7. Whether proposed project is for a Product or Process? : The proposed

project is a Product.

8. Details of the proposed project:

i) Background of the Project :

The most predominant crisis faced by our country is water scarcity.

Though, out of the 75%, 4% of the global water resources are in India.
Due to the increasing demand for freshwater, a depletion in the level of
ground water seen.
A drastic rise in temperature due to global warming results in an
inflation of sea water level. Thus desalination of seawater becomes a
solution for meeting the demand for freshwater without affecting marine
ecosystem. By using natural products for removing different salts
present in sea water, we were able to purify water and hence use a cost
effective and environment friendly method for desalination.

ii) Summary of the Project :

The conventionally used method, reverse osmosis is expensive

and thus not adopted globally. Thus we took on a cheap and efficient
method of desalination using natural products. By adopting the design
techniques from sump filter, we have modified it for desalination process.
This process totally happens in two compartments, one for filtration and
absorption purpose and the other for storage. The filtration and
adsorption compartment has 8 chambers and 7 layer in which filtration
through adsorption happens and comes to the next chamber through filter
mesh and thus enters into the UV light source and is then stored in the
second compartment.

iii) Objectives of the Project : To cater the needs of freshwater

availability for common man from sea water.

iv) Methodology of project :

We have modified the design technique of sump filter and

created a new system for desalination of seawater. Here we have
analyzed the salts present in seawater and used natural products for
filtration of each salts. The system consists of two stages, one flirtation,
adsorption and UV treatment and second is storage. Each chamber is
separated by a layer of filter mesh at the separation at the bottom of alternate chambers. In
the filtration by adsorption stage, water collected is passed through 8
chambers and is further led to the second phase of UV treatment and the
final desalined water is stored in the container below.

Water collected from sea is passed through the first

chamber containing river sand which can be used in reducing the
chlorine content. Water seeps through the space at the bottom of first
chamber and passes to the second chamber. The second chamber
comprises of bamboo which is used to remove sodium in water and this
bamboo when dried and processed produces bamboo salt which is used in many
countries. Coconut shells are fragmented and are placed in the third
chamber to remove halogens, sodium chloride, calcium fluoride etc. In
the fourth chamber, coir fibers are placed for filtering bulk suspended
solids from water. From this, water flows to the next chamber containing
dried neem leaves. Neem leaves help in clearing away the toxic elements
and are also effective in antibacterial activity. Activated charcoal
eliminates organic compounds thus forming the sixth chamber of the
filter. The seventh chamber has a layer of porous stone at the bottom for
another step filteration as it clears all the fine solids and even small
bacterias. The eigth chamber being the last collects water and transfers it to the
inlet of the UV kit where further purification takes place. Here the purified water is
surrounded around a UV light and therby removing bacteria etc. The
further filtered water is passed to a storage tank from where this water
can be used efficiently for various purposes.

v) Drawbacks in the existing products/ process/ technology:

 Consumes a large amount of energy.

 Costly
 Harmful for the environment.
 Osmotic pressure required is high at membranes.
 Lot of land required for the process.
 Waste disposal is a major concern.

vi) Advantages over the existing products/ process/technology:

 Cost effective.
 Less wastge of energy.
 Easily available natural products.
 Maintenance cost is low.

vii) Features of the Project :

The whole product has 2 parts the filtration ,

adsorption part and the storage part. The whole system is made of
acrylic glass. The adopted design of the system is inspired from the
sump filter. The whole filter dimensions will account to 50x50x80 cm.
And each chamber of the filter has a spacing of 10cm between each
other and a layer of filter mesh is given at the bottom of alternate chambers. The flow
of water is in a zig-zag manner through the filter. Each chamber is filled
with the respective filtration and adsorption medium in the required
amount. The water will flow through each chamber and end up in the
last chamber which directs the water into a UV light source. From the
outlet of the UV light source the water is taken to the second part of the
system, the storage part. The storage tank also has the similar
dimensions of that of the filtration tank, 50x50x80cm. There will be an
outlet from the storage tank to take out the desalined water.

viii) Expected social relevance/ benefit of the project: Fresh drinking

water availability is made easier for coastal residents.

ix) Duration of the Project : 4 months

ix) Work Plan :

Stage 1: literature work - We have gone through a numerous journals to

fix the materials to be used in different section.

Stage 2: Materials required- Fixing all the materials for each section and the
duration of each material before maintenance.

Stage 3: Material collection – Here all to be kept in the chamber are

collected and are dried if any.

Stage 4: Experimental setup– In this the filtration compartment is made of

acrylic glass which takes about 2 days, parallelly the storage
compartment is made of steel. Then these compartments are fixed
together and provided with UV light sorce which takes around 3 days.

Stage 5: Placing of materials – Each chambers are filled with respective

material.
