An Action Research on Classroom Teaching in English Medium

Introduction

The use of English medium is initially associated with the expansion of English

from its homeland, England, and the lowlands of Scotland and its spread to the rest of

Great Britain and Ireland. The expanded influence of the United States since the World

War II has facilitated the global spread of English. As a result, many countries have

schools that use English medium. The spread of English also resulted in becoming the

global language or lingua franca, more than 350 million people around the world speak

English as their first language and more than 430 million uses it as a second language.

English-medium education system is one that uses the English language as a

medium of instruction. The medium of instruction is the language used by the teachers

in teaching. Teaching in English medium increases the confidence of the students in

using the language making them comfortable with it. The use of English as a medium

of instruction enables them to enhance their speaking and writing abilities as well as

their communication skills in the said language.

Teaching in English medium is useful for the students because it will help build

their confidence in using the English language and be able to speak the language with

comfort. Being able to communicate using a second language can help make the

students to be internationally competitive since English is the language that the world

speaks. The students will not be worried about the language barrier if they want to work

abroad because the use of English medium in teaching molded them to be a better

speaker of the English language.
