I. General Information
Title: SCHOOL BASED IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION
Target Client: GRADES 1 AND 7 LEARNERS
Date: AUGUST 6-23, 2018
Location: ALL ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF THE MUNICIPALITY

II. Background and Rationale

School-based immunization is a strategy for reaching older children and adolescents

with vaccination services. With the availability of newer vaccines (e.g. human papillomavirus
(HPV)) and greater attention to providing booster doses of routine vaccines to older children
(e.g. TD vaccine), there is a growing interest in using schools as a platform for immunization.
With increases in school enrolment rates, particularly in low income countries, the school
immunization strategy has become even more promising.

The Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Education (DepEd) have
implemented the School-Based Immunization Program as the government’s effort in the
morbidity and mortality of school-aged children due to vaccine-related preventable
diseases.

The School-Based Immunization Program is implemented through the provision of

Measles-Rubella (MR) and Tetanus Diptheria (Td) vaccines to all Grade 1 and Grade 7
learners nationwide. The vaccines are provided for free and the vaccination will be
conducted every August as a routine activity of the Program. As such, issuance of yearly
memorandum is not necessary unless there are changes in the implementation of the
Program.

The guidelines in implementing the school based immunization are in accordance to

Department Memorandum No. 2015-0238.

III. Target Coverage

All Grade I and Grade VII students with parental consent shall be vaccinated with
Measles-Rubella (MR) Vaccine and Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine.

IV. Vaccination Team Composition

SBI Vaccination strategy is composed of a nine (9) two-person team, together with
the MHO and PHN’s (Nurse I & II).
