L As Christians from separated communities, we gather here to pray for unity. This year, the theme of the Week of Prayer
for Christian Unity chosen by the churches in Indonesia is “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue.” This theme is
imperative due to the recurring situations that bring divisions and conflicts. As we pray together, we are reminded that
our calling as members of the body of Christ is to pursue and embody justice. Our unity in Christ empowers us to take
part in the wider struggle for justice and to promote the dignity of life.

L Beloved sisters and brothers, let us confess before the Lord that we have sinned
and ask for forgiveness so that our worship will be pleasing to God. (Those who are able, may kneel.)

Compassionate God, you have chosen us to shepherd your flock. Jesus, your Son, taught us to act justly. We are
aware that in our ministry, we sometimes behave unjustly towards the people whom you have entrusted to us by:
prioritizing those who are close to us or those who have higher social status; ignoring strangers, the poor and the
least in society; fearing to defend the oppressed; misusing church resources. These deeds have caused some
people to turn away from your church. Lord, have mercy.

Loving God, you have gathered us as members of your flock. Jesus, your Son, taught us to love one another as a
sign of being his disciples. We confess that we have failed to live the commandment of love by: regarding those of
other churches as rivals; being hostile to each other and slow to forgive; focusing only on our personal interest;
ignoring the needs of sisters and brothers; excluding those who do not share our point of view. In these ways, our
attitudes strengthen the dividing walls between us. Lord, have mercy.

Gracious God, You have commissioned us to make our common home a place of justice for all. In your
generous love, you send rain on the righteous and the unrighteous and, in Jesus, teach us to love without

spreading falsehoods through various social media; participating in the disruption of social harmony. Our
conduct risks making the world a barren field that no longer brings forth your justice for all of creation.

Proclamation of the Word of God

First Reading
R The First Reading is taken from the Book of the Prophet Amos Chapter 8 beginning at verses 4 to 8.
Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, “When will the new moon be
over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and
the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals,
and selling the sweepings of the wheat.” The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their
deeds. Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise like the Nile,
and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?
You shall appoint judges and officials throughout your tribes, in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, and
they shall render just decisions for the people. You must not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must
not accept bribes, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right. Justice, and
only justice, you shall pursue, so that you may live and occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think,
but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we
have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and
individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in
proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity;
the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

Prayer

L God our Creator, forgive our lust for power and free us from the temptation to oppress others.
By your Holy Spirit of communion, help us to live in solidarity with our neighbor, and so share together
with your Son Jesus in fulfilling your promise of freedom from poverty and oppression. We pray in Christ’s name. Amen.

The Nicene Creed

WE BELIEVE in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

R We pray for those who live in the midst of injustice especially the Lumads of Mindanao, the indigenous peoples across
the country, the laborers, the transport workers, the fisher folks and farmers, the victims and families of Extra-Judicial
Killings, the students who are caught up with the commercialization of education, the overseas Filipino workers whose
lives are at risk but pursued to work abroad for the lack of opportunities here in the country, the women and children
held captive by modern day slavery and human trafficking and those who live below the poverty line. Encourage us to
lift up their voices and strengthen their hope. We pray for those who continue to perpetuate injustice. May your kindness
fill our hearts and make us agents of freedom and peace. We pray for every institution and person who stands for justice
that they may be more strengthened to serve despite the threats and the rising trend of vilification for human rights
workers and church workers who are bringing the “Good News to the Poor.” Help us to act justly according to your
words. Today we ask you:
C O God, hear our prayer and grant us your justice.

L We pray for the Roman Catholic Church under the leadership of Pope Francis, Bishop Julito Cortes of the Diocese of
Dumaguete and for the priests, deacons, seminarians, church workers and renewal movements, that they may strive hard
to proclaim the Good News to all despite the hate and violence afforded to them in today’s society. May they continually
serve God and people through their various ministries. We ask you to guide them with your Holy Spirit, that they may be
steadfastly proclaim the day of Your favor in our present society filled with violence and turmoil. Today we ask you:

L We pray for the United Church of Christ in the Philippines under the leadership of its current General Secretary Bishop

Christian Churches worldwide. We pray for the visible unity of the Church. Lead us to fulfill Jesus’ prayer that we may be
