Wood cement composites are made from wood strands (wood-wool), particles or
fibers, bonded together using na inorganic binder, usually Portland cement.
Wood cement composites composed of wood wool and Portland cement were
first developed in the 1920. Wood-wool cement boards have mainly been used
as sound barries and to provide termal and acoustic insulation in buildings. In
these applications the boards have no structural function and therefore strength
changes due to weathering are of little consequence (Lempfer and Sattler, 1989).
Hence, there are few studies ot weathering of wood –wool cement boards.
Nevertheless, wood-wool cement boards are reported to have greather
resistence to weathering than resin-bonded wood composites (Pinion,1975). The
weathering resistance of two other types of wood-cement composites, cement-
bonded particleboard and cement bonded fiberboards is more importante
because both of these products are used in applications such as cladding and
softis where they are subjected to partial loads (Lempfer and Sattler, 1989).
