PREFACE
MUSIC, DANCE, POETRY
There are only few poets who publish their work
according to an aesthetic program which he works out in
keeping with topics or promotional stages a.s.o. Mr. Nicu
Doftoreanu ranges among those who do not act according to
their free will of inspiration or of chance, no, he organizes
„like an engineer” the poetical matter in books which are
more or less subordinate to the topic of tangos, but having
each of them in their title the name of the famous
Argentinean dance. From this point of view, the author
creates a personal mark for himself, standing definitely out in
today’s poetical world.
Ever since his debut in 2002, Nicu Doftoreanu has
published 12 volumes of poetry, approaching under the
„umbrella” of tangos, a large range of feelings, positions and
opinions about society. He chose the tango, because it
expresses in the highest and most sensitive degree, the
connection with poetry, through its rhythm, warmth, passion
and intensiveness. Coming from Argentina, spreading
everywhere in the world and enjoying a fantastic popularity,
the tango is being sung and danced, by creating an extremely
significant communication with the partner, with all people
around. Comforting one’s soul, who has not been humming
„Adios muchachos”, „La Media Luz”, „La Cumparsita”, and
maybe among them was Nicu Doftoreanu as well, who
extended their charm in his books, telling us that those who
love music and dance, love life.

Noul volum, Tangouri potrivite... în stil englezesc / Fitting
Tangos... in English Style (în ediţie bilingvă, româno-engleză,
traversare a provocărilor inerente.
dimensiunea profund umană a unor reflecţii general
valabile:
a cărui trecere conştientizează tragismul existenţei:
8
His new volume Fitting Tangos… in English Style (a
bilingual Romanian-English edition in order to enhance the
distribution rea) is both resembling and not resembling his
earlier work, although he is still consistent as to the „dance”
between rhymes, ideas and messages. Preceded by mottos
and accompanied by a few suggestive drawings, the poems
are quite clearly addressed to certain persons, and it is
expected that they would arise a certain effect.
They are love poems, poems about nature, about feelings
that „are flourishing, gritting or missing”, about aspects and
elements of every day life, about human qualities and
weakness, developing one’s own philosophy to overcome
inherent challenges. The simplicity of certain rhymes is
sometimes deceiving, because impressed by the almost
folkloric euphonia, we might overlook the deeply human
dimension of certain generally valid considerations: Meaning
„We shall forget how to live / If we keep away from life.”
Sometimes the author resorts to traditional sayings such as
„joking to cover up one’s anxiety” seemingly detached with a
hidden smile:
„In order not to suffer at all, I suggest we’d adopt a different
goal.”
With an ironic-ludic approach, everything seems easier,
more bearable, as he suggests in „Tango about Hardening
one’s Thought”:
„When I remain all alone / I think only well of me.”
The favourit love topic is approached with delicacy, with
evanescent metaphors:
„When I tidied up in myself / I found a little of yourself!“
Since the tango has in it something sublime and fatal, it could
not overlook the childhood („The Tango of Childhood”) nor the
9
„Daţi-mi TIMP! / Daţi-mi TIMP să mă bucur, / Să merg acolo
unde/…

old age („The Tango of Old Age”), most important stages of life
under the domination of time, whose passing makes the tragical
aspect of our existence more obvious:
„Give me TIME! / Give me TIME to rejoice, / To go there
where /… Nothing is perfect, / Because everything is just born /
passing from one world to another.”
Without moralizing, the author lucidly perceives not just
the physical degradation, brought about by the passing
years, but also the moral one both at the personal as well as
at the social level:
„When you are old… you turn into an object, / Even though
you have three hearts in your chest!”
These lyrical tangos by Nicolae Doftoreanu are in fact
pretenses, conventions. The one who looks over the
shoulder of his or her partner can not ignore the dramatic
character of reality in which he dances „The Tango of the
Coming Crises”, with an echo from Radu Gyr:
„Announces of so many crises / Ever since we gave up visas.”
But Nicu Doftoreanu knows how to inspire optimism,
confidence and courage:
„When you feel all crushed by life/ Don’t stay passive! / Come
up front!/ And don’t give up!/ Make a protest!”
Obviously, under certain circumstances, dancing too,
might become a way of protesting.
But the poet does it in his own way.
Just as the tango is being performed in pairs, in this
instance, the author invites his readers to an imaginary
dance, among pages written with an open soul.

TANGOU ANTI… EU
Motto:
Doamne, dacă-mi eşti prieten,
Cum te lauzi la toţi sfinţii,
Dă-i în scris poruncă morţii
Să-mi ia calul, nu părinţii.
Doamne, dacă-mi eşti prieten - POPESCU Spiridon, 1952,
publicat în revista „Ramuri” în Decembrie, 1982
DOAMNE!
Dacă mă iubești,
Vreau să nu mă pedepsești,
Doar să mă ferești...
de mine,
Când nu vreau să fac un bine
Și să nu mă ispitești
Cu lucrările popești
Ce-s interpretări lumești!
DOAMNE!
Dacă mă iubești,
Vreau să mă lovești...
mai mult
Când fac răul absolut
Și de tine nu ascult
Luându-mi și acel minut,
Așa cum ai mai făcut
Cu Adam...
Atunci, demult!

ANTI… ME TANGO
Motto:
Oh, Lord, if you’re my friend
As you boast to all the saints,
Give a written order to death
To take my horse, not my parents.
Lord, if you’re my friend – Spiridon POPESCU, 1952
Published in the „Ramuri” magazine in December, 1982
OH, LORD!
If you love me,
I want you not to punish me,
But just to protect me…
From myself
When I don’t want to do the best
And don’t tempt me at all
With priestly things… so small
Interpreted by a worldly call!
OH, LORD!
If you love me,
I want you to punish me…
even more
When I do the utmost evil
And don’t obey your orders
Taking that minute away
As you did already
With Adam…
At times of yore!

DOAMNE!
Dacă mă iubești
Vreau să întărești consemnul
Ce dă gândului îndemnul
De a mă ascunde-n mine...
Când fac rău,
nu când fac bine,
Dar să îmi lași liber zborul
Ce-a dat vieții-n dar fiorul,
Până când întreg pământul
Îmi va înghiți... avântul!

OH, LORD!
If you love me
I want you to strengthen the order
Which lends thoughts to the urge
To hide into my inner self…
When I do wrong,
Not when I do good,
But let my flight free
That gave the thrill of wellness,
Until the whole world
Will swallow my… soaring.

Timpul
n-are… TIMP de noi
să ne-ntrebe de nevoi,
Ne atinge când ne stinge
şi ne duce-n infinit,
Sau de unde am venit,
cu un dor de-ndeplinit.
Şi chiar de îi spui mişcare
de fapt totu-i… degradare
Timpul nu-i de împrumut!
Pentru cel ce stă-n trecut,
S-a dus!
Gata!
S-a pierdut!
Timpul nu arată milă!

Time
Has no TIME for us
To ask us what we need,
It touches us; when it takes us
To the far away infinity,
Or where from we appeared,
With a dream to be fulfilled.
Even if you tell it „move”
It’s degradation is for sure.
Time is not to be borrowed!
For those who in the past are anchored,
It’s gone!
For good!
Lost it got!
Time shows never any pity!

Dar umbra,
Aruncată din pragul zorilor,
Căzuse deja spartă
Pe mozaicul de tristețe al gândului.
Și-atunci,
Acolo…
La marginea Pământului,
Am văzut cum
FIICA VÂNTULUI...
Îngenunchiată-n fața ei
Culegea pulberea cerului care-i acoperea ochii.

Daţi-mi tropotul cailor

… şi vă voi mulţumi!
Daţi-mi clătinarea florilor

… şi vă voi mulţumi!
Daţi-mi spuma valurilor,
Strecurată printre cioburile curate ale stâncilor,
Să-mi albesc visele
… şi vă voi mulţumi!
Daţi-mi!

TANGO OF CHILDHOOD
Give me!
Give me the horses trampling
On the crest of early morning
… and I will thank you!
Give me the bending of flowers
Behind the steps of the winds
… and I will send you thanks!
Give me the foamy waves
Sieved through the clean pieces of rocks
To whiten my dreams
… and here are my thanks
Give me!
Give me TIME!
Give me TIME to see how anxiety
Will change into roaming forms
To see the moment when the entire horizon
Tries a rebirth,
Now, That much I see of it,
Just patched with feelings.
Give me!
Give me TIME!
Give me TIME to enjoy,
Going there, where
… Nothing is perfect,

TANGOU MIMAT
Motto:
Toţi suntem pictorii clipei/
Treziţi dintr-un vis de-nviere
Toţi (87) – Vol. Fără Semne de Ioan Raţiu
Colecţia Poeţii Secolului XXI, Editura Ispirescu, 2015
Adevăratul sentiment...
Redă plăceri necunoscute,
Arome fine ne-ntrecute, …
Ca-n visul primului sărut
Avut în vremuri de demult!
Cu gânduri care-au… dispărut
Fiind azi de nerecunoscut!

MÂNGÂIE-MĂ te rog,
Aşa, ... cuminte,
Cum se mângâie ei
când nu ştiu a sorbi...
Şi voi lăsa... părinte
lumina uitatelor priviri,
Iubiri
... ascunse sub cuvinte.
PRIVEŞTE-MĂ, te rog,
Aşa, ... cu dor,
Precum privesc copiii
La strălucirile promise-n viitor,
Ameţitoare vise de vitrină:
PĂPUŞI,
SPERANŢE,
JUCĂRII,
DORINŢE!
DOREŞTE-MĂ, te rog,
Aşa, … din suflet!

Să nu fiu obligat să-ţi spun iar:
PLEACĂ!
PLEACĂ!
Nu mă strica prea iute!
Din nimic...
se strică jucăria copilului prea mic!
AŞTEAPTĂ-MĂ, te rog,
Aşa, ... curat
Şi-ajută-mă să regăsesc iar locul ce cunoaşte
Norocul suspendat în timp,
În care răsuflarea ta renaşte... din cenuşă
Amestecînd infernul cu sublim...
Şi dând culoare...
DOAMNE CE CULOARE!
Legendelor la margine de floare,
Când… MURIM!

HAI!…
Vino să te mângâi,
Aşa cum nimeni în această lume
N-a reuşit s-o facă
spre-a-ţi cere să-i rămâi!
Şi, … de va fi să-ţi placă,
O!... de va fi să-ţi placă
Să nu-mi promiţi nimic,
Să nu cumva să-ţi treacă,
Aşa cum e… propune-ţi
să se petreacă totul
Pe margini de dorinţi:
Acolo nu încape decât ceea ce simţi!
HAI!...
Vino mai aproape!
Să simt înfiorarea
Ce s-o-ntâmpla să-i scape
Sărutului dintâi!
Să îţi adulmec visul,
Eliberat de-aroma
dorinţei regăsite.
HAI!...
Vino şi încearcã

Motto:
Întrebat-am vântul, zburătorul, / Bidiviu pe care-aleargă norul
Către-albastre margini de pământ:

Nichifor Crainic (1889-1972)
Ai văzut nefericirea
Cum mai bântuie privirea
Celor ce-au pierdut iubirea?!
Ai gustat din cupa vieţii
Când amarul bătrâneţii
Umplea golul tinereţii?!
Ai simţit miros de dor
Aromat înţepător,
Cu dragostea de moment
Ce încercă-n mod frecvent
Fără niciun sentiment?!
Ai auzit cum dispare
Liniştea firii ca stare
Când din… URNA FERICIRII

TANGOU SENSIBIL
Motto:
Să nu faci nimic e tare greu
Nu ştii când ai terminat
Leslie Nielsen (1926-2010)
Cu fiecare zi ce trece,
Se face-n suflet tot mai rece,
Chiar dacă-n fiecare noapte
Încă aud iubiri în şoapte,
Căci fiecare zi pierdută,
E o poveste petrecută,
Care şi-a măcinat substanţa
Diminuându-şi importanţa.
Speranţa-mi pare-atunci trecută,
Cu riduri… palidă… urâtă!
Cu fiecare zi ce vine,
Numai nimicul mă reţine
Să plec departe spre alt dor,
Uitând mereu că-s muritor!
Şi chiar de-n fiecare noapte
Iubirea încă-mi toarnă şoapte
Făcându-mă să mă simt bine,
Însă voinţa… nu-mi revine!
Ea a plecat cândva departe
Să îmi aducă alte şoapte,

CRITICAL REFERENCE
With his new book ,,Lively Tangos for children... and not
just them”, Nicu Doftoreanu demonstrates that he is able to
expand the literary sphere of his creation also towards the
children’s soul. His lyrical tangos succeed in conveying
rhythm to the paces of rhymes dedicated to grandparents,
nephews, children and even teachers.
The volume we are talking about, has enjoyed quite
commendable appreciations after it got to reach the readers.
I was overjoyed by the news and I assure the author that
the crevice which he came through to write children’s
literature allowed him to assert himself in this area as well,
using his „tango” style in steps of poetry, another
praiseworthy step.

subiectelor abordate: Tangouri, Tangoul, mereu tangoul, Sub
semnul tangoului, Tangouri altfel, Tangoul mereu tânăr,
Tangouri de ieri, tangouri de azi, În ritm de tangou, Tangouri
sub…acoperire, Tangouri dintodeauna, Un tangou numit dorinţă,

of the Branch of literature for children and youngsters of the

the discovery and promotion of talented writers, a National

Reader Appraises the Poet” in 1998 through the

Doftoreanu was also one of the participants, the one about
whom I am writing now with great pleasure and joy.
Ever since 1998, when he won not just the contest but also
the hearts of the readers, thus creating, by transfer of the
tango from the world of dancing to that of poetry – a brand
which he owns.
From the very first poetry volume in 2002 and until now
2018, he has continued to be under the sign of tangos.
Counting the one published this year about which I am now
writing and which is entitled ,,Lively Tangos about Children
and Not Just Them”, he has managed to edit the 12-th volume.
I shall mention them out of the need to always remember
them, due to their titles, the richness and variety of topics
approached: Tangos, The Tango Forever Young, Under the Sign of
Tangos, Tangos Otherwise, he Ever Young Tango, Tangos of
Yesterday, Tangos of Today, In Tango Rhythm, Undercover Tangos,
Tangos for Ever, A Tango Called Desire, Mordicus Tango, Lively
Tangos for Children and Not Just Them.
In his most recent volume „Lively Tangos for Children
and not Just Them” the writer Nicu Doftoreanu succeeds,
with a thorough sensibility, to make a quite special lyrical
excursion into the soul of children, as well as into childhood
as such, convincing his readers of all ages that nobody and
nothing can chase us to leave the marvelous universe of

childhood and that, as part of the experiences of a child’s
soul, accompanies us with their brightness, from the cradle
beyond our grave, in the kingdom of Heaven.
Being a good colleague and friend Nicu Doftoreanu also
shows concern for what they write, and he finds in their
work little gleams of light which he places as mottos of each
tango in this volume of tangos. You will discover them
when reading the book. Being a fine psychologist, the
author chooses these texts with great judgement, inviting us
in this way to meditation. I will give just one example, that
will be enough for an invitation to meditate about the
meaning of the other rhymes.
Motto: People forgive you if you commit crimes, but they do
not forgive you if you are happy (Constantin Noica 1909-1987)
Quite sensible, the engineer Nicu Doftoreanu gives up
man’s forgiveness and decides to be happy together with
,,the lively children” about whom he writes with a
thorough knowledge of their psychology, blendeded with a
similar feeling.
The poet views the child from his birth (Tango of the
Newborn, pag. 15) when… „Quite bald and toothless / it looks
out for parents! / He twitches hands and twitches feet / In despair
that the world is… deep / He even cries sometimes / Because he
wants sustainers / When you come close to him / He grabs you
quickly / Both the nose and then the hair / Everything in despair/
Angry that he is being swaddled / that he is not let free / But he is
fretting in vain / No success whatsoever / Because he is given
breast / Quieting him in a clever way/he faces a reality / In which
he no longer frets / He is sucking just a little / Becomes hale and
hearty / Almost happy / that he came into this world”.
155

COPIILOR / Vremea vitejiilor! / Cum să știe cei mai mici / de ce
suntem noi aici, / Construind de generații / momentul acestei
nații, / Când istoria-i diluată / Și predată deformată, / Omițând
perioadele / În care noroadele / Zadarnic au încercat... /
Dezmembrare-acestui stat?! / Dar azi totul s-a schimbat: /
TIMPUL, optimist cinstit, / Ce „lucreaz-acoperit”/ Ne-a propus
Care-i de nerefuzat. / Nu-i cale să o amâni: / Să redevenim
dorim și-azi cu-ardoare / Tot o... ROMÂNIE MARE / Și să serbăm
CENTENARUL / Înghițindu-ne amarul, / Că mai sunt, ... chiar
printre noi, ... / Trădătorii de eroi / Ce „lucreaz-acoperit”... / Așa
cum s-a dovedit!
Poetului Nicu Doftoreanu, autorul volumului „Tangouri
zglobii despre copii și nu numai”, Ed. Rawex Coms, 2018:
Tangourile-ți sunt zglobii / O să ți le adore picii / De vrei și tu
la fel să fii / Te-aruncă-n brațele mămicii //
156
Since we refer to children, the tangos are „frisky”, but they
might also be of the „bad tempered” when he is told by his
parents: „Stay here! We are leaving in a hurry… / Parents to
become again / We bring you a little one / For you not to be alone”.
The tangos are adequate to the topic chosen by the author
and they might refer to the „ways in life” or be
„revolutionary” (when he breaks up toys, the child discovers
elements of reality).
The tango might also be „innocent”, of „the little prince”,
„protective against the bugaboo”, of the „toy”, „soldierly”-for
discipline and order, „frolicsome”, „of the grandpa”„of
educating parents”, for „Saint Nicholas”- who brings gifts, of
the „8 year old „bragger” – when he begins to be conscious of
moral values, of „class 0” – preparing to become a school
pupil, for „Eminescu”, to „soothe one’s dreams”, „anti-
sadness”, „of a child”, of „old men” and „old women”, of
„babies”, of „seasons”, „cranky” – with a socio-political hue
having an educational purpose, of treason a.s.o.
The tango of this year’s historic event could not be missing,
the „Tango of the Centennial” which warns us courage, / How
will our small ones know/Why we live here and now / Building up for
generations / The momentum of this nation that there are: „Traitors
of our nation… and country, who bring shame upon us all / Hiding
from our CHILDREN / The time of / When history knows dilution /
being taught with distortions / Overlooking all those periods / In
which masses of people / Have tried in vain / To dismember this
state?! But all has changed today: TIME, optimistically honest /
which mostly works under cover / Has suggested us at last / Like a
„funny” legislator / A LAW with a big impact /… which you can’t
refuse / It is no way to postpone it / For us to again become
ROMANIANS!
157
158
Let us vote for this law / Showing those who do not get it / That
we arduously wish to again become GREATER ROMANIA and
to celebrate the CENTENNIAL / Swallowing the bitterness /
that there still are… among us / Hero traitors who work under
cover… / as it has been proven so far!”
And now some verses dedicated to Mr. Nicu Doftoreanu
at the launching of his book in the Mihail Sadoveanu library
of his volume of poetry „Lively Tangos about Children and
not just them”:
Your tangos are lively / The kids will adore them / If you want
to be alike / In mother’s arms you cuddle //
Oh, God, were you to punish him That he is lively at his age /
tell you bluntly you are wrong / In his second youth he is strong.

dragoste etc. Descoperim şi Tangou de educat... părinţii,
Tangou de bunic etc: „Dragi părinţi... / fiţi mai cuminţi / Şi nu
vă lăsaţi iubirea / Să vă dicteze menirea / Căci profitu-i aparent /
Încetaţi să-i răsfăţaţi!
companie. De asemenea tangouri dedicate jucăriilor şi
jocurilor etc. Tangoul meseriilor este educativ pentru copii,
stimulându-i în alegerea unei meserii atractive pentru viitor.
Avem şi un Tangou pentru Eminescu: „Când Eminescu se
năştea / LUCEAFĂRUL îl aştepta!/ Era acolo de demult, ... / Însă
doar el l-a cunoscut/ Şi l-a făcut nemuritor / Într-o poezie cu mult
dor”.
ardoare/ Tot o... / ROMÂNIE MARE / Şi să serbăm
CENTENARUL / Înghiţindu-ne amarul”. În final, Tangou
explicativ: „Toţi mai mulţi români greşesc / Gândind că ce-i
românesc / Nu e bun!... / Şi-aici...
162
After he makes an incursion into the life of the little ones, the
poet dedicates tangos to the important moments of the kid’s life,
the christening, the winter celebrations (Saint Nicholas,
Christmas), the first love a.s.o. We discover a Tango to
Educate… Parents, Tango of a Grandfather etc. „Dear
parents… / Be more dutiful / And don’t let your love/dictate your
mission / As the profit is apparent / And it is just for a moment / Don’t
accept their daintiness / when they are still in kindergarten! / Stop
spoiling them / They are not fully grown!”(Tango for educating…
parents) There also are tangos for educating kittens and
doggies, written also with an educational target, to arouse the
children’s love for domestic animals. There also are tangos
dedicated to toys and games etc. The Tango of Trades is
educational for children, by stimulating them to choose an
attractive trade for the future.
There also is a Tango for Eminescu: „When Eminescu was
born / The EVENING STAR was for him waiting/It has been there
long time ago / But only he recognized it / And made him immortal / In
a poem with great longing”.
The poet’s great patriotism made him write the Tango of the
Centennial: „Let’s show those who don’t understand / That today we
still fervently wish / Still a GREATER ROMANIA/And to celebrate
the CENTENNIAL / By swallowing all bitterness”. In the end comes
an Explanatory Tango: „Ever more Romanians are wrong/ Thinking
that all which is Romanian/Is not good enough!/And here / THEY
ARE WRONG / Because they are forgetting that in us/There is a seed
of heroes / On which we all rely / And when we shall awaken it, we
become / both the strength Thish and pride / WHICH WILL SAVE
ALL OF ROMANIA!”

This time Mr. Doftoreanu expanded the range, ring or
sense of the tango-ists (tango-ers as I said at another
launching of tango-lutze) from pensioners to…children,
even to the newborn. He proved to have remarkable
qualities of a parent and a full-time grandfather!
Congratulations, Nicusor… So help you God!

Mie mi-a plăcut ceea ce a spus domnul scriitor Nicolae

By reading, experiencing and understanding the rhythm
of the dancing poems by Mr. Nicu Doftoreanu, you can
hardly believe that he belongs to the „engineer’s clan”. I say
that because generally speaking, this category is integrated,
particularly by philologists, into the group of concrete and
practical people being no dreamers, nor sensitive or… poets.
Nevertheless, many prove sensitivity and surprising talent!
Among them we have to single out especially Mr.Nicu
Doftoreanu, who, dancing, listening to music and studying
the reality surrounding us, tells us about facts, events,
thoughts and pictures on the move, also giving us topics to
ponder upon, with an educational and active purpose.
The author of this wonderful volume starts with the very
beginning of the one who just came into this world and says
„He is happy, seemingly so / That he came into this world (Tango
of the Newborn, page 15. But as from the title he speaks first
and foremost with the children, he notices how every one of
us went through all these stages, because… „When you are
small / You want to be big / When you are big a lot you suffer…
that you are not small again /… Because so it always was: / You
fight... hard… to succeed” (Dissatisfied Tangou, pag.21).
As time passes, the tango also has a winding road
through life, because time obliges you not to stop, and then,
willy-nilly in order to find the best way, you pray to the
Allmighty: „Oh, LORD / If you love me / I want you to
strengthen the sign / that gives an urge to my thinking / to hide
within me / When I do wrong / Not when I do good”. (Anti-Me
Tangou, pag.29).

47 tangoul acestui
tare / Și mă împinge aprig / Spre colțu-n care țin / Un cal, ce-i
dam jeratic / Pe vremuri,… să-l rețin! / Mă scutur de povară... /
Și-ncerc să-nving în ring! / Pentru a doua oară… / Iar anii să-i
resping / Din Toamnă-n… Primăvară / Luptând pentru cel mic /
Să-mi apăr titlul unic: / DE CEL MAI BUN BUNIC” (Tangou
tangou privește lumea și-o înțelege, are și poticniri,
172
In the dancing rhythm of life you can hardly decide by
yourself which tango is the „BEST”. But on page 47 the
Tango of this valiant grandpa, through his inspired drawings –
even though they are anonymous and taken from the internet - have
arrested my attention. That is why I tried to ask myself: „How
can I let my sadness / Be my comfort / When youth is coming / from
far behind / And pushes me so strong / towards the corner / where I
keep my horse / feeding him live coals / in yonder times… to stay / I
get my burden off / And try to win in the ring / For the second time/
And reject my age / From Autumn to the Spring Fighting for the
Little One /To defend my unique title / AS THE BEST
GRANDPA EVER” (Tango of the Valiant Grandpa, pages 47-
48) Though he experiences moments of joys and extasy, the
poet, who sees the world through tangos and understands it,
also has obstacles, stumbles and memories, when he
meditates dreaming: „Through ages… / Live’s wishes / Left
behind our youth / Render flavor to our mornings / But regrets as
well / With capital „R”… or „At the beginning… ALL are
expecting / And later…ALL are postponing” //Like the foam of
memories / That take unfulfillment through ages.”(Tango in
Deadlock, page 112)
As through his poetical work, Mr. Nicu Doftoreanu proved
to really be an original poet, we can neither ignore the dancing
tango of the centennial which we celebrated in 2018.
Drawing his inspiration, in this case as well, from a great
poet of the Romanians, who had very much wanted a Greater
Romania for all Romanians, Mihai Eminescu, he doesn’t fail to
say the truth with all his courage: „Traitors of the land and…
people!/ You again bring shame on us! / Hiding from our CHILDREN
/ The time of valour! / Overlooking those periods/in which the peoples/
Tried in vain… / This state to dismember!”
173
COPIILOR/ Vremea vitejiilor! ... / Omițând perioadele / În care
noroadele/ Zadarnic au încercat... / Dezmembrare-acestui stat!“
continuând „Și să serbăm CENTENARUL / Înghițindu-ne
amarul,/ Că mai sunt,... chiar printre noi,... / Trădătorii de eroi / Ce
„lucreaz-acoperit”... / Așa cum s-a dovedit!“ (Tangoul
centenarului, pag. 129)
Acum, / Când democrația/a venit și-n
România!“.... „Tot mai mulți români greșesc / Gândind că ce-i
nepieirii!
174
continuing „Let’s celebrate the CENTENNIAL/ Swallowing
Our bitterness/ And we have amongst us/ Traitors
who say they’re heroes/Who work „/under cover”/ As they
already proved!”(Tango of the Centennial page 129)
And, because the author has much more to say about all
and everything, he wants to warn us through a final tango,
by saying: „Scrupulously and with patience / Little man grows
big and handsome/ But from his life he remembers/ Only what
suits him the most” /… Because scrupulousness and patience/
are sisters with desperation / Which in the end brings nostalgia /
That we lose our CHILDHOOD” (Final Tango page 133)
He still wants to explain to us, through the then thoughts
he had and the suffering experienced by Radu Gyr, through
an explanation that might be an interrogation: „Ever more
Romanians wonder: Why don’t we start working?!/ Now, that
democracy has come to Romania as well!... Ever more
Romanians are wrong! / Thinking that all that is Romanian/ is
not good!... /But here they are wrong again Because they forget
that in us/ we have the seed of heroes/ On whom we can rely even
when we… forget what we should be/ Both the strength and the
pride / THAT WILL SAVE ROMANIA!” (Explanatory Tango
pages 135-136)
The engineer poet Nicu Doftoreanu stands out through
the originality of his verses, which reminds us of the old
saying: „The plain is white, the sheep are black he who feeds them
knows them well”. Only by reading his poems can you realize
that an engineer who is also a poet, opens up a window
towards the endless view of the reality surrounding us, as a
result of his Oltenian sharpness, and the warmth of the
Moldavian speech, grafted on the Transylvanian one thus

impossible to find a possible round about way. Knowing,
another perspective of the obstacle encountered and a
solution can be found of to avoid it. Sometimes these
backsteps can take you to the position where you made
your start, but it is still an advantage, because you know this
time the way that does not take you to success and,
consciously, you choose another variant. This is a cyclic
person and he is not necessarily a nonperforming person!
What examples are offered by our life?
In the technical field there are numberless examples in
which the force of the backstep made, when it is requested,
is obvious. Yes, step backwards means force!
In mechanics, the vibration which represents frequent
steps, alternating back and forth, succeeds in doing what
one developed out of synchronizing small and frequent
back and forth steps. Huge bridges, with impressive
mechanical structures, well dimensioned as to static forces,
broke down due to the correlation in time of the march steps
by soldiers.
In electro-technics, the continuous current is not going
through condensers, which is nothing else but an go
through If the electric circuit is being opened, also including
interruption of the circuit, while the alternative current, a
succession of back and forth electric current, goes through
the condenser with no problems, the condenser is no longer
an interruption element but an element of closing the circuit
atmosphere, we come to the electromagnetic waves, which
the almost anything. These waves are also a succession of
back and forth currents! The light is an electromagnetic
wave. Only with steps forward we could not have any light!
The light comes from the backstep!...

(It’s wonderful, in our life on Earth / To keep with much dignity/a rare
and higher dignity / From the Christening sung in a saint lectern /
What grace, the childhood with belief / The heart offered with passing
age/Enjoy its eternity, hope/For the victory of your youth!)
„And they brought children to Him, to put His hands over them,
but the apostles scolded those who brought them. And Jesus,
seeing this, saddened and told them: Let the children come to
Me and do not stop them, because for some like them is the
kingdom of God (the Gospel according to Marcus 10:13-16)
The children are a gift from God and therefore a miracle;
the children are an example of belief, they are sincere,
believe everything, they do not doubt what they are told,
without philosophy, they are chaste, don’t know what a lie
is, they don’t know what is evil, they are honest like the
white doves of the sky. Each child steps into life like his or
her own way of humanity, to enrich it, called upon to join
the unity of humanity. Each of them is called upon to come
with a pious urge to learn from one another and later on
with a generous start to teach other youngsters.
To be a child means to believe in love, in beauty and in
faith. To remain a child is a grace which not all people have.
NICU DOFTOREANU was aware that nothing in life
gives you more satisfaction than the fact of letting the gate
of this paradise, of this fantastic kingdom of childhood
open, to be able to venture along the paths of light paved
with surprises that will cheer you up.

graiului matern, limbii noastre române, limbă ce are
menirea de a oglindi istoria neamului, zestrea noastră
strămoșească.
Respectând strămoșii, poetul se respectă pe sine. A
„Tangou zglobiu”, unde poetul Nicu Doftoreanu îndeamnă
vezi... / Are spor!
184
The poet Nicu Doftoreanu is always in love, he loves not
only children and their world, he loves all people, he loves
nature, his homeland, the folk costumes and the Romanian
language, which is meant to mirror the history of the
people, our sweet Romanian language.
A real appreciation for his respect of our mother tongue, a
language meant to mirror the history of our people, our
ancient heritage, our ancestors.
Respecting our forefathers, the poet shows respect for
himself. To respect a value means to love it, in the real sense
of the word, and the poet is born with this noble feeling. On
each page of this volume we have the great pleasure to read
his thoughts put into verse, in tango rhythm of a MAN with
a beautiful soul, each of his thoughts being named in the
Source of Creation with the title of a tango.
With the poet’s agreement, I will speak about the poem
„Lively tango” in which the poet Nicu Doftoreanu urges
the parents or grandparents to love the little ones, the joy of
their lives, even if these little „sentimental crooks” are
naughty:
„Full of energy they are / They are lovely, but bal /After they learn
how to walk / they run towards your arms again / Asking for help /
And what do you think/He makes headway / A little sentimental
crook / Who gets up in the early morning / Being set as an alarm /
who doesn’t want to fall asleep!”
Nicu Doftoreanu helps us to find in this unchanged
world within us, the unmovable world within us.
