The monsoons arrive in Shimla between July and September, and it receives an average rainfall of 1660 mm. In the
monsoons the weather is cool and temperatures fall, with the average temperature varying between 3o Celsius to 20o
Celsius. Humidity during this time increases as it can rain continuously for some days.
Winters in Shimla are cold. The season stretches through November to February, with the minimum temperature
touching -7o Celsius and the maximum never crossing 10o Celsius. The cold winds that blow from the Himalayas on the
north add to the chill, and the town experiences its share of snowfall during the end of December and early January.
Ideally, the best season to visit Shimla is from April to mid-July and from mid-September to October. During this time the
weather remains sunny and clear, and the temperatures comfortable for tourists to explore the scenic town and go on
treks. Although summer in Shimla is the most comfortable and enjoys the highest influx of tourists looking to escape the
scorching heat of the plains, even winter welcomes its share of visitors who come to Shimla to witness the snow. During
this time, winter sports ice-skating are major attractions for tourists.
