P Activity Most of this app use will be very student centered. The
e teacher should be instructing the class on which app
d they need to download, either by doing this as an in
class activity if they can bring their devices to school, or
a sending home instructions so that parents can help
g them download the app at home.
o Once the students have downloaded the app the
g teacher will ensure they have all shared their books so
y that they can be graded. This will also probably need to
be done at home with parent assistance due to parental
controls on many student devices.
Teacher will also make sure that each student is re-
searching a different life form, this may mean assigning
or having them choose from a list.
Students will either choose or be assigned a specific
plant or animal to write a “book” on.
The student will be required to use the various fea-
tures the app includes such as adding text, audio, pho-
tos, and drawings done in the app as necessary.
They will write a book explaining to their class and
teacher everything about the plant or animal they are
assigned, including species, habitat, food source, habits,
and human impact on said species.
Students can take pictures of the animals or plants on
their device and then upload them to the app, then add
in their own voice to explain the photo and give infor-
mation on the animal.
They can also record short videos with descriptions or
use text to display their knowledge on the subject.
The app also allows the creator to make a custom book
cover for each book.
The teacher will start by instructing the students on
how to download the app Padlet. This may be done as
an in class activity or instructions should be sent home
for parents to help since not all students will be allowed
to download apps.
Once all students have downloaded the app they will be
split into groups, this can be done at random, by the
teacher, or have them choose groups they think they
will work well in.
The groups will be assigned either complex or simple
machines and they will be instructed to go home and
find and take photos, and information about use and
purpose of all the simple/complex machines in their
home or life.
Once a Padlet is created it can be edited by anyone the
link so all the students will be accessing Padlet on their
own devices at home and uploading the data they are
collecting.
They will use the cork board style feature on the
Padlet to compile, arrange, organize, and interpret the
data they have collected separately.
All students can access the Padlet at the same time or
they could create a template, upload separately and
then come together to analyze the data they have col-
lected.
Students can be required to start with a hypothesis
about which machines they think are most common and
then prove or disprove it with the collective data.
Ultimately the students will come up with a compre-
hensive list of machines in several different homes that
has been added to by each student from their own
home. The photos ensure that students are actually uti-
lizing their own home environment for information.
