CHAPTER 1

Introduction

As time passes by, mobile games continues to expand. Many teenager becoming addicted.

Mobile games are one of the recreation activity of young people. In the modern age, mobile

games have become a part of every teenager’s life.

Mobile gaming is one of the widely used leisure activities by many people. Teenagers who

are playing these Mobile games said that they are playing these games just for fun, to keep

away from the heat of the sun, without knowing that there a lot of effects of playing these

games that are more than what they think. The study only focuses on online games and its

relation to the academic performance of the selected student. However, the study excludes

the effects of online games to their behavior

According to Reddit (2015), some of them you don’t need to listen to. Other ones, like

when they put together lists of great mobile games, are worth clicking through. If you do,

you’ll probably find yourself a few new distractions. And really, some of the suggestions

are so good, you’ll realize mobile gaming got serious when you weren’t looking. We

combed through the suggestions to find the best mobile games according to Reddit.

According to a Deloitte (2014) report, mobile games represent one of the fastest growing

sectors of the mobile application industry in Europe. Europeans have adopted mobile

games, which have become the most downloaded applications (“apps”) on smartphones.

Similarly, a study conducted by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA, 2015)

stated gaming has partly shifted from being console and PC-based to being multiplatform

and cross-platform (i.e., video games with an online component allowing gamers to use
different hardware). The latter can include addiction-like symptoms (Billieux,

2012, Billieux, Maurage, Lopez-Fernandez, Kuss, & Griffiths, 2015; Kanjo, Kuss, & Ang,

2017), which can include core components of addiction, including cognitive salience, loss

of control, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse (Griffiths,

1995, 2005) as well as associated psychological and/or behavioral consequences

(e.g., compulsion, negative consequences, and functional impairment; Lee et al., 2016; Liu

et al., 2016). PMPU is a multifaceted condition requiring further research into users’

smartphone activities, including mobile games, as these may contribute to experiencing

problems and addiction-like symptoms (Griffiths & Szabo, 2014), highlighting another gap

in knowledge that this study aims to address.

playing video games and the number is increasing because of the fast growing portable

devices, e.g., Android-powered and iOS devices, and social networking websites, e.g.,

Facebook1,2 (Liu et al. 2013)

The academic performance and cognitive consequences of playing video games have been

an ongoing debate in both the educational environment and the public. While it is still

arguable whether playing video games actually affects students’ academic performance,

recent studies of many educators have considered digital games as an educational tool to

foster students’ learning.

As a researcher, the main objective of this study is to know the factors of

addiction in Mobile Game and to know the impact or effects of Mobile game.
Background Of The Study

Many researchers said that the mobile games can offer players a much-needed

escape from the daily grind involving work, family, education, and other important life

responsibilities. When enjoyed in moderation, video games offer great entertainment, can

improve cognitive skills and hand-eye coordination, and can even help you relax and wind

down after a busy day. The U.S. spends more than $30 Billion per year on purchases related

to video games, which are now more accessible than ever thanks to mobile devices. Anyone

with a smartphone or tablet can instantly lose themselves in a fun game of Candy Crush,

Clash of Clans, or Pokemon Go regardless of time or place.

Gaming applications have become one of the main entertainment features on

smartphones, and this could be potentially problematic in terms of dangerous, prohibited,

and dependent use among a minority of individuals. A cross-national study was conducted

in Belgium and Finland. The aim was to examine the relationship between gaming on

smartphones and self-perceived problematic smartphone use via an online survey to

ascertain potential predictors.

Game is one of the most greatets technology industry right now. Developer can get so many

advantages, for example Destiny. Destiny has already smashed analysts' expectations for

first-week sales with a $500 million launch. From this, we can conclude that game industry

is on of the greatest industry. But now, gaming could make parents worry about their child.

Game addiction certainly is a bad addict. This condition make anxious for some side.

It’s important to be investigated to know why are mobile games addictive,

howcommon is mobile game addiction in children, what are the effect, so we can keep

off or treat this problem well.


Statement of the Problem

This research is focuses on the factors of addiction in mobile games of the G12 ICT

students in St. Augustine School of Nursing Lucena City Campus

This study attempt to answers the following questions:

1. What are the factors of addiction in mobile games?

2. What are the effects of mobile games in physical and academic performance of the

students?

2.1 Positive effects

2.2 Negative effects

3. What output can be made based from the finding of the study?

Significance of the Study

The significance of the study is to find out the factors of addiction in mobile games

and its impact to the the ICT student of St. Augustine. The factors that needs to answer

some questions why mobile games is so addicted for teenagers and what is the benefits of

mobile games to teenagers.

Specially it is significant itself. To the Students, This research will be significant

and will benefit the students, since this research is conducted for finding the factors of

mobile games addiction

To the teachers, this research is also benefit the teachers it will give idea to them.

Why their students is addicted in mobile games.

To the future researchers, this study will be significant to other researchers who

would study more about this.If they are interested to knowing about the factors why many
teenager is addicted in mobile games and this study will help them to bring up more idea

about mobile games.

Scope and Limitation

This research will get participant to from the Grade 12 ICT strands of St. Augustine

School of Nursing Lucena City, we will only get half of the population per section with the

purpose of knowing the factors of addiction in mobile games

Definition of Terms

The following terms used in the study are defined for clarity and understanding:

Mobile Games -Mobile games are games designed for mobile devices, such as

smartphones, feature phones, pocket PCs, personal digital assistants (PDA), tablet

PCs and portable media players. Mobile games range from basic (like Snake on

older Nokia phones) to sophisticated (3D and augmented reality games).Today’s

mobile phones - particularly smartphones - have a wide range of connectivity

features, including infrared, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. These technologies

facilitate wireless multiplayer games with two or more players.

Mobile Gamer - A person who plays games especially: a person who regularly plays

computer or mobile games.

Mobile Phone- A mobile phone is a wireless handheld device that allows users to make

And receive calls and to send text messages, among other features. The earliest

generation of mobile phones could only make and receive calls. Today’s mobile

phones, however, are packed with many additional features, such as web browsers,
games, cameras, video players and even navigational systems. A mobile phone may

also be known as a cellular phone or simply a cell phone.
