Goals for This Session

✓ STEAM Introduction

✓ Universal design for learning

✓ Road-map for STEAM

STEAM

STEAM is NOT a subject. It is an approach.

STEAM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for the students.

Teachers can foster critical thinking through problem solving in elementary

STEM education.
Difference between STEM and STEAM

The main difference between STEM and STEAM is STEM explicitly focuses on
scientific concepts. STEAM investigates the same concepts, but does this through
inquiry and problem-based learning methods used in the creative process.
Difference between STEAM and Robotics

Robotics in STEAM Education.

Robotic technology is inherently hands-on, a more visceral and encompassing

way to learn that specifically aligns with a child's natural tendencies to feel, hear,
see, and experience their curiosities.
In your own words, what is
Universal Design for Learning?

Science Technology Engineering Arts Math

STEAM Education
Emphasizes 21st-Century Skills

--Critical thinking and problem solving

--Communication

--Collaboration

--Creativity and innovation

Highly rigorous and relevant learning

Science
Systematically builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable
explanations and predictions about the universe

Scientific Inquiry Process

Technology
▪Any modification of the natural world made to fulfill human needs/desires

▪A tool such as:

--Discovery Education
--KidBiz
--Edmodo
--Storybird
Discovery Education STEAM Connect
KidBiz
Engineering
A systematic approach to designing objects, processes, and systems to meet
human needs and wants

Engineering Design Process

Arts

A creative approach to design objects using raw material.

Mathematics
The study of length, numbers, quantity, space, structure, and change

Common Core State Standards

Math Practices

Math activities during class projects

STEAM in the Classroom
• Work smarter, not harder

• Integrated

• Project-based

• Hands-on

• Collaborative

• Problem-Solving

• Authentic and “Real World”

STEAM Planning
Reflect Inquire
What did you learn? What did your What is your starting point?
students learn?

Act Plan
What will you do? How do the UDL support your design?
Goals

✓ What will learners know?

✓ What will learners be able to do?

✓ What is essential for them to know?

Let’s Begin with Why
Give Your Learners Lots of M&Ms
✓ Make it meaningful

✓ Make it memorable

✓ Make it matter
Content vs. Method Goals

Content goals ask students to:

• Describe, explain, analyze, summarize,

identify, give examples, discuss, compare
and contrast

Method goals ask students to:

• Create, perform, use, demonstrate

Materials

• Can everyone perceive them?

• Can everyone interact with them?

• Can everyone learn from and with them?

Robotics Kits

• LEGO Mind Storm

• RoboRobo Kits

• Electronics kits

Methods

• How will learners engage with the lesson?

• How is information presented to learners?

• How do learners express themselves and act strategically?

How to Engage?

• Start with question

• Introduce the why

• Create culminating task

• More Maker Activities

Assessment

Students will be assessed on their lab performance and final year project.
