The K-12 program in the Philippines aims to better prepare students for tertiary education, employment, and entrepreneurship by providing more time to master concepts and skills. It offers students opportunities to explore various industries through immersions and gain experience in their chosen track. While the transition and long-term preparation present challenges, the essay argues that the advantages of aligning with global education standards and equipping students with in-demand skills outweigh these negatives. The K-12 program promotes competencies needed for the global market and allows students to acquire skills through academic, technical, or arts tracks to find stable jobs or start businesses.

DEPED has in the past years been working towards the implementation of the K-12 program that is designed to “PROVIDE SUFFICIENT TIME FOR MASTERY OF CONCEPT AND SKILLS, DEVELOP LIFELONG LEARNERS, AND PREPARE GRADUATES FOR TERTIARY EDUCATION, MIDDLE-LEVEL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, EMPLOYMENT, and ENTREPRENEURSHIP.” Second, what are the benefits that the Students will gain in this? This system will provide more opportunities to students on a global scale. Students of the new system will be equipped with the skills required for employment. K-12 Program promotes global competency by accelerating mutual recognition of Filipino graduates and professionals in other countries. It will give students opportunities to undergo immersions, have relevant exposure to a variety of industries, and to have experience in their chosen track. Of course, this K-12 has its disadvantages. This K-12 curriculum requires long-term preparation and solid implementation. The transition between old and new curriculum is quite challenging for the school administrator, teachers, parents and especially students. We can say that not all teachers in the Philippines are already fully prepared for the program, which may have an impact on the overall quality received by the students. Also, students need to adjust themselves in spending longer time in school.
So, does this K-12 Program is helpful to us?
In our opinion as a group, the advantages of the program outweigh its negatives. By aligning our education system with the global benchmark/standard, it is giving the students in the Philippines a wider opportunity to be recognized as professionals abroad. Graduates will not be bothered to connect their degree in the countries where they wish to work. This kind of program helps us to prevent the ‘mismatching of jobs’ in the future, that causes the worker to be less productive and affecting the country’s development. It helps us to have enough time to explore, to know our selves, to think what we really want to become. With this ‘mismatch jobs’ can be prevented. Also, according to DEPED, it will be advantage to the student because they are expected to graduate at an age that is a bit older, an age that is ready on exploring to the professional world. They can choose if they want to continue their education into higher forms which will be another great journey to access essential learning developments. K-12 can make the students more prepared to enter the workforce. The senior high school students need not to worry if they want to explore other fields because along the way they will hone their skills in certain areas they are interested in. In addition, K-12 aims to improve the Filipino’s skill in mathematics, science, and linguistics to show their ability and capacity in the global market. There are three tracks that can be the option of senior high school students, which are Academic, Technical- Vocational-Livelihood and the Sport and Arts strands. Each track will give the students enough time to master a field and enhance their skills on what they chosen. By the freedom of the students to choose what they want to learn, and how they will learn, it will help them to learn independency and be a reliable member of a team. Furthermore, graduates of the new system can instantly get a job if they want or make their own business or continue their education in college. All these option will help the student improve their competences, skills and professionalism. The main benefits of K-12 system are the basic skills such as reading and writing. Adults who do not master these skills, according to research, usually undergo a process of learning how to read and write before having a good job, making it more difficult for them. Also, mastering math skills is another benefit of the system, that will helps us to budget, figuring the best paying jobs or how to file taxes properly. Getting K-12 education can open new opportunities and increase the chances of finding stable jobs. Students can acquire more developed skills and having a job that they really love. And the perks of having K-12 Diploma will make students more likely to be hired because employers assumed that K-12 graduate has the basic skills that are necessary for the job, have adequate communication skills, and can get along to the rest of the teams because they learn how to socialize and follow the rules/objectives like they are supposed to do. I believe that the future of a student is in their determination. K-12 education will only help us to make it easier to achieve our goals in life. K-12 is useless if the student doesn’t have any desire to make his life extraordinary. In conclusion, K-12 is a boon.
